PlayStation 5 Leak Reveals New ‘Low Power’ Mode, Fueling Handheld Console Reports

I think it is a little premature to get excited about handhelds from MS and Sony this year. If a Sony handheld does see the light of day, it will most likely launch in the time frame of the Playstation 6 as a Portal 2.0 that can remote play to your PS6 at best, native PS5 library support would be a nice bonus.

How about a Switch-style PS5 that becomes the de facto PS5 model when docked and a ~half power PS5 when undocked? It'll probably need to be ~2027 on N2P (the chip'd be tiny though) and have a much better battery than switch to even be viable, but it could replace the standard PS5 as PS6 comes in. It'd act as a full on legacy console for PS5, PS4, PS2, PS1, PSP & PSVita; with streaming for all of the above + PS3, and Portal functionality for PS6. Cross-gen PS5/6 games would work too of course and select PS6 titles which are more rudimentary may be able to make a jump. Sony could also try and poach some third party Switch stuff.

The challenge of course is getting the existing PS5 library working in portable mode. Sony should have put contingencies in place and at a minimum have flags/hooks in all games on the SDK from the beginning of the gen so they could go in and dial resolution or specific common visual settings back and maybe even inject scaling.

Sony could get this mode built in now to make it function going forward, first and second party stuff can get patched and big third party stuff can get patched, but there'll likely be a good ~2000 titles in total left over that need to be addressed. Unless they've come up with some smart, novel approach to hook into games and adjust them without direct intervention.

Stop insulting people every time you respond to them.
You motherfuckers were crying like little bitches about how the Series S was "holding back gaming" and now you masturbate over a low-spec Playstation SKU, which developers will have to target.

Thinking like this kind of betrays a lack of critical thinking that ignored the real issues with the Series S in the first place.

The Series S was supposed to be a step down unit from the Series X and designed in a way that it would play the exact same games at lower resolution and framerate.

Notice that this is actually the case with the PS5 and PS5 Pro. Not only is the PS5 a lower spec PS5 Pro, but it doesn't have PSSR. The lack of PSSR on the PS5 doesn't hold back the PS5 Pro.

The issues with the Series stem from not only the mandate and mandate for parity of features, but also the actual architecture and design of the Series S. Ignoring these and assuming that any lower tech holds back higher tech ignores the reality of gaming as we know it. The PS5 isn't holding back a 5090 for example.

If Sony can design a low spec handheld that can play PS5 games at 1080p60 without a lot of effort from developers, they'll have achieved something significant. I do think that will need some combination of PSSR upscaling from lower resolutions though if it's going to be anywhere close to affordable.

TFlops are TFlops and RDNA4 definitely has better perf/CU.

not on the level you'd expect if you do the calculation with double FP32.

in reality games can't really take advantage of it at all, so it's a meaningless stat. so either just calculate it without dual issue, or just always have a little asterisk there to make it clear that you can't expect dual issue FP32 to actually work in games.

It's not going to happen but I actually want Xbox or Playstation to do their take on a high-powered Switch-style console.

I don't think anyone is expecting it this year, and nothing suggests that it's a Portal 2.0, lol.

Series S hobbled the gen without bringing any benefit other than price.

This will add portability and likely won't demand parity, which is a massive benefit with zero downside for any dev that doesn't want to participate.

Sony: Here we have our new amazing low power console

People: OMG PSP2!!!

Sony: Take a look at PlayStation 5 S, smaller and cheaper, with a Max output of 1440p for those players that don't have 4K... Applaud!

I guess it depends on when the console gets out and if Sony decides another PS4 like surprise (LPDDR6 specs were finalised and released last year), but it is undeniable that Sony's move now seem to prepare for it not to be the case.

Yeah, but it feels a bit small… I bet the PSSR ban will not apply to PSSR2 or whatever solution this handheld will use in portable mode. Easiest way to lower bandwidth and power consumption is to render at a dramatically lower resolution (sorry, doing sparse rendering :)) and upscale with PSSR-next-gen.

The PSSR ban of LowPower mode IMHO is another way to offer a closer to handheld mode performance profile (forcing devs to lower rendering resolution without relying on the power hungrier PSSR, compared to PSSR next gen). What do you think? I shudder to think about a handheld that does not use something like an advanced PSSR version and targets PS5 like visuals.
I just have a thought about PSSR (or FSR4). This handheld could still have ML hardware and ML upscaling or some version of it but that feature has no reason, yet, to be put into that low power mode for current PS5 games as that low power mode is the easy mode to port PS5 games to that thing.

It could be a feature with its own API (still in dev) that would needed to be specifically patched for each game at the will of the developers. I mean, even DLSS isn't used on Switch 1 games without some important patch. Nintendo don't even use it in their Switch 2 games.

Its not a new sku so chill

Just a mode you select on the console for possibly a new handheld. Stop trying to SOny too this

Presumably the CPU/SoC should be fairly similar to Medusa Point. Rip out the NPU (Upper left?), bunch of PCIe lanes, display PHYs (you need like 1-2) etc. Make the GPU block bigger and newer IP (8CU -> 16-20CU?). Maybe 8xZen6c instead of 4x6/4x6c as you wouldn't have higher clocks anyway. I guess the upper right is the 2xZen-LP and some cache?

Portal 2.0 is the most sensible and safe thing that I can see Sony releasing anytime soon.
The handheld shares the same architecture with the PS6, and by the sounds of it, it will be a monumental gap from the Portal that it will make zero sense to market it as a Portal 2.

Sounds like the opposite of boost mode. Why would you use a low power mode for just a handheld? Hell they could use 32gig ram with zen5c and upto date rdna igpu I'm sure they could power between ps5/pro with pssr 2.0. My guess is that it's going to be used for games that doesn't require much power

If the portable console is aimed to be more than a streaming device then the name 'Portal' will not make sense, I would agree.

The next PlayStation handheld will do a lot of things including streaming.

Native + Remote + Streaming

I've gone back and forth, but I think I've landed on if Sony is smart, they'll strike while the iron is hot and release a PS handheld by the end of next year rather than wait on some unified PS6 strategy.

The PS6 is going to play PS5 games for years and years. You don't even need the PS5 handheld to play PS6 exclusive titles (though I think these will be few and far between).

The ability to play PS4 and PS5 titles, with cross-gen PS5/PS6 titles is all you need for the foreseeable future. By the time PS6 games are coming out exclusively, it'll still be able to run these games via remote and streaming and by then the streaming tech should be significantly better.

Drop this thing for like 500 USD and call it a day. Rather than launch entry level PS6 SOC, you simply focus on the PS5 Super Slim for that entry level price and wait as long as possible to launch the PS6.

Great analysis. Yes their strategy is sound and that device is going to be very successful. And they still need to sell PS6s aven at launch for people wanting the best from the cross-gen PS5 / PS6 games.

This also means PS6 wil be very expensive. Probably at PS5 Pro price level...

Expanding on this; Sony would be really smart to release a PS5 Super Slim (digital only) for 300 eh maybe 325-350 dollars for the 2026 Holiday Season, capitalizing on GTA6, Halo PS5?, Intergalactic? Wolverine? All of this in tandem with a PS5 handheld for say 500 dollars.

But on the fucking go. And the best part is that devs will complain but will be forced to release games on it because they can't just ignore PlayStation.

They already ignored PlayStation in 2011 with Vita. Even Nintendo handhelds don't receive big third party support (for sure not for AAA games).

Porting games from PS5 is one thing, but this console is part of PS6 launch. How strong it will be, around 0.5 of PS5 power? Imagine creating games for PS6 with this fucking anchor, device more than one generation slower... This is Series S situation but even worse.

If devs will have to create dedicated software for it we will be back to PS Vita...

This is so sad but also so true. It took almost 5 years for low-end gaming cards to catch up with PS5 performance. Unless something big happens, PS6 will be some kind of PS5 Pro+.
I think if the goal is to run PS5 games, it should definitely come out before PS6.

Let's come back in 2 years when home and handheld console sales of the PS6 family are 50/50, how would you be able to ignore it in that case?
Also, this will not be an issue for 99% of games out there.

Mibu no ookami Mibu no ookami I think you're setting yourself up for disappointment if you think both the handheld and the main PS6 will not come out at the same time in 2027. K KeplerL2 and heck, even MLID back in January of last year, said as much.

We will see. Handhelds are on the rise vs. when Vita launched (even 3ds wasn't selling so hot) but at the same time Nintendo is ULTRA strong in this market (+ there are pc handhelds).

To be honest Sony strategy is super weird to me, they should just focus on single PS6 home console and DELIVER games for it.

Let me let you in on a secret. Kepler and MLID have no idea when Sony will launch the PS6.
As in the exact release date? Maybe not, but they know the roadmap for the chip production and historical data as well. Unless you think Sony going for 3 years old PS6 hardware in 2029 is a great idea.

There is no world in which Sony sells a $150-200 cheaper portable alternative at launch and it doesn't make up for half (or even more!) of overall sales.

Handhelds are on the rise? What does that mean?

These PC handhelds have all sold significantly worse than the Vita.

Sony's strategy is about maximizing TAM. Releasing a handheld does that significantly more than whatever "focus" you think they need on PS6.

Well, the jump from PS4 to PS5 at least gave us ray tracing and SSD, on top of still being a sizable jump over base hardware.

There is no way in hell PS6 will be even 5 times faster than base PS5 while keeping a reasonable price
The AI stuff could be improved but it's already in PS5 Pro and in any case does not make a huge difference since it's just upscaling.

Technologically I can't see anything that would make PS6 games impossible to run on PS5 scaling back resolution and details. This isn't a Sony problem, it's a general tech issue

Everything is a function of price vs performance. The Switch architecture was finalized back in 2021 according to MLID. Sony has no real incentive to release the PS6 in 2027.

None.

Their margins will be better on PS5. There's likely going to be no console competition for them and the PS5 Pro just launched in 2024.

So in recognizing that, maybe you should think about what Sony should be doing with the PS6 as it relates to tech.

Yes, there is, but you seem to be stubborn in not recognizing that late 2027 will be 4 FY years after the peak period of 2023/2024. Exactly as it was going from PS2 to PS3, exactly as it was going from PS4 to PS5, and fuck it, exactly as it was going from Wii to Wii U, and exactly as it was going from Switch 1 to Switch 2. PS1 and PS3, though? They were replaced even earlier after their peak!
Sony not having competition is not only untrue, but they will be inherently competing in the handheld space with the portable console, which has been constantly reported as coming out as part of the PS6 family, sharing the same release roadmap as the home unit, etc.
Please tell me when exactly do you expect both systems to come out.

You're stuck in this mindset like it's a hard fast rule.

Every generation has different parameters and conditions that have to be examined individually.

  • Diminishing returns on silicon
  • Increased costs for advanced chipsets
  • Pandemic recovery
  • Global economy
  • The seeming discontinuation of Xbox as a platform in Year 5
  • GTA6
  • EA FC, Madden, and CoD all eventually going current-gen only
If Sony was sticking to the roadmap you think they are, the PS5 Pro would have come out in 2023 instead of 2024.

If you actually looked at the trends, each PS generation has lasted longer than the one before it, with PS3 to PS4, and PS4 to PS5 both being 7.

The PS6 won't come out until 2028 at the earliest. The PS Handheld will either come out next year or in 2027.

On the rise vs back then. Compare sales of switch 1 to 3ds. Nintendo revived this market that was considered "dead" at some point (outside of Japan).

You can not compare the Switch 1 and the 3DS, while simultaneously ignoring the Wii...

Crazy to attribute a hybrid console's total sales as a revival of handhelds, when it isn't just a handheld.
