Metroid Prime 4: Beyond | Review Thread

Amiibos are mostly non-functional paperweights and that's fine. It's a toy. That completely meets people's expectations. Who's actually out there buying Amiibos for their in-game functionality.. I mean, really?

And why defend the practice of gating content behind Amiibos just because that's how they've worked for 8+ years? It was a bad practice then and it's a bad practice now. I don't think there's a lot of mental gymnastics required to understand the issue.
I'm not "defending" Anything. Just acknowledging the 'contract' We ALL took when welcoming Amiibos. Get Over it.

NOTHING has changed (except market prices).

why do you guys keep trying to argue with him ? its a waste of time

Half of the review is him complaining that the game plays like... Metroid Prime. What a waste of time it was.
The Skill Up review, like so many YouTubers, is just him circling the same points over and over again. It should be 10 min review but YouTube pays him by ad watched and minute watched so it's as long as possible. He might have some good points to make, but it's honestly massively disrespectful of your time to publish as he does.

I like his reviews but succinct they are not. You are right, it's not respectful of anyones time - but that's the business model I guess.

I didn't realize how bad the reception of this game has been; I even heard some people comparing it to Halo.😬

Played it for a few more hours last night. Still cannot fathom the hate from some people this game has received (and really, an 8/10 is not a BAD game but the way the narrative has formed around this game you'd think it was the worst game ever) and I'm still loving it. It's a fucking Prime game. You get what you expect from it (which is all the more baffling to me why Shill up gave it a poor review for being too much like a Prime game)!

What the fuck?? This has got to be a new low. Nintendo fleecing all their idiot fans. Well deserved I guess, this is what you get when you lap up anything they shit out and call it gold. This game is $70?

There is an ambient track for the desert.

The amiibo only gives you the option to play tracks from other sections of the game. Like, say, the music that plays in the forest area etc. instead.

It doesn't add/unlock any new music.

I see people actually defending this in Facebook comments, calling it Nintendo hate. Fuck off, lmao.

A super standard feature and you either have to 100% the game for it or buy a piece of fucking plastic. Hilarious. Besides, once you've 100%ed this, drove your bike through that barren and boring ass desert a million times..... you mean to tell me you'll gladly drive around some more because you got music now?

Brrrrrrrrrrrrrruh!

What's next, fully finish a game to see the sky?

Did you finished the game?

Everything in that video is stuff I predicted months/years ago. Not surprised, just like after the 1st trailer of Starfield and that wannabe Starcraft would be nothing games. These things are obvious. I didn't know they'd go as low as removing music and selling it back to people, they are always innovative somehow.

quasimodo over here

While the companions annoy me, they just destroy the mood. The desert is baffling. I would have even preferred a small hub room that you can just teleport to the various locations than this. Would have at least sorted out the pacing. Had the same issue with Ragnarok and the deliberate slow sections to pad out the game. If they removed the desert it would be a 9/10 even with Miles.

I don't mind the companions, maybe now that I'm out to get the stuff I need by my own choosing it'll open up. so far very linear which is what Dread suffered from.

I don't mind the desert either.

I do miss the lore. MP1/2 and I think 3 had lore you can scan and learn more about the civilisation and things that happened, here so far there's none of that.

This is CoD level of linearity compared to Dread...
Also you can see too much of the backtracking I think, It's like I know that I need to go back to lots of areas for upgrades. I think in the previous games it wasn't as obvious or you could already get it if you're there and notice.

I was able to put a few hours in last night after work. Overall, I like it, but unfortunately, as expected, it went more toward the style of MP3 instead of MP1 in terms of overall game design. Areas are a bit too linear and none of them are interconnected between each other. Instead of having your ship to travel to these different biomes, you ride the bike.

Miles is annoying, but nowhere near as bad as a lot of people are making him out to be, and also as expected, this is the least of the games issues. I still enjoyed MP3, but the overly linear level design of (MP3 and) MP4 is the biggest thing holding this game back from being at that elite MP1 level. Boss battles, music, graphics, controls, have all been very good so far. Looking forward to playing more later.

Uh oh....

Wow... well this is interesting: I'm about halfway through this video and it's basically identical to my LTTP of Metroid Prime Remastered where I was ratio'd to hell and back :messenger_grinning_sweat: His primary complaint is that MP4 hasn't really evolved past MP, and as such doesn't hold up anymore in a landscape that has changed and improved dramatically in the intervening decades, and this was exactly my take on MP. It doesn't hold up - it's nostalgia. I feel fully vindicated.

i won breaking bad GIF

Ass Creed 2 doesn't hold up either. It's nostalgia.

Playing the game and I love it.

Tried 120fps on the Switch 2 but I couldn't see any difference with 60fps. The screen is too blurry when the camera moves to see any improvement.

His reviews are extremely hit or miss. Extremely. Like 10/10 or 0/10 for matching what I think.
They're entertaining and well produced. But yeah, hit or miss is accurate.

I don't like criticism that focuses on user error. Sometimes you gotta admit you fucked up and not hold it against the game.

Do the levels ever start requiring more exploration and branching paths?
So far the game is very basic combat, linear paths, bad characters and a bland story.

Very disappointing so far. I thought I would be dropped into a world and have to explore where to go. Not follow the straight path.

I've only ever played Super Metroid on SFM and I thought that if I had that game as a kid I'd have been lost in it as it was way better than the games I played back in the 16-bit era. I only saw one bit of someone streaming this new Metroid game. It was Samus on a bike but the road was very bland and grey and there was the occasional stack of three grey boxes.

Once you get the bike you can choose where to go.
I just completed the third area and I am pretty sure the game is 100% linear since it kind of funnels you to the next mandatory upgrade

Kind of classic Metroid design.....but game areas FEEL way more "obviously" linear that Prime 1 and 2 with an obvious start and kind of end. More like "levels" than areas.

I think the game is good - but not great.

The art style, graphics, control feels and music is all top notch. The music even has a unique take with some guitar and drums which I really enjoy

There are some weird misses though like the bike tutorial part (like wtf?!) and the character dialogue (would 100% be better just with them cut out)

If it holds up this will be below Prime 1 and Prime 2 but better than Prime 3 at least

The bike training stuff was... ugh... wish this thing wasn't in the game. Just wish it was interconnected somehow or flying between areas in her gunship (just short atmospheric flying sections, occasional air battles maybe). The bike is just so out of place imo and the desert as well. It's so uninteresting, flat and archaic. Looks and feels like a different game and I think MP4 would be better without it because everytime I go througj it, I just think "why?" As I drive by one of those ugly brown, broken buildings.

After watching the boss fight spoilers on youtube. Gonna still say this game has the strongest final boss in Metroid above Raven Beak, Mother Brain, and even Dark Samus.
