Microsoft published 6 big games this year. None were nominated for GOTY.

"We are always about the player. So when any games wins GOTY Xbox also wins that award since players win. Ultimately we care about player agency, not glitz or glamour....besides, and let me stress this again, we also won all of those awards tonight!"

Indy gets included since it was released after the game awards last year, right ?

What can Microsoft do at this point to garner that GOTY buzz they have been missing for well over a decade now.

The following games from MS studios including ones they inherited from the Activision and Zenimax deals were eligible.

- Indiana Jones
- Avowed
- South of Midnight
- Doom: Dark Ages
- Outer Worlds 2
- Call of Duty Black Ops 7

They had a fairly good year in terms of quantity. Most of these were good to great games. Just not GOTY worthy according to the VGA critics who are mostly made up of critics around the world. Are the studios they have acquired just not capable of making GOTY caliber games? Doom Eternal was nominated in 2020 iirc so they have at least one studio thats capable. And Phil did give them five years. They just failed. He also gave machine games 6 years to make Indy and they still couldnt beat a couple of indie games for a GOTY nomination.

COD Studios are basically never going to see a GOTY nomination which leaves Playground Games and Coalition Games. is there any hope for MS in the near future or do they need to retool? It's not like these games are lighting up the charts either so if they arent winning awards and arent selling well, how can MS afford to keep these studios around?
I think Indy and Doom for sure should have been nominated in adventure and action

The others though ... ehh

I mean surely "return to form" Obsidian should be nominated for something.

Right?

There's like a best quippy one liner categoery or most amount of different colors on screen at one time categoery?

Best art direction: no mention of Keeper at all, but they put in Ghost of Yotei of course and Hollow Knight Midsong.

Best game direction: Ghost of Yotei is in there lol. Best narrative, Ghost of Yotei. Best performance, Ghost of Yotei. Best music, Ghost of Yotei.

Best independent game, Ball x Pit? lol

My god.

it doesn't matter, these awards are just industry circlejerks in the end.
And MS is never going to win in that circle; hi-fi rush is one of the greatest things of all time and it couldn't land a GOTY nomination at the TGA's either.

Even Outer Worlds 1 was nominated in 2019.

And?

Indiana Jones and Ninja Gaiden 4 were both good games not GOTY but good none the less, and I thought both were WAYYYY better than death stranding 2.

And most of them range from mid to garbage. Waaay too much far from goty material. Specially this ultra colored piece of crap they call Avowed.

I played almost all of those except Black Ops 7, and it's all mid at best to me. That's the only problem, i don't care about that TGA crap and that's a shame people mostly do.

Probably not the fault of Microsoft if id software fumbled like that. Indy was interesting with good production value i think most people are positive about it, again it's all that matter.

Microsoft didn't deliver anything of value in 10 years so if they can at least have some "decent" releases like that every year they can start becoming relevant even if it's for a minority of players. Just stop considering they are a big publisher when they never release big games, and stop with that TGA normie stuff.

Sounds like i'm defending them but really it's the opposite, they've been so shit for so long that when they have at least some games with good production value and some personality they should be encouraged.

The closest would be indy and it's not all that. The graphics, presentation, and content are aaa but the gameplay can't rally support it. Not interesting enough in action, puzzles, or walky sim elements for it all to come together. I'd like to say it should have been a shorter, lower budget thing, but that would massively compromise a lot of it's appeal. In reality, it needed to be a lot more fun and it could have justified the scale and the msrp.

Avowed is my favorite game released this year not that it's that amazing I just don't like most of the hyped games. Couldn't care less about GOTY awards because I don't work for a game company.

I can't remember the last time I was that impressed by one of their games, Gears 3 and the original Forza Horizon maybe.

There usually seems to be some excuse and narrative as to why a good number of their games don't make the desired impact . It feels more like a fluke when they publish something worthwhile which is disappointing.

Over two decades in the industry and they push the "we are learning" guff.

Confused High Quality GIF

It won GOTY at TGA while not even nominated for GOTY (what this topic and my comment is about)? Curious.
these awards are just industry circlejerks in the end.
And MS is never going to win in that circle;
So, these awards overall

hi-fi rush is one of the greatest things of all time and it couldn't land a GOTY nomination at the TGA's either.

So, it doesn't matter, right? But you are salty about these awards anyway, even saying things like this :

hi-fi rush is one of the greatest things of all time

Yet you act like MS didn't kill the studio after all the bullshit these executives said

I guess that launching a lot of mid games just to fill a subscription service is not a good idea. Besides Indiana Jones, the other games on OP's list don't even deserve people's time.
