I doubt it.

Not saying it's impossible for extreme people (left or right) cant change, but I get a sense in life that when it comes to hard attitudes and personality it's a hard thing to change. Work, pro athletes, home life etc.... it's easy to teach new technical skills and get them to do functional tasks better. But hard to change their mentality.

Think of it like a spectrum of extreme people on the edges and most people somewhere in the middle. When there's a hot topic or something changes, people in the middle can sway one way or the other. Maybe sometimes they sway a bit one way, but in a different situation they'll change and sway the other. They flexible enough to change their view. And people dont care which way they go since they are known to tolerate both sides. Hard nosed edge thinkers will likely always think their way no matter what happens.

Adding to it, most people have enough awareness to also consider their own image and suddenly being two faced and maybe that chance they want to switch hard looks bad on them. And their supportive peers now might think they are a traitor or whatever. So the person has pigeon holed themselves into a corner so much, they got to kind of ride it out. If they dont, they face a double hit of supporters who now might not like them, and former opposition who can chime in and laugh and say "told ya so my side was better".

So in a nut shell, once you go ape shit for one side someone is kind to pressured to keep it going. No different than console wars. If someone is extremely loyal to one side, it looks funny if he suddenly switches and other people might call him out and laugh.... "Oh look, even console lover XXX is badmouthing his own console now. Haha"

I can say you are right, nobody is a saint. However, I can attest that he was almost always a complete gentleman with the people he interacted with, even when they sometimes were less than courteous.
