[IGN] I’m Getting Bored of Every PlayStation Game Telling the Same Story

images
Is that Spider-Man? GOW? Horizon? 🤷‍♂️

As long as Playstation is located in California, creativity will stay dead. This is the main problem currently.

I think only 2 games are about vengence currently.
If this is because of Yotei, they do realise that most Samurai films are revenge plots?
Sure if we talk about movies. But there are much more interesting material from Japan about Samurai. The main problem is lack of imagination, they just copy paste some famous Samurai movies (infused with woke ideology obviously).

I wouldn't say Sony is telling the same story - it's more that they all deliver the narrative in the same exhausting way.

Look up Pacing Charts in Video Games and you'll see Sony First-Party just do the same shit which creates an over familiarity when playing their games.

It is why people like Returnal. It's just action action action and then a random one minute first-person sequence.

You play Horizon, God of War, TLOU and Ghost - 2 hours of player on-boarding garunteed every time and just over-produced cinematics spliced in too much with obvious padded sequences because they need to hit that imaginary 40 hour marker for some reason.

Christ, what a terrible hot take that strips away any nuance to the stories to instead focus on a broader element that's prevalent in most games assuming they are even attempting a story. What next? Every Nintendo game is a "rescue the princess" trope? I don't expect much from IGN, but they sure as hell can do better than clickbait titles that would be embarrassing on even a forum from the trolls.

And amazingly, the only good one - Days Gone - they shelved.

To think Days Gone 2 would have been out already. Would have been a early 2024 game.

People were shitting on John Garvin but he is absolutely vindicated now since he batted for his baby in Days Gone 2 while others at Bend and Sony were pushing for GaaS! What a disaster with that IP and that studio is on thin ice now.

Some PS games have similar themes? sure. But I don't think Astro Bot, Returnal, Until Dawn, Death Stranding, freaking Bloodborne or Spiderman are telling the same story. What games is this person playing?

Not knowing what he was cooking for the story after THAT secret finale is gonna be one the biggets squanders in modern gaming history...

What a stupid article from IGN! What does it have to do with Astrobot, Ghost of Yotei, Saros, or Wolverine? It only serves to give PS haters something to talk about and get visitors.

The only thing I felt sounded samey was the Yotei plot and AC Shadows plot.
They both do the samurai, family killed when young, go after the specific group of bad men.

I was bored like 4 years ago.

It's really not just the stories, but the general presentation, gameplay hooks, tropes and themes, difficulty level. It's a very homogenous operation and has been for some time.

Personally, I don't see it changing at all. Seems to me like a lot of mainstream fans have never been more conservative and unadventurous and these games are for the mainest of the mainstream. They don't like new things, new IP, new and unfamiliar gameplay.
Video games have become big business now. Before there were a lot more risks and pure love poured into them. Now it's about being safe, being accessible, being politically correct whatever that means at the time. It's about share holders, and bonus compensations. It's following the movie and tv industry of yesteryear as well. Now all the shows are the same, there are two many. Trying to teach us moral lessons etc.

To means games are about breaking free from the eveyday! I wanna be a flying zombie, or a brutal monster it's my escape without drowning myself in liquor or drugs.

Sadly I don't see a way out, but hopefully we get a side quest from someone who helps fix this or we may just have to find another hobbie

Sony used to have a very diverse line-up of exclusives.

You had the third-person action titles, but they also gave us arcade racers, racing sims, FPS (Bring back Killzone!) JRPGs, puzzle games and probably a load more I can't think of. PS3 era Sony was probably peak for this.

Now, it's almost exclusively third person action titles, and I'm fucking bored of them. Give me some variety, Sony!
Those days loooooooooooooooooong gone, especially this gen when 90% of Sony exclusives are western games.

me want video games not video stories

a good story elevates a game, but its expendable at the end of the day
sony games are boring because the gameplays boring

AAA space is homogenizing for sure. Luckily there's a lot of crazy experimentation with indies and AA games still.

I just will never forget all the reactions on here to Indiana Jones. People endlessly demanding it be exactly like the 5 Uncharted games, and 3 modern Tomb Raider games they already played. That about sums it up. A lot of people genuinely don't want to play things outside of their comfort zone, so these games will always be made.

Not all of them; games like Astro Bot and Returnal are excellent.

Now, games like TLOU2, GoW Ragnarok, Spider-Man 2, Ghost of Yotei... just disappointing.

Plz explain where I've missed.

I don't necessarily think it applies to all their games:
Aloy from Horizon doesn't fit, though she is a boring stoic character (though admitedly revenge/grief isn't a big theme in Horizon)
Selene from Returnal doesn't either, but she is a boring stoic character dealing with grief
Jin from Tsushima and the new female character don't either, but they are serious stoic characters on a quest for revenge.

Its ironic Sony caring all about diversity, when their games are so less diversity those days.
Unfortunately True, its very hard for me excited for ANY Sony's upcoming games.

Capcom does more unique games than Sony this gen.

Hum...what a fucking stretch. None of those games are similar. How can you look at TLOU2, Spider-Man 2 and DS2 and think "yeah...same story"?

Because it's a Xbox made distraction story. It's just #SonyToo in a different wrapper. Nobody thinks the story in Spiderman 2, TLOU2 and Death Stranding 2 are the same.

Is the only thing that keep my Playstation 5 alive are the third party games.

As soon as Playstation stop using physical media, Nintendo Switch 2 and foward will be my only main console.

I get that - but a negative piece on Xbox released 24 hours ago supports my position that they aren't Xbox shills

I wasn't citing to it for relevance to anything other than that point I was making

Again, I agree both are true. The state of gaming outside of PC is largely sucky IMO

They are two different authors. IGN isn't one voice. But if that was the point you were trying to make then ok. I agree folks are not "shills" just because they write articles that are not favorable to one brand. Ryan McCaffrey is a huge Xbox fan and he doesn't hide it. I don't know this guy.

True, the treasure hunt stories. Like Uncharted !!!

We really do need another Uncharted... but I'm afraid they'll gay it up in current year.
The protagonist would 100% be Drake's daughter if Naughty Dog has any input. I'm not even saying that's a bad thing, but they're done with Drakes (and Joels and Jaks, for that matter).

Skimmed the article, there's a poll at the end: "Do you feel that Playstation needs to lighten up?" It gives a clearer picture of what the article is about than the title.

The author wants more light-hearted games and less games about grief and revenge. Can't say I agree. Devs should make what they want to make and we can choose to play or not. Him getting tired of serious themes indicates he should either stick with Sony games that don't have those themes or play games from other developers.

The rest of Capcom's output this generation is a sea of the exact same IPs being milked over and over again.
At least they make unique games and honestly the IP they "milked" I like more then Sony's first party this gen.

I cant even think of single game I should be looking forward from them this year or next year.

That's precisely the point I'm making — they aren't one voice. Labeling them as "Xbox shills" is just a lazy way to dismiss the article rather than actually engaging with the content.

I've said this a few times already, but we are saying the same thing.
