I really don't get it how anyone can still tolerate the shitty software upscaler on base console or the shitty IQ in more demanding games but ok.

it's funny that you say this and the first solution the comes to mind is an overpriced as fuck piece of hardware with a walled garden, IF you really cared that much about IQ the only option would be to buy a PC, infinitely more customization where you can choose where to spend your resources to get the IQ you like the most.

Honestly, PS5 Pro offers so little improvement that it is not worth it at all (right now), specially if you take into account that most games (some of the best available, also) are on PS4.

Honestly from the testing on games I play.

Gt7

There's hardly any difference between the pro and standard. I stand by that the pro is far from reaching its potential. Or, at least I hope it is because if this is what it can do then....yeah.

Like you said. If you care about resolution, effects, performance on the majority of games there is only pc as an option and I can guarantee modern pcs work amazingly well in a front room environment.

Care to read what at least I'm writing because I already said the price is surely too high and not worthy for the most where I ever said you are forced to buy one lol. I'm just saying how you can tolerate the shitty IQ of the base ps5 in most demanding game because for me it's impossible come back and I still prefer the ps5 pro. Anyway it's not like we don't know the ps5 pro specs, I'm not sure what exactly some of you expected from 44% of more raw power outside better IQ from PSSR.

It's fine, but honestly I'd say just go with a regular PS5. I can't really tell much a difference most of the time. Maybe it's the games I've been playing, dunno.

Astrobot is stunning IMO. MH Wilds is significantly improved at 60.

But im literally not playing games I want to play because im waiting for patches that may never come.

I've done PC Gaming before, I dont want the hassle associated with it and ideally id prefer the console "vibe". But right now im not playing games so.

I agree on Astrobot but it just gives a mild boost to dynamic rez and I think they added PSSR in the last update. Other games make a much bigger difference, so I think it's a bad example improvement wise.

I was originally at somewhat satisfied which moved to somewhat dissatisfied with the vrr bug, with that fixed I'm probably landing on neutral at the moment, but we'll see how I feel after Ghost of Yotei comes out and other PSSR related upgrades. Will be interesting if the Cyberpunk update involves PSSR.

I'm mildly considering a Pro, although based on my initial research and the large additional cost of it I'm mostly inclined to buy a regular PS5. So I was curious to pick the minds of Pro owners here on GAF.

I wasn't really sure where to start, but this thread seemed like a good place.

Currently you can get a Slim PS5 Digital for £289 with a game here in the UK. The best Pro deal i've seen is more like £580, although that was a price just for PS+ users.

So can I ask you guys and anyone else - how do you feel about your Pro purchase now? Would you recommend it?

I wanted to get the honest and balanced views of people who aren't PlayStation fanboys who would just tell me it's a no-brainer.

Do you plan to play death stranding 2, wolverine, ghost of yotei perhaps?

If so I'd say the pro is a no brainer if you pick it up in a sale.

Wolverine, yes, assuming it's good. DS2 - maybe one day. Yotei, definitely not.*

edit

* I found the first one very, very boring. Put about 16+ hours into it, saw a comment saying the game was 25-30 hours and immediately stopped playing as I just knew I couldn't hack that gameplay and story for that long.

Ask yourself if graphics is important to you? do you like owning physical copy that you are willing to spend extra money to buy disc drive for it?

Really have to take the "completely satisfied" group with a truckload of salt, since there's not been many games to take full advantage of the system. I suspect they picked that option to try and persuade people to buy one.

Bought mine in September along with the disk drive.
Love it so far, although the only thing I've played on it the last 3 weeks is arc raiders.
I bought 2 ps5's at launch, sold one for $750 for $250 profit on it, so my og ps5 that I kept cost me $250.
I traded it in September for the pro.
When I put the disk drive in the pro the plastic piece that snaps onto the pro covering the disk drive was mis-manufactured and would not snap onto the console.
Gamestop replaced the cover for me that day.
Love the 2tb of storage and I added a 2tb ssd so 4tb total of ssd storage.
The little triangular plastic pieces that make up the horizontal stand.......at least it's a little better than the stand they included with the og ps5.

OP here. I changed the poll so that voting is open again (it was closed before) and you can change your vote if you like.

I changed my vote from "mostly" to "somewhat" satisfied. I was initially enthused, but after a while I've grown less impressed. I've noticed some minor visual and performance upgrades, but I probably would've been fine sticking with the PS5. I guess I just wanted the best version.

I know, hence my caution.
For what it's worth, I don't own one despite having a tv that could take advantage of it. I just don't see the value being worth that kind of asking price, personally. On the other hand, I could see a valid purchase option if one wanted to extend this generation, and wasn't planning to buy a PS6 at launch.

If I were to get one, that would be my reason.

Yes, definitely on graphics. But it's not super super important otherwise obviously I would be investing in a high-end PC. So, within reason. And from my research it didn't seem like the Pro was a major upgrade across the board, which mostly seems to be down to the fact that the CPU is the same (?).

I feel like if the CPU had been beefed up significantly then this would probably be more a of 'no-brainer' choice. For me personally the most important thing would be bumping up framerates to get more games with locked 60fps.

Not sure about discs. I want the option, but with my Series X I have barely put a disc into it since I owned it. I know that the Pro doesn't come with a drive and that I would have to buy that seperately, which makes it even more expensive. Which is a shame.

I think I'd be fine with buying the disc drive later if I'm wanting to buy some cheap second hand games on disc. I am aware that I need to add the price of that to get a fair overall cost of the Pro in that situation.

I really appreciate the honesty, i'm very wary of people just automatically defending their purchase. But this is way more insightful.

Nothing wrong with wanting the best, it's perfectly understandable why a lot of gamers would snap this up. But you would never really understand the performance delta until you got your hands on it; i'm sure a lot of people assumed it would make more of a difference than it actually seems to.

I'm completely satisfied with mine. I haven't played many games on it and I'm not trying to sell anyone on one.
Take a few minutes, think about that and let it sink in. Look up how opinions work
Who are you to sit here and say that people arent satisfied with a product even though they say they are just because you personally have some issue with it? And you have no ground whatsoever to be making accusations of console shilling.
Grow up and get over yourself dude.

It's all about expectations and opinions, so I don't think people are trying to sell you one.

I am mostly satisfied, 75% the software upgrades have been good.

25% of games have been disappointing.

Am I right in thinking that you cannot turn of the Pro enhancements in games, like PSSR for instance?

Would you tell a friend who could afford it to buy one?

Sure. I think you caught me mid-edit, so the quoted portion is missing this bit (just adding this for those who're wondering where the supposed insight was):

I was initially enthused, but after a while I've grown less impressed. I've noticed some minor visual and performance upgrades, but I probably would've been fine sticking with the PS5. I guess I just wanted the best version.

I don't feel any need to "defend a purchase." It's not a house or car; it's just $700/800. I wouldn't lie on a poll just to make myself feel better (and that wouldn't work anyway). I certainly have no desire to "sell" anyone on it.

My opinion did change over time, though. I think that's pretty common with a new product. Initial excitement fades over time to "eh, it's okay" -- which where I am now.

I read that part in your post. I'm not sure why it wasn't included in my quote.

I am an inveterate editor of my own posts. You read v. 1.0 (which had that line), but by the time you pressed "quote," I had edited to v 1.1 (which didn't have that line). Then I added a similar line back for v. 1.2.

One of my unfortunate habits. I can't leave well enough alone, lol.

Good point about the PS6. I had been thinking about that. I was minded to wait for the PS6 and then play all the PS5 exclusives I had missed out on. Then I wondered if 2 or maybe 3 years seemed like a long wait.

I would almost certainly buy a PS6 at launch, assuming it had a minimally acceptable launch lineup and my financial situation was the same as it is now. So I feel that counts against getting a Pro somewhat, but maybe less so if the wait is 3 years.

I think you're view on the Pro will depend greatly on your preferred games, as some perform much better than others.

The ones that I have found have meaningful improvements so far are Ghost of Yotei, Balder's Gate 3, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, GT7, Stellar Blade, AC Shadows, Forza Horizon 5, Death Stranding 2, FF7 Rebirth, TLOU 1&2 and a few others, including R&C and The Crew Motorfest.

Luckily, most of the games that I like have decent Pro versions.

Plus, you can't underestimate some of the improvements to games that haven't received a Pro patch, such as The Witcher 3, GTAV and Cyberpunk for example.

My view is pretty positive so far, say a solid 8/10, but Sony really needs to improve the PSSR, particularly with some UE5 games. Thankfully, we're not too far from the next iteration of PSSR.

1. Some games let you select PSSR ON/OFF
2. Depends on the games said friend plays and intends to play. Overall you get better fps and/or resolution for almost all games, even without patches. Some game with patches have problems, but *to me* there's a an exaggeration on the bad ones. This video might help, as it also tackles newer patches for some games that had issues:

I like the Pro, but honestly I would have been perfectly fine without it. I don't know that I would pay twice as much for a Pro as I would a Slim DE, but the Pro does have more internal storage so that helps.

I should watch that one.

I was dumb and bought a Steam Deck OLED around the same time I traded up my PS5 Slim to a Pro. Other than playing through Spider-man 2, I really haven't touched it where as I'm playing my SD practically daily, and because of all the Steam Sales, my Steam digital library is significantly larger than my Playstation (and I don't even own a gaming pc). The Ps5 Pro is not a bad console at all. I just don't think there is alot of reasons to own one at the moment. Now that GTA6's date keeps on slipping .... uggghh. Well there is at least Wolverine and Saros next year and hopefully some exciting shit announced at The Game Awards.

I bought myself a Pro for Christmas. Next year should bring RE9, 007, Crimson Desert, Gears E-Day, Phantom Blade 0, Wolverine, amongst others, and that's all supposedly before GTA 6...so many upcoming games I'm excited to play. Definitely gonna get use out of mine.

I voted "somewhat satisfied" when the poll opened but it's dropped significantly since then. The support has been shit, and that needed to be standard for every game released after it launched. A lot of games don't get patched for the longest time or still still have graphical issues that might never get fixed. And, frankly, the biggest issue is IQ is still lacking in many games. They are either much blurrier than the PC counterparts or they have aggressive sharpening that you can't disable. I upgraded from the PS5 to the Pro to get a crisp image and that hasn't happened, so I basically stopped using the thing. Oh, and my Pro also has the internet issue where even when you are connected and can download updates, it won't connect to the store or load any of the store tiles. Even factory resetting this thing only works for a while before it comes back, and this has been a problem with PS since it launched and don't seem to care about fixing.

I voted somewhat satisfied. I was able to grab a used one with disc drive and stand for $600. I felt OK getting it at that price point. FFVII Rebirth looks great and I felt Clair Obscur had better image quality in performance mode. But I really haven't used it much beyond that. I primarily bought it since the next hardware I purchase will Probably be a PC so I wanted the best console experience to close out my time on consoles. From that standpoint I'd say it's a solid B so far.

When the ps5 pro deliver, I'm quite satisfied. But I won't lie, it's annoying when developers apply blindly PSSR barely care to adjust it when not work properly.

If you aren't planning on getting a PS6 anytime soon I'd probably go for the Pro if you wanna wait a while and just sit in the crossgen period. The Pro should be significantly improved once the Project Redstone/FSR4 patch hits and it will be the best place to play GTA6 if that's a concern to you. It's really just a question of money.

In games that make good use of PS5 Pro, the improvement is very evident compared to the base PS5 and will only improve over time. I'm looking forward to seeing Death Stranding 2 on the Pro.
The clarity isn't a big difference but wtf is that brown has that makes the non pro version look worse ?

Claiming hardly any difference on GT7 is wild. Astro Bot doesn't even have any major Pro specific enhancements, so that gets a pass.

The lack of support is really the only issue. The tech is good, but not enough developers are fully taking advantage of it.

I got a Pro only because I had some bonus money and wanted to treat myself. Also a little less dealing with the kids fighting over the PS5. I got what I expected, everything a little faster, a bit smoother, somewhat prettier. Worth it if you can afford the luxury, but a regular PS5 is still great.
