[Rumor] New Symbols Hint at Crossbuy between PlayStation and PC

BryanK going to PC?

This is exactly what they need to do to compete in the PC market, need to also allow all games purchased to be streamed as well (which I think also is something that is rumoured to be happening).

Smart since there's no other chance of survival is Xbox does what we think they're gonna do. The launch library will just be too much to overcome. 2 million titles vs 13 and most* PS5 games? Plus we swear Naughty Dog will release a game for this one! Promise. Maybe even Bend too if you fans behave on X!

Hopefully they had some PC exclusive tech features for Wolverine and Saros. It's what us PC players deserve.

I probably wouldn't care if Sony had their own launcher if it meant that I could buy once and play on both console and PC.

Sony fans are going to be really confused trying to talk shit on Xbox PC and Play Anywhere now 😅🤣

If their implementation is just as shit as it is with play anywhere then it will get the same scrutiny and criticism.

There are already people talking about how shit they anticipate any potential PC storefront being, along with the fact that the "crossbuy" will likely be via that said storefront.

All of that makes it a far less attractive proposition, and just like the situation with play anywhere, people who only game on PC aren't going to give a shit about any of this.

The difference is that people are actually having open discussions about it throughout this thread without the usual corporate zombies attempting to shut things down by dismissing people's valid concerns.

Nice try at attempting to drag the conversation down to your level though.

I think that PS5/PC icon(if it's even real) is about the account trophy-sharing a cross-progression, sounds way more credible than a PC launcher. Nothing pointing at PC store anyway, Sony just eased PSN-prison for few games like Tsushima on Steam just recently.

The account trophy sharing stuff already exists though if you link you psn account via one of their PC games on Steam. For example I've only ever played HZD remastered via the PC version (I haven't even purchased the upgrade on PS5) and this is how it appears on my trophy list:

And all the trophies I have for the game on my Steam account are also listed on my psn profile as psn trophies.

So if there's anything to all of this, then it points towards something else.

Looks like this guy might be the original source:

Topher Topher could be worth adding the above to the OP.

Added. That's good stuff. What would be the point of add PS5/PC icons next to "Cross Buy" and no other platforms? I can't imagine this is cross buy between PS and Steam.

That could be just a new indicator for the feature, in 3rd party games too. I dunno, really.

And I'm sure cross-buy is just for portable PS, just like low-powered mode.

Plenty of folks have speculated that Sony could open up their own PC store. I've pushed back on that, but if this is legit then it might actually happen.

I'm sure @onQ123 has a screenshot ready
I definitely remember Mibu no ookami Mibu no ookami talking about it multiple times.

Would be hilarious if the console companies start doing timed exclusives for their PC launchers to keep games off Steam next generation. EGS on steroids.
It's long been my opinion that timed exclusivity is going to make a comeback next-gen.

My theory is the reason it's not happening much anymore is due to lack of offers, not lack of takers. No coincidence that Sony and Nintendo are both showing record profits in an era where timed exclusivity is at its lowest.

SIE cannot possibly think people want their launcher on PC right? Their own first-party games don't even do that well on Steam (stellar blade aside for the gooners)

Windows is an open platform. Xbox will become an open platform too. Sony doesn't need to own the OS layer in order to build their ecosystem on top of Windows and Android.
If Sony has a pc store and PlayStation players migrate over to windows then Sony lose the 30% cut for 3rd parties sales in their own ecosystem. Why would they kneecap their business like that? If they are an icon on a windows desktop then that ex PlayStation console player is now captured by Microsoft. Yes windows is an open OS but it's Microsoft that are the beneficiaries of all the marketplaces converging in their OS. They have access to every user and will monetise them by selling data and advertising to them.

Sony have to look after their own business and what you are suggesting will lead to the death of the PlayStation ecosystem.

Sony is just not good with PC software. That goes back decades. I still remember their crappy ebook an mini disk sync software back in the day, lol. 😂

True, I remember those minidisc days too, but Sony isn't one person. They just have to hire the right people to get it done right this time.

Drop steam, Make it's own launcher and block Xbox platforms? (Honestly don't know if that's a possibility or not)

Not this game.

I own a few games that I can though :)

My son would enjoy playing against me as me and being a relief pitcher of course my in game stamina would run out after a couple of innings and he would light me up and just laugh his ass off
Lovely family gaming scenario, love it. Thanks for sharing, my old gent.

And you think they wouldn't? PS is basically sustaining Sony.

MLiD has said that Sony is having a strong direction to make PS6 as affordable as possible.

If Sony makes its own PC launcher (regardless of its business intentions), that would be the strongest way to protect its ecosystem and games. But let's see. Making a successful storefront is hard.

Ohh let me play the screenshot game

Back when a certain someone was still at Xbox he said several times PS games on PC was only a matter of time, day and date

At this point, I think the most foolish thing anyone can say in the gaming industry is "X will never happen". This generation has flipped some hard truths on their head. We are through the looking glass. People stopped making jokes about "bizarro world" because that's where we live now.

Guess the PS PC launcher lives after all huh?

If I had to guess, this is PS5 cross-buy with PS games on their own launcher. But if I also had to guess, I think it means they're going to push Day 1 for all or most of their games on PC...on their PlayStation PC storefront/launcher. When/if those games come to Steam or elsewhere, probably still the same 12-15 months timeframe for non-GAAS (and Day 1 for GAAS titles).

The crossbuy being for the handheld makes no sense because it won't need bespoke SKUs; it's just running the PlayStation console SKU with some power mode changes so the battery doesn't drain in 10 minutes of playtime. Imagine having a bespoke B2P SKU for a handheld made to play the console's games; that'd be a messaging nightmare for SIE.

I suppose, but there's a difference of sorts if "Day 1" (particularly for non-GAAS titles in this case) pertains to SIE's own PS storefront & launcher. At least in that case, they can implement security checks to cut out piracy and still retain/maximize lateral transfer of buying habits between the console and PC (since SIE'd be the platform holder of both the console and storefront).

If this instead is SIE going Day 1 on PC and not bringing about their own storefront, as in Day 1 on Steam or GOG or EGS, then all I can say is the level of stupid at SIE would be unprecedented in the industry. Or maybe better to say, the level of hubris & arrogance. Day 1 of games on massive storefronts outside of their control is what helped accelerate the brand irrelevancy of Xbox consoles this gen IMHO. Just because PlayStation has larger brand cache, doesn't mean they won't face some of type of similar erosion by trying the same putting their big blockbusters on competing storefronts like Steam Day 1.

I'd like to think SIE's leadership is smart enough to realize this, though. They shouldn't need people on forums to tell them what's right or wrong to do.

That is certainly a good way to limit their own PC sales, but hey, whatever works for them.

Their PC sales for the past few titles have been pretty garbage as-is so it's not like SIE'd be losing much of importance if they did it :/

Glad to see this mentioned, because it actually highlights the biggest risk SIE takes in bringing a storefront/launcher to PC/Windows. If it's only for their games, and if those games are present Day 1, then it could definitely convince a decent chunk of PS players to go to the PC storefront for 1P titles. But, they may also be more inclined to use Steam, EGS, GOG, Game Pass etc. for the 3P titles, and that would incur a big hit on SIE's revenue and profit margins (potentially).

Only way SIE could truly mitigate that risk is by having the same 3P software support on their launcher that they have on the console, right from the start. And that is probably nigh impossible.
