preordered the ally x. Dont really need it, but just want to try it out for a bit and its a stop gap for me until SD2 hits 2026/2027

Have to say the branding of this is fucking awful

1. ROG - apparently stands for "Republic of Gamers", weird enough in itself, but you'd have to look that up. Most people will assume ROG is short for Roger.

2. Xbox - well that brand is hardly popular these days

3 - Ally - Ally to me? Ally to ASUS? Ally to Roger? Who the fuck knows at this point.
Yeah I can't stand the name of this. Proper mouthful.

Prices of these make Switch 2 look like a bargain. Of course Switch 2 doesn't have access to PC library out of the box.

I think if Switch 2 gets decent support I would lean towards that over some of these other PC handhelds.

$1000? Naw, I'm good.

The original Legion Go S can be had for around $500 and is much much much better bang for buck. Install Bazzite on it and you're good to go.

You will get 80-90% of the performance of the Xbox Ally X.

No. But only because I bought a Lenovo Legion Go Z1 Extreme just a couple months ago. If I hadn't this would be a day one purchase. Xbox ROG Ally X eventually having access to AI upscaling without a performance hit on the GPU makes it far superior to any of the other handhelds on the market.

Here you can see me preordering mine

I expect knives will be out for this niche product because it's Xbox but, again, if you've got a bunch of games that will already run on it, I don't see why it is particularly deserving of it.
No it's not, it's a ASUS handheld. No one cares for it like they didn't care for the previous one.
Only difference with this one is a button that says Xbox, APU that's a bit better and a timed exclusive OS for $200 more than last years model.

I'd be interested in one for cheaper. I'm expecting the PC Box to be expensive, but I just don't use portables enough these days to justify that price. Maybe the cheaper model when on sale someday, but probably not. I'd use it as an oddity here and there around the house, or extremely rarely on trips and that's it.

It is cool though. If I had infinite money, sure.

I will not write it off completely because real world reviews might make me change my mind but it is unlikely.

Actually just went back and watched some hands on videos of it and it is growing on me. The OS is clearly superior to a straight Windows 11 handheld. Also the grip looks better than most handhelds. I doubt I would buy the X but perhaps the base model.

Kinda want an 8" display though.

Needs a decent screen too. Any one who's interested in a ~$1k PC handheld isn't going to want a display that makes things a blurred mess with a ~30fps pixel response time.

I got the Switch 2, but I don't see it as a handheld until they make a revision with a better screen.

It will be sadly the first Xbox hardware I will not buy, bought all of those so far.

But those big-ass portable consoles are stuck in the middle imo, not portable enough for handheld use and not that good as desktop replacement.
My thoughts exactly. Hence why Steam Deck is the best way to go IMO. And in the same- will be the first Xbox I don't buy cause basically this isn't an Xbox and no amount of calling it an Xbox will change my mind. An Xbox is a console and I have owned all of them. This is a handheld ROG Ally PC. And I already own a PC.

No. No interest in handheld PC's, I'd rather buy a desktop or laptop at that price if I wanted a PC.

That Windows is coming (already unofficially on) some of the other handhelds. I will probably just jump on a Z1E device for a good price unless I find a compelling reason not to. If I am going to go 1K or over, I will probably go with the Legion Go 2 for the nicer screen,

Preordered the Ally X but might cancel it and get a Sonos Arc Ultra instead…Going to have to sleep on it

I'm interested, but it's still too expensive. I'm more interested in a future Xbox console or a dedicated handheld console that is fully compatible with the Xbox, Xbox 360, One, and Series libraries.

It's probably one thing on my part, but every time I see people like this with direct contacts and friendships with the heads of video game companies, my first instinct is that I'm seeing someone who takes us for fools...

I don't doubt that Shuhei and many others have no need to pre-order anything because they will surely receive (or have already received) one for free.

That said, seeing Shuehi make this tweet is still shocking and will surely have caused resentment among some blue fans.

PS.About the thread. I'm interested, but the high price requires some knowledge before being sure. I'll wait for reviews, performance comparisons, and how games run on it... Maybe Black Friday or Christmas will be the time to decide.

Nope because i dont like handhelds, and if i was going to pay that much i'd just get a console.

Besides i still dont know what this even is. I mean does it play PC games, Steam and other launchers?. Does it play Xbox games only?, both?.

I just dont get what it is.

Yeah, despite me waffling so much on it having the same screen size as my original Ally X (that I have upgraded to 4 TB even), I'm gonna snag the Xbox Ally X. I like handheld gaming a LOT and I can't resist new tech. The price is fine with me. Will be a holdover until Steam Deck 2 hits in '27+.

If I didn't have a Steam Deck I would consider it, otherwise there is little to gain. I'm disappointed they decided to rebadge an existing handheld, rather then create a new Snapdragon based device and have their Gamepass be the main driver for porting games to the ARM platform, or even partner with Nvidia for a custom Tegra based SoC that could compete with the existing x86 handheld but with an advantage of the ARM efficiency. The Surface team do a great job with their portable devices and it's just disappointing for them to abandon that for generic Asus hardware. And I think Microsoft have the ability to pull that off and have games embrace the ARM arch, rather than be locked to x86.
Instead we get a meetoo device that will end up being discontinued after a year.

The 1k unit is garbage price.

But the 600USD unit, what are the comparisons performance wise? Is there any benchmarks of the chip it uses to compare to the current handhelds?

Nope. Have an OLED Steam Deck, a PC, a PS5 Pro, and a Switch 2. Done with Xbox have this last gen. I'll play the games they release on everything else I have. Those are already an Xbox anyway.

I had my arc ultra from release and you would not regret getting it. Your wallet will because you will want the sub 4 and 300s as rears shortly after just like me 😆

If I was into handheld PCs, I'd probably be picking the Xbox Ally X over the Steam Deck (underpowered), ROG Ally (compromised controls), or Lenovo Legion Go (too expensive).

But I'm not into handheld PCs. Despite a lot of media coverage, the market for these is still extremely small.

Even the breakout Steam Deck has an estimated lifetime sales of under 5 million, but the way the media talks about it you'd think it's a legitimate threat to the Switch 2 or something.

Of course not - why get this over a steam deck if you have no handheld even? The ui seems buggy and unfinished

No, I'm good with the Switch 2 and ROG Ally X. I'm only interested in the UI which releases next year to windows handhelds. Also good luck with those prices. I can't see anyone except die hard Xbox fanboys buying one of these.

I have a sub and a pair of 300's already paired with the original arc but I'm so tempted to go ultra.
