[Insider Gaming] Black Ops 7 Beta Debuts to Woeful Numbers on Two Major Platforms

Call of Duty: Black Ops 7's early access beta is here and, by all accounts, is not doing too well. When compared to this year's big opponent, Battlefield 6, Activision's latest first-person shooter is struggling on two major platforms – Steam and Twitch.

On Steam, Call of Duty has produced a 24-hour peak of just under 75,000 users. By comparison, Battlefield 6's peak at the same point during the early access beta window was around 335,000 users. On Twitch, Black Ops 7 has 185,000 viewers at the time of publishing, while at a similar time in the beta window, Battlefield 6 had 504,000.

Will Things Get Better On The Weekend?

Black Ops 7 is this year's Call of Duty title, and following this week's Call of Duty NEXT event, feelings about the title are mixed within the community. For many, it's a reskin of Black Ops 6, and for others, it represents a stunning title with incredible movement that's sure to be the best thing since sliced bread.

If somehow Battlefield starts stealing COD's thunder after MS buying Activision for 70 billion, after basically giving up on the console business and starting to sabotage Came Pass i may have to laugh a bit.

They may need to take a break for this IP and come back with a decent update in the future.

Played cod yearly with the exception of Vanguard. Skipped that one.

I am skipping it this year. BO7 is completely unnecessary and battlefield 6 is amazing. So I know where my money is going.

Should point out that 35k of those 75k were already playing BO6 or Warzone.

COD has been stale for years and years and I feel like it's the same game over and over and over again. They keep rebooting it and rebooting the stories because there's only so much you can do with a shooting franchise yearly to try and keep it fresh. Too bad it's been spoiled for a very long time now.

The game has been shit for years, BO6 is a joke, people kept playing because there was no alternative. There is an alternative now and no surprise if people are dropping COD for BF.

It looks like Black Ops 3 in the sense that its a true followup to Black Ops 2. This would have been really awesome…if it had come out like in 2015. I'm personally skipping and waiting for Infinity Ward's game next year since MW 2019 & 2022 were brilliant.

Honestly hoping it's true, but i wouldn't call Steam a major platform for CoD, it'll probably account for 10% of it's sales just like last year, Fifa also did worse numbers there than last year, but it doesn't mean anything as CoD, Fifa, Fornite and all that gang dominate hard on consoles, or on PS4-5 nowadays.

This said, Battlefield's numbers on PC are surprising, it was doing better than CoD in the past, but it had just fine numbers, probably still way lower than in consoles, but it seems BF6 is going to hit hard on Steam, some policies like putting the game at "just" 70€ helped i guess

Their biggest platform (outside of mobile) is PC.

You really think all them players are on Battle Net?

Platform Breakdown from Kotick (June 2023)
  • Mobile: 51%
  • PC: 25%
  • PlayStation: 16%
  • Xbox: 8%

The fact that CoD became a joke with brainrot skins plus cringe moves and the possibility of BF6 being back just cannibalizes the numbers.

It's just more multiplayer on a couple of maps, no wonder, the beta is so fucking boring...

HOWEVER, I will be back for Zombies, and Resurgence on the Liberty Falls map, and Avalon Warzone next year.

Idk if it matters, there are probably more like me who don't find the beta interesting, but for the record, the game is "free" on Gamepass PC.
Those numbers are before any Call of Duty game was available on Game Pass.

Can't imagine that will be a huge factor in the future either given the news from a couple of days back.

Based on these numbers, CoD has 70M daily users, with like 15-20M of these being on PC, but the CoD launcher on Steam has been peaking around 40k lately ( 100k-150k as of early-mid 2023), so you tell me where they are.

It really looks like some typical real but fake numbers given by Activision during the acquisition trial to try to make the deal go through, probably counting the whole Battle.net logins or whatever.

Black Ops 6 made over 80% of it's revenue on first month on Playstation on USA and UK, with PC and Xbox getting the other 20%.

If there's still crossplay in BO7 you can just check any lobby and see how almost all players on each game are PS players once it releases

When they start going Sci Fi etc. that's usually when i tap out.
Its either past conflict or Modern here. Black Ops is not the series for me and i avoid it like the plague.

Really enjoyed the Battlefield beta and after skipping BLOPS last year obviously- im really excited for BF. COD has lost its way again and it usually takes a good MW to correct it.

Lying in court? Bobby has done a lot of shady shit but I would seriously doubt it, especially as he wanted the deal to go through so he could get his final payday.

The raw numbers were likely plucked from a peak during covid. That doesn't change the composition of them. There are more Cod players on pc than PS and Xbox combined.

We've had this nonsense from Cod dickriders for years. When the Steam numbers are good it counts, when they're bad it doesn't.

I'm going to bet it does fine on launch. If you're comparing beta numbers with Battlefield even their 300,000 is nothing compared to what those games sell. I play COD every year but I'm not jumping into a beta. I already know what COD is I don't need to test it out. Battlefield is way more of an unknown after a decade of bad games so of course people are jumping in to see if it's trash.

How does it compare to previous years? Comparing it to BF6 seems pointless when BF5 launched 7 years ago - obviously people will want to check out the new title.
I've never really gotten in to CoD, I think Black Ops 1 or 2 is the only one I ever put any time into. I much prefer battlefield (but barely played anything past 4) but this comparison is kinda dumb.

Whats baffling to me, is how easy it would be to course correct on COD. Announce that the next game has zero SBMM. No in-game manipulation. Zero non-military skins. No micro-transactions, but new maps will be in map packs like they used to be, for 10$.

I've been in the COD game since the start. I'm out. BO6 was such a chunk of garbage, its soured me to the core. The game manipulation was just off the charts.

I've always been meh on battlefield as it just feels "off" from COD, but with COD in its current horrific state, and BF6 with death match, ill give it a go. Used to LOVE Blackout, and Warzone, but thats even worse these days. Maybe BF6 version will be playable this time, who knows.

don't worry fellas, increasing the GP subscription will force all those people to buy CoD day one.

The negativity around cod has been as high as ever.. is this negativity finally going to reflect in sales?

Near future setting with space guns will ruin this game. Been saying it since the reveal. The new audience wants nothing to do with fake space guns. They're going to need MW IV with a quickness to make up for this slopburger. 3arc has always been overrated.

I could have added a number to the ps5 count but the beta won't work for me even though I got a valid code. Buying BF6 anyway but I just wanted a taste of the shit show.

I felt like this was the same shit back when BF3 launched and everyone moved to it from CoD's release of MW3(OG). Activision has no one to blame though but themselves . They tried to be Fortnite in black ops 6 and it looked horrible.

They need to go back to 3 developer cycle for CoD, or just skip a damn year. Give each CoD two years on the market before a new one comes out. This crap with IW making two in a roll and then Treyarch ain't working.

yup, history repeating itself. COD getting too samey with no iteration or innovation, Battlefield coming to eat its lunch, if this continiues maybe we'll get a new titanfalll too.
