Nintendo Switch 2 |OT| Switch 2 Nintendo, because now we're playing with power

finally got my hands on the Pro Controller.
Media Markt delivered a day late, oh well...

the D-Pad is definitely an improvement over the Switch 1 Pro controller.
HOWEVER accidental diagonals are still very much possible, just in a different way.

on the Switch 1 Pro Controller the accidental diagonals happened because the D-Pad contacts were easily triggered by pressing a bit too high or too low on the 4 directions.
On the Switch 2 Pro Controller that is not an issue anymore, however a different issue is happening.

on the Switch 2 Pro Controller, while holding down one of the 4 main directions, if you move your thumb up or down a bit, it has some wiggle room, and that wiggle room will allow you to tilt the D-Pad towards the neighboring directions, which can lead to you hitting directions you didn't want to.

I tested it on PuyoPuyo Tetris, and had 1 accidental drop so far when it got heated.
also tested SF2 and SF6.
in Street Fighter and other fighting games it won't be as much of an issue, and doing circle motions actually feels really good on it, as the underlying rubber pad feels very snappy, so you can feel directions reasonably well.

so, all in all, the D-Pad is a clear improvement over the Switch 1 (it's hard not to be tbh), but not perfect and not on the level of more expensive controllers like the Razer Wolverine V3 for fighting games, and not on the level of 8bitdo's new tactile D-Pads for Tetris and 2D games.
I think it's possible to get used to the wiggle and accidental inputs on this one, while it wasn't really possible to adjust to the weird accidental diagonals of the Switch 1 Pro Controller.

Thanks for the review man !
So, yay or nay ? those are 90€ a pop ffs, maybe the 8bit do ultimate 2 is the better option ?
I've ordered the black one of these, arrives today. I've got the same model for my steam deck and am very satisfied with it. Will report back if it's terrible, but I'd assume it's great like the steam deck version.

Nice ! Please post some impressions brother when you receive it 'cause I'm in immediate need of a case and this looks both stylish and protective, plus, its price is very competitive since most CHY-NA stuff on Amazon is pretty much the same price.

PS : tag me so I can read your post later, cheers

8bitdo has firmware updates out now for their controllers to work with Switch 2. Unfortunately their auto updating app you can access from their site is garbage and while their site says a update is there, when you connect the controller via usb to your pc and run their app, it never sees the new update.

Has anyone had this issue when trying to update your 8bitdo controller?

I have the Pro 2 bluetooth one, and it says update 3.06 is available, i connect my controller and launch their app and it says i have 3.05. I click the update firmware button so it will look and see the 3.06 but it never does......just spins and eventually finds nothing.

Does the stupid controller need to be in a certain mode first to see the update before connecting it and running the app? Nothing says to do that....

EDIT- 8bitdo gave me a link to download the firmware offline and update it manually and that worked fine, so if you have this issue reach out to them and they'll respond really quick! They said they roll out the new firmware to the upgrade tool in batches so it may not have been up yet when i tried.

The Switch 2 is exactly what I wanted it to be: a more powerful Switch with a larger screen.

I suppose I get the hate, in some ways, because this is the first iterative console Nintendo has made in a LONG time. They've typically had gimmicks to go along with their new hardware (wii remotes, tablet controller, analog sticks, etc.), even the DS to 3DS was basically just a hardware iteration - but now with a 3D screen! Even the NES to SNES console upgrade had the inclusion of shoulder and additional buttons on the controller to make it feel like a whole new experience. Meanwhile, this just... feels like a Switch, but upgraded.

I think the closest comparison I could make with other console manufacturers is the jump from PS1 to PS2. The PS2 was obviously much more powerful, but it had the same controller as the first one and also played the PS1 game discs. It had its own kinds of gimmicks (widescreen support, DVD playback) but in general it was just an upgraded PS1. In that regard, the Switch 2 feels like it was appropriately named.
Hmm that ps1 - ps2 comparison is crazy tbh. You are so far getting 60fps versions of switch 1 games which are in the ps3-xone zone visually. From ps1 you went from linear 3d polygon games like crash and Spyro to full on 3d worlds like Jak, GTA, and the jump from FF VII to FF X is huge in every single way. You cannot really say the same for switch 2 yet. It's giving (ps4-ps5) jump if anything minus the dual sense + improved cloud streaming.

As far as the disappointment.

I am a switch 1 and OLED owner. I really was pushed to Nintendo again when they launched switch because of Zelda which was a ground breaking launch game, Mario kart 8 which was the best Mario kart ever at the time. And Mario odyssey coming out in the fall. Along with remasters of Wii U games that didn't really get played by many. It was a no brainer for me. This go around….. it is not the same. This is huge for Nintendo only gamers tho, as now you get access to cyberpunk, Elden ring, and more ps4 games that were GOTY contenders. So they def have a different experience.

So I played Cyberpunk 2077 on the Switch 2 (portable) and the Steam Deck OLED and the picture quality seemed comparable? XeSS Ultra Quality on the Deck, 30fps cap, mixture of low and some medium settings. Steam Deck appeared to have more stutters, but the Switch 2 dropped fps a bit more. Checking online all the comparisons I see are still sticking to FSR for some reason.

Good showing from the Switch 2 considering the power draw difference.
Fair assessment.

Yo, what the fuckkkkk, just opened my box from Amazon and :

H3xvUMx.jpeg
Had the same happen to me. When i looked inside the box, I could see the voucher code for MK9 was opened. Tried it and I could still redeem it in the eShop. But the box was definitely opened before and someone scratched the silver stuff from the voucher card in order to see the code. Weird.

Been playing few games I have last night - and I hoped it will do more with BC.
I was especially let down by the Xenoblade 1, which still had very low resolution @ 30fps - or Age of Calamity, while runs locked fps now, but I would have loved if they bumped it to 60fps @ higher resolution.

It feels nicer and more substantial, and am glad that I can use my old Pro controller for it too - but it definitely feel like very conservative effort for to be called a next gen. Sorta like DS to 3DS upgrade.
Perhaps next Nintendo console/handheld will have something more interesting as per the H/W is concerned.

I am hoping more games will use mouse function! I'd buy more ergonomic mouse type joycon, if anybody would make one. :)

I could probably replace my Switch with Switch 2 and my wife wouldn't have ever even noticed unless I used it in handheld.
My wife just thinks its the steam deck.
I hate hiding stuff from her, but seem to have an addiction to getting electronics day 1.

Initial thoughts....

-The screen is fine. It is nothing special. Nothing bad either. Just fine. Just like Switch 1 non-OLED really
-Zero thought put into ergonomics (outside of children, perhaps). Just like Switch 1 non-OLED. Hopefully my $25 grip will solve that
-Performance in Zelda is excellent. Looks great on my OLED and in handheld. Big improvement. Looking forward to trying SMO tonight
-Dock is fine. Would be nice if it had some weight in the base. It is a bit top heavy and the cords alone will knock it over.
-Love that my 8bitdo Ultimate works (after update, thanks again Mister Wolf Mister Wolf )

Overall, I'm happy with it. It isn't mindblowing. Switch Pro would have been a fine name, but it just as much of a generational leap as anything else out there*. The big add beyond the silicon is DLSS. I don't care about Cyberpunk or FF7, but I'm hoping most Nintendo games should be able to achieve a standard 60fps with this. The fact Zelda doesn't look and play like shit on my TV was the first big test for me and it passed with fly colors.

Looking forward to Donkey Kong Bonanza

* to clarify, I'm saying the name doesn't mean much when generational leaps are not what they used to be

I saw this earlier. Very cool.

As he says in the video, I just hope CDPR add the ability to quick swap between control styles by lifting up the joy-con. If they add that in a future patch and fix some of the bugs, I'll be grabbing it ASAP.

Thanks for the review man !

I think the 8bitdo is the better value for sure.
the only reason to get the Pro Controller is to have a functioning headphone jack.

ergonomics, D-Pad, Sticks... all of them are worse than the 8bitdo Ultimate 2.
the only question is if the additional input lag that some reported on Switch 1 when using 8bitdo controllers is fixed on Switch 2...

Do we know if Metroid will get kb&m support?

I did notice some lag with mine playing Zelda. Did not know this was a common problem

It's a Known widespread issue. No one opened your Switch 2 (most likely). Several shipments had faulty security tape that deteriorated during their shipment/storage process.

You can and should check just to make sure but there's been no reported incidents of missing or tampered items with these affected boxes

So are the Switch 2 Edition games playable on the regular Switch? As it says it's the Switch game plus downloadable update.

Is there anything you can do to not have the cartridge inserted always be the left most game on the home menu?

Topher Topher what grip did you get

Trying this noname brand grip.

Wanted something that didn't block the kickstand. I'll post pictures and thoughts on it later tonight

If I don't like that then I'll probably spring for the dbrand killswitch thingy. $60 though

To me, it feels like being a hater is being a sheep because it's so prevalent lol

i think those people think buying a Switch 2 at launch is endorsing the $80+ game price tag and more in the industry. Which does suck, but sorry, a thousand people 'boycotting' and refusing to buy it isn't going to change anything.

Except for that time ResetEra boycotted Hogwart's Legacy.....

I'm committed to a Switch 2, arriving tomorrow. $50 Mario Kart is a great deal. Will likely pre-order Donkey Kong tomorrow, $70 for Nintendo EPD I can live with. I may get Welcome Tour just because I like quirky Nintendo BS like the old e-shop music, Labo and Game Garage and it supposedly has some minigames.

But I don't see myself ever getting a game from them for $80, ever. We'll see.

Switch Pro would have been a fine name,
When system has own exclusives game dont come out on previous system, you can no longer call that "pro".

PS5 pro is different still PS5 and will never have its exclusive, it just Pro version of PS5.

It's just a name. 3DS had a "new" version that had its own games that couldn't be played on old 3DS. But you cut of the part where I said Switch 2 was just as much a generational leap as anything else. That was more my point than the name.

From I can remember new 3Ds only had one exclusive game that was Xenoblade 3DS.

Seems like the system transfer transfers everything automatically. Any down side to this? Can you still play the games on your OG switch?

So I fired up The Legend of Zelda: Links Awakening and VERY HAPPY to report that the stutter/performance issues and weird graphical anomalies
that plagued the Switch 1 version have been FIXED on the Nintendo Switch 2!

Runs silky smooth 60fps, 4k, no stutter/performance issues and a just a really crisp, colorful image quality.

Good video to show the difference:

The PS4 to PS5 jump is another apt comparison, for sure.

The reason I went with PS1 to PS2 as the main comparison in my post though was that I was there at launch, and it felt very similar. Although there was a MUCH wider selection of PS2 games at launch than the Switch 2 has exclusives, games like the ones you mentioned weren't released until well after the console launched (in some case, years). Most people I knew at the time picked up one, maybe two PS2 games, but kept mostly playing PS1 games on the system until the software library filled out a lot more. Day one with the PS2 felt a lot like day one with the Switch 2, for me personally, in that it felt extremely familiar but obviously more powerful. I spent most of the day yesterday playing Switch 1 games, just like I spent most of my first few months with the PS2 playing PS1 games.

Which is a bit weird cause you acknowledge the generational leap but consider it to be a Switch pro. They're mutually exclusive.

A Pro model is basically the same console but with a bit more power, like the ram pack on the N64, the 32X on the Mega Drive, DSi, New 3DS, and what potentially would allow the Tegra X1+ in the 2019/Lite/OLED model if they allowed higher clockspeeds instead of same clockspeed for better battery, despite supporting HDMI 2.1 for the OLED model for eg.

You can argue the PS5 Pro goes a bit beyond that but it still shares the same CPU at the end so you still have the same bottleneck than the original PS5, so at the end no generational leap either, just the same games running slightly better.

So yeah I believe you definitly saw the potential of this console, which goes from PS3+ to PS4 Pro level in one generation, but it's a bit confusing you call it a pro, but I suppose it is solely on your definition on what a pro is (which I assume being the same console but more powerful - which can be argue is kind of the case here if we look at very basic elements like the shape and UI sceenshots).

So yeah lots of words to say I understand your point but also why people might not right away

Seems like no one bought Suikoden 1 & 2 on Switch 2, because I can't find a single video online, or a thread of saying if there's even any difference from the Switch 1 version

I sure hope AOT2 Final Battle gets this treatment.

Also could I trouble some of you to show some images of a Switch 2 with a tempered glass screen protector on it? I wanna buy some but not sure if I should snag these or not.

This is an amFilm ultra clear one, I think the only difference compared to the one you linked is that one comes with 3, this one only has 2 but they are the auto-alignment ones. It's basically a bracket that fits just over the screen and rests on the edges of the console until you press down to apply it. Mine has a very tiny imperfection on the bottom right corner bezel. It went on basically perfect the first application, and I have another spare if I ever need it.

The 3 pack you linked was on sale for like $5 so I actually grabbed one of those as well in case I somehow messed up the auto-aligner (my first time using one). I've used those in the past for multiple Switches, PSVita, and a Portal I recently acquired. The only difference is no aligner, so you need to be more careful when placing it to keep it straight and avoid getting any fingerprints/dust stuck to it. They all work well and produce fantastic results without impacting the touchscreen functionality at all. The ultra clear ones are extremely clear, and while I don't have expertise with color grading I have not noticed any difference in picture quality after applying one. Glare doesn't seem any worse than the screen without it.

Definitely getting a case for this thing. Slippery and not easy to hold.

I think it feels surprisingly good, though still not big enough to be comfortable. I went with dbrand Killswitch 2 to add some bulk to hold on to.

So you cannot wake a Switch 2 with the Switch 1 Pro Controller. You have to walk up to the Switch 2 in the dock, push the power button on top to wake it, and then turn the Pro Controller on to use it. This is a douche move by Nintendo, trying to make me buy a Switch 2 Pro Controller just so I can wake the console????

Very annoying. I've been using the Gamecube controller to wake it so far, does the trick. I don't have a Pro Controller 2 yet.

Pleasantly surprised.

All the power talk is irrelevant. It's powerful enough for Nintendo to produce excellent games. No one sensible plays third party on the Switch, so it doesn't matter.

Really what I was trying to say was that names mean very little these days when generational leaps are not what they used to be. Made sense in my head anyway. lol

edited my post to clarify

Would you guys rather a free update for the Xenoblade games or Monolith Soft doing something extra with them to merit it being a purchase?
