[IGN] I’m Getting Bored of Every PlayStation Game Telling the Same Story

I was bored like 4 years ago.

It's really not just the stories, but the general presentation, gameplay hooks, tropes and themes, difficulty level. It's a very homogenous operation and has been for some time.

Personally, I don't see it changing at all. Seems to me like a lot of mainstream fans have never been more conservative and unadventurous and these games are for the mainest of the mainstream. They don't like new things, new IP, new and unfamiliar gameplay.

Damn, even IGN getting some common sense these days.

Though, they're probably talking about something other than men being written as inept dummies and women begrudgingly having to save them/show them what they are doing wrong..

Doing another revenge story after Ghosts 1 is bad. They shouldve continued Ghost 1's plot and explored mainland Japan.

That said, Death Stranding 2's story is anything but boring. yes, its about loss but the entire plot is full of new ideas and themes that are not related to Sam and Lou.

Same goes for distilling Spiderman 2's story down to family matters. Absolutely retarded.

And GOW Ragnorak is literally about ragnorak. Just because there is a side plot of a son and dad hashing out their differences doesnt mean the story is about that. The IGN writer does realize that everyone has a mom, dad and a family? of course those themes are going to play in a story.

Not sure what HFW or Ratchet have in common anyway. HZD maybe because she was looking for her mother, but other than that the story in the game had nothing to do with family matters.

DEI seal of approval

Every blockbuster movie is the same, too. They're definitely borrowing from that formula 😕

Trying something new is too risky with these large budgets.

AA games push the envelope.

AAA games don't push anything.

AAAA games…push us backwards.

Sure takes some balls to release another revenge story the same year KCD2 has been released. No way to beat that one.

Sony used to have a very diverse line-up of exclusives.

You had the third-person action titles, but they also gave us arcade racers, racing sims, FPS (Bring back Killzone!) JRPGs, puzzle games and probably a load more I can't think of. PS3 era Sony was probably peak for this.

Now, it's almost exclusively third person action titles, and I'm fucking bored of them. Give me some variety, Sony!

Death Stranding is crazy underrated. It was one of the few good things to come out of Sony recently and people hated it. They call Death Stranding a "walking simulator" when it's actually less of one than shit like GoW. Lots of systems and complexity that just got brushed aside and dismissed.

Eh....I just wish their output cadence was better. The stories seem fine to me. I do think Sucker Punch needs to move on from Japan after GoY.

Every blockbuster movie is the same, too.
John Wick 1-4
Kill Bill 1-2
Every Samurai Film
Etc
Etc

The fuck is he talking about?

Horizon is about saving the world in a post apocalyptic scenario
Gow is about a father and son buring ashes and the sequel is about ragnarock
Tlou was basically the road mixed with zombie apocalypse, tlou2 was about revenge cycles
Ds1 was about fart sniffing with the deaths and ds2 is about sniffing farts while taking pics of famous female actresses
Tsushi 1 was about mongolian invasion and honor values, yotei is about personal vengeance
Uncharted are rip off indiana jones
Infamous are superhero stuff and all 3 have different themes

Ghosts of Yotei is another revenge story when it should have been about the increasing proliferation of fabricated half-inch pipes at the turn of the 16th century.

Yeah i have to agree look at Gran Turismo for example. The story of those games are the same with every entry you go and beat all the races then you collect all the cars and then finally you hunt down and battle the Toyota 6 for killing your pit crew./s

  • strong female with agenda/revenge in mind/something to prove
  • heavy cinematic presentation focus with light gameplay elements
  • open world with towers to reveal new areas
  • collectibles to find throughout
  • minor RPG elements with skill trees
same formula since 1999

And the "RPG elements" are inconsequential anyway, just like recent Bethesda games.

I'm honestly more exhausted with the games that handhold you for 10 hours+ with tutorials.

Can we please have a system wide option for "have you ever played a video game before???" that automatically skips all of that.

Wait, IGN is complaining about the same lame revenge story over and over again?

No, impossible. People love revenge stories.

I'm getting bored of every AAA game playing exactly the same. There is zero creativity in gameplay design anymore, with the exception of Astro Bot. (And even that game had pretty safe base gameplay; it's the stage gimmicks that were inventive.)

And remember Astrobot? The way he is going on that rampage looking for the other bots and then defeats the final boss that took all of them...similar to Crash Bandicoot looking for his sister, Jak because of what they did to him in Jak 2...Spyro in every game until the final boss...and every game where main boss does something in the first hour and you go through multiple levels until you defeat him / her / it in the last hour :(

Wait... all games are the same. Cancel the industry. Xbox is right as usual. It's not worth it anymore. Cancel your consoles, subscription services. Read a book instead.

Hum...what a fucking stretch. None of those games are similar. How can you look at TLOU2, Spider-Man 2 and DS2 and think "yeah...same story"?
100% agree with you, but I'm also of the opinion that more lighter non Hollywood script level games on the order of AstroBot would be welcome to break up the big setpiece games. It feels like we're not getting much of that outside Nintendo as usual. Would be nice to see 1st parties go back to their roots.

Really just more 15-20 hour games in general that I can actually finish in a reasonable time would be welcome. Being a working adult sucks.
