Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 missing checkerboard/dithering effect on Switch 2 (comparison inside)

Thinking about taking my old Wii-U and games including both Mario Galaxy's into Gamestop this weekend to trade in.
But I don't know if I have all the parts. I stuffed it all into a box and it has not been touched in over a decade. :(
Wii-U, screen pad controller thingy, light bar that goes over the tv, power cords, I seem to remember a charging stand with it's own power cord too.
What else is required?
I would try eBay or another site vs GameStop. The latter will give you barely anything.

Think I'll stick to the Wii version.
They absolutly murdered some of those textures. The metal textures on the bridge and the AI downscaled cobblestone are just ugly. No bueno.

I bet the 4k texture packs for emulators are more true to the original.

That's horrible, all the texture is gone. Not literally... but actually!

I think this is the metal floor texture for the bowling bit, from a 4k HD texture pack (512x512).
Sadly I don't have a save file that far into the game for a comparison shot.

The pasterns exist.

Also:

Overall looks pretty "same".

Did they not even up-res the wii-u version? Or is that just the wii game playing on wii-u with the same resolution?

I have the 3d all stars version on switch. I am wondering if it is the same with that version of galaxy 1. I will check later on.
Either way will still get this for galaxy 2.

This thread inspired me to finally start SMG1 on PC.

Game looks good enough as it is when bumped to 4K, but with the texture pack looks super clean.

If you play with a dualshock4/Dualsense, or any controller with motion control you can collect the stars with motions instead of using the right stick like some Xbox user.

I honestly wish they just used AI for these textures, because so many of the models out there can retain the art style of the original, but just give you a sharper result.

Some of these just straight up wipe out detail to make a simpler flatter look result, when the average HD texture pack for emulators wipes the floor with these.

It blows my mind that there are people who legitimately can't see the difference. Many of the textures have completely lost their detail, and the differences aren't exactly subtle.
Yeah I didn't expect even such in-your-face textures to be missing, initially all I noticed was the faint checkerboarding/dithering effect. Though the latter actually bothers me more because it's such a unique visual quirk--nice contrast to all the glossiness and even gives a bit of a playful papercraft vibe

Even Smash Bros. made sure to retain it:

Of course it goes especially well with surfaces that are meant to look like fabric or cake stuff

I did it, I traded in the old Wii-U and all my games.
$79.20 Wii-U
$10.40 Mario Galaxy 1 Wii
$13.00 Mario Galaxy 2 Wii
$ 7.80 Bayonetta 2 (included 1) Wii-U
$ 0.32 Mario 3D World Wii-U
Several other old Wii games but they were all under $1.
A couple of nunchucks and Wiimotes
$140.00 Grand total.
Pre-ordered Super Mario Galaxy 1+2 Switch for $75.76
Got some money left over for something. What I don't know.

So how bad did I get ripped off? I thought it was pretty good for a device that has been sitting in the closet for almost a decade.

I like that hatched stitch look on the textures so it's a shame it's missing but I'll still buy it. It'll be nice and convenient to play it in 4K on the Switch 2 with joycon motion controls.

Well, it looks like you might have gotten rid of the better version of Mario Galaxy 1 and 2, so there's that.

The colour banding/posterization of the sky in the first screenshot is hideous.

But overall. It looks like it's been ran through AI and called it a day. The later screenshot of the metal floor loosing all it's texture work is just bad. Same as the moon surface. Reminds me of some of the abysmal GTA DE texture work for signs etc.

But Nintendo won't care. People will buy regardless.

This isn't the Silent Hill HD Remaster type of retexturing.

Damn that's probably the best way to describe it

Also was bored and made a Galaxy 1/2 cinegrid. These games really don't need any graphics update (besides resolution)
AUSHq1YtcWAmpVEo.jpg
This is a great example of one reason I think Galay 1/2 are still the peak of 3D Mario. I think it could be topped but I don't think it was topped by the most recent effort (Odyssey).

Yeah. You can play these in Dolphin with the resolution cranked up. Even in HD, they really pop. I just played some Galaxy 2 on the computer.

In order for the Wiimote speakers to work in Dolphin, you need the final model of the Wiimote. Earlier models don't work.

Really, Mario kind of peaked with Galaxy.

what the fuck happened to his hair? the fuck? it's not even purple anymore, it's straight up blue.
Manga/Anime error that started with Bulma in the original DB, and corrected years later for Super:

They corrected this in an odd way by making the 'younger' Briefs-family hair into purple, and 'older' Briefs-family hair into blue:

Sort of like in real life how some people with blond hair can end up with a slightly darker shade when aging.

Yeah, going back to Galaxy 1 again after Odyssey was such an eye opener. I enjoyed Odyssey, but the mass of uninteresting collectibles and aimless exploration put a damper on a lot of the experience. I stopped playing in the last level and still haven't gone back 8 years later.

Galaxy, by contrast, just bombards you with ideas, and there's really no regard for how well it fits the level or any of that trite bullshit - just make a new planet and send the player there for some reason. These two games were all about fun. I genuinely don't think Nintendo will ever top those, nor do I think they're capable of it anymore.

There's absolutely no way this can be true, surely? An AI upscale could have done better.
If it is then it's absolutely inexcusable and Nintendo deserves the bad publicity over this.
It's two of their flagship games and they deserve better obviously.

I'm curious to see if these apparent removals actually take place in the final releases of these games. The DF analysis will be a good one.

Which you can do for many years and without having to plunk down almost full price (a second time)

I dont want to play on my desktop computer fiddling with emulators. I want to play it on my big screen TV in the living room.

Unless I'm mistaken we are now the 29th September, the game comes out in the next few days (this week at least) and we have yet to actually get any DIRECT feed screenshots or videos from an actual switch since no one has the game (or those that may have it are under embargo)

All of this flustering and shouting and outrage is all based off of compressed videos from YouTube or whichever algorithm Nintendo use for video off their website, is that correct or has there been official press direct feed video released so that this can be looked at properly without all the fanboy screetching?

Yes it's a switch 1 game, Nintendo have said (just like the patch for Pokémon violet/scarlet for example) there will be a patch for the switch 2 that will unlock the resolution etc further that no one has seen outside of Nintendo.

Yes some of this is a filthy cashgrab

Personally I don't care as I have a preorder of the physical for the 2 pack which I got secured at £42 and I'm ok with that price.

As for the port status of both games of 1 & 2 on the switch and switch 2 I'll reserve comment until people have it in hand and we can get direct feed from both handheld and docked.

I'm not expecting anything much other than these being thrown into Nintendo's latest Wii emulator updated for switch and switch 2 (just like galaxy 1 from the last all stars cartridge) and that the switch 2 version of the emulator will be able to utilise the more power available. Although in the case of galaxy 1 from the last collection I can't remember if that was based off the direct port that came from the nvidia collaboration that got released in China to account for lack of motions controls.
Either way galaxy 2 will have needed extra work on the controls and possibly some graphics replaced to reflect the new control system and we have the added amiibo support of 2 new super Mario galaxy amibo which they have detailed will provide extra functionality to these games - although they aren't released until next year so I would be surprised if the amiibo support is available at launch

We all knew they were going to pull something like this when the 35th anniversary pack had galaxy 2 missing.

I suspect for the 45th anniversary there will be a pack including 3d land and maybe if we are really lucky there will be a compilation/pack for the 50th that has all the nsmb games in it..
set your expectations low and if whatever gets released isn't for you move on and spend your money on something else

These titles will never be discounted digitally so if you do want them digitally go hunting for discounted eshop gift cards, every now and then there are some decent bargains out there, not often but they can happen

Yep, I bought eShop GCs for 25% off so I got these for like $53. I can live with that.

And as you said, all of this "analysis" about visual changes are going off of compressed YouTube videos. I really want to see what impressions look like once these actually come out.

Nintendo has the easiest job of any gaming company ever when they make ports, remasters or remakes yet they cant get it right? Why? I do not understand. Are they that cheap to cut corners and also overprice at the same time? Have them remake pong and it will be a worse version than the original lol.

Can't really say it's that overpriced if you shop around, grabbed it for like £36 puts it in the low budget catergory.

Sunshine/Moonlight...or just a common HDMI cable. Feels like something you'd already have set up if 4K is that important to you and with Nintendo only just now getting there

well, the fiddling with emulator part has been solved it seems:

Clearest videos yet. Seems it really is missing but the reason is probably because they've replaced it with actually improved texture detail.

Seems obvious to me that the dithering effect - and this is true for other applications of dithering - was there to increase the perception of detail. Remember that this is a game designed around standard definition resolution. Now in 4K, the artists can replace that dither pattern with actual detail like tiny pebbles and grass blades.

Obviously it isn't just a pre-HD thing or something a lot of games of that era did. At the very least I see it as another example of them intentionally leaning into technical limitations for style points, just like the big random circles or leaf shapes instead of actual leaves here
agjHeCczVXhovoIJ.png

Not even sure why it's hard to believe that these patterns, sometimes checkerboarding and sometimes literal weave textures, are intentional when Nintendo literally made a bunch of games with this style

Reminder Galaxy is literally a bedstime story, for that reason alone the bed sheet/plushie patterns are actually pretty fitting and not that random
