The Outer Worlds 2 - Reviews Thread

VGC gave the game a 6/10. Has gripes about the satire coming from a studio owned by Microsoft

However, in the modern world, it's impossible to divorce these rhetorics from the fact that Obsidian is an Xbox Game Studio under Microsoft, a company that has perpetually laid off workers and shuttered studios in recent times.

This is no different than that one site assigning a dildo reviewer to review Hogwarts.

If the guy wants to write a political column about it then have at it, but if he personally is unable to "divorce" real life shit from the satirical messaging in the game then he shouldn't be reviewing it. Most folks don't read reviews for political takes.

Have very little faith in Obsidian after Avowed but I still have Game Pass for another two months so I'll be giving it a shot against my better judgment

I have never forgotten av game as fast as the first one. I started it, played 2-3 hours. got off the first planet i think and then... never started the game again
I finished it and have the same memories of the game as you do. You missed nothing.

It's Steam or nothing unless it's GOG and far cheaper
I always find this a weird sentiment, but I do exactly the same myself.

I've bought a couple of things on epic and always regretted it - Alan wake 2 and Hades. That's purchasing it on there not the games themselves.

Rockstar launcher for GTA / RDR2

Ubi I bought the division 2 on that for some crazy reason.

Can't think what else offhand

Steam is legit and I adore it. I do

Czech review at games.cz is just brutal:

The world of The Outer Worlds 2 is predictable, flat, constantly satirical, and filled with constant superficial jokes. From the first moment, the game turns on the highest speed in spewing slogans, but they are rarely more subtle than: Ha ha, fascism bad. Or you will hear even more often: Ha ha, capitalism bad. Which, coming from under one of the richest companies in the world, sounds hypocritical to say the least.

The real satire then is the fact that The Outer Worlds 2 was supposed to be Microsoft's first $80 game - ha ha, capitalism!
...
The setting of The Outer Worlds 2 might have worked better if it wasn't technically the same game as its predecessor. You're once again in a dead, outdated world with rubber looking NPCs who are actually just extras for your theater. The quests are predictable messes that, with a few exceptions, offer nothing interesting.

When an ambitious corporate rectal alpinist sends you for a mysterious plan that will surely contain something technologically revolutionary that will allow him to make a huge profit and climb the corporate ladder, you know very well that the whole "twist" is built around the subject being completely banal. And lo and behold, it's a futuristic potato peeler. Ha ha, excellent joke, never heard that one!

Likewise, it is abundantly clear that the man who wants to lead you to his wounded family to help them is actually leading you into a trap. How many times have we seen this in different variations?

He still gave it 6/10 for the decent combat and some good characters though. Coward.

I played Outer Worlds and TBH I don't remember a single thing from that game. I think they tried to make New Vegas, but I checked and Josh Sawyer (who was a narrative designer for NV) was not on the project. At the end of the day I can deal with jank, I can't deal with shit writing.

I think that was John Gonzalez.

If anything I loved how they trolled a microsoft announcement in their first trailer

Why wouldn't a dev have satire that goes against their publishing house? Microsoft can have a laugh too ffs.

Futurama was a satire and funded by a big corporation like the vast majority of the entertainment stuff on this subject.

I've read that TOW2 is less humorous than the first one just like Borderlands 4 against the previous games, it has become kinda like a cynical era where people cannot stand almost any humor based WRPGs and such instead of pointing out its lows to be fixed in DLCs/sequels.

General sentiment counts if it's from people who actually played the game, not the 'but woke' critique crowd whose only point of reference is smashjt or the like. 🤷‍♂️
That can come from Steam Reviews. If the game has a broad enough base, overall Steam reviews are a decent measure.

I will throw Starfield as another example of a mediocre game that got much higher review scores than it deserved.

Plus, let's face it, review inflation between now and when New Vegas released is quite real.
