Audiophile GAF

I'm seriously thinking about Meze 99 Classic.

Build quality seems good.

They are serviceable to the last screw.

You can buy replacment drivers, earpads, headband.

Those look really nice, but closed back headphones have a shitty soundstage usually.
But i've read they have a silky smooth sounds signature which makes me really curious about them.

I'm looking into that but for now an X5 soundblaster amp. Still a major difference in sound from 660S
I would look into a DAC/AMP combo for driving your headphones, doesn't need to be anything fancy 200-400 dollars should be enough. Schiit Audio is good.

Actually upgrading your headphone gives you the biggest difference in sound. DAC's usually differ very slightly from each other just like amps and cables (if any) but headphones (and speakers), oh man audio nirvana.

I really do love how the Etymotic ER4XR with a 4db low shelf & tweaks to mids/treble, Uses a Single BA config yet blows away every past headphone I've used. The Fiio K12 Is fantastic for the price.

As for lossy codecs I'm blown away how 128kbps Opus It basically Transparent beyond 3 songs that need 384kbps.

I suggest filling the base up to a third.

Any more than that and class A will sound like class D amplification. I guess it is also room dependent. One can certainly experiment.

I am debating on getting a CD player for my set-up now thanks to ForAcademicPurposes ForAcademicPurposes video and the fact that I have a few CDs laying around.

Any recommendations that aren't stupidly expensive?

FiiO and Moondrop also have their own players. I'll get some hang time with the FiiO next week actually. I can't remember which player.
I'm not in a rush so let me know your thoughts. I don't necessarily want something portable. I am also thinking about doing an external phono stage for my record player.

Are a used pair (good clean condition) of the HD800S worth it for around $650cad? I never spent this much on a pair of headphones, but everyone has been glazing these ones for so long that i am curious, and feel like trying them.

This hss been my most requested feature since the cretacious period.
The new model also guarantees gapless playback from both CDs and USB storage devices inserted into its front panel USB-A socket for which file selection and playback comes via Shanling's rather basic Eddict app.

I wanted to before getting the hd560s, but most suggested the hd560s over it, so i went with that. And while i am happy with them, i wouldn't be against a big upgrade.
Dunno who suggested that but the Sundara clears the 560s with ease.

Sometimes i even prefer em over the HD 600..not tonally but in pretty much every other aspect.

For gaming?

Most i've seen on youtube and reddit suggest the hd560s over them, so after i decided to get rid of my AKG712Pro's, got the hd560s.

Ah. I am not big enough of a fan of listening to music to burn hundreds of dollars for a pair of cans, so my focus on quality is only related gaming.

Yeh i dont spend much on my gaming headphone either, just 147€ for the beyerdynamic tygr 300 r,which was a great buy.
I use it mainly for horror movies, multiplayer games and horror games. Its great for that.

I just bought the Bowers & Wilkins px7 s2e headset for €200. I was able to find it on Amazon under used, like new.
I didn't take it lightly. Other options were the Sony wh-1000xm5 and the Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless. After reading many reviews, I had the best impression of the Bowers.
I'm very excited. It should arrive on Saturday.

Fingers crossed that I made the right choice for me.

What are your favorite ANC headphones?

I haven't messed with too many ANC headphones but the AirPod Max and AirPod Pros have been solid for me. I sold my Max for the newer Pros and haven't regretted it.

I really wanted to try the Pandas but reviews made the ANC sound less desirable.

Just had this delivered today - a Marantz Stereo 70s amp and a Velodyne 10" sub. Not sure it counts as audiophile, but it's probably as close as I'll ever get.

I bought it to replace a broken Denon mini system that I was using for TV audio. It's basically a home cinema receiver except it only does stereo. They do a 7.1 version for the same price but there's zero chance of me running miles of speaker cable around my house. The stereo version has a different and more powerful amplifier than the cinema one, to make up for the loss of all those speaker terminals.

Wired it up - I had to saw a piece out of the back of my TV cabinet to make it fit - and it does sound very nice streaming from Apple Music. Haven't connected it to a CD player, but I have a decent Sony SACD machine upstairs, gathering dust, so I may try that eventually. I tried the 4k blu-ray of Talking Heads' Stop Making Sense, but that was underwhelming. Kind of muffled.

I'm guessing games consoles should bypass this thing altogether and connect directly to the TV?

I think I may need bigger speakers than my beloved 1990s Minipods, to match the sub, which is a damn shame. This is my first excursion into separate subwoofers, so I am pretty baffled by things like phase and crossover. How do I tell when it's right? Do I put it at max volume and let the receiver handle the bass?

Seems like a nice bit of kit anyway, and I managed to get it installed before the wife came home and started asking questions.
