Vince Zampella, video game developer behind ‘Call of Duty' franchise, killed in crash

This is horrible news on multiple levels.

Vince and his games gifted me many precious memories and Titanfall 2 brought back my love for FPS games.

This is a bit of a personal loss, ngl.

RIP, king.
Same, I loved the Titanfall games when I was otherwise burnt out on FPS. And the Jedi games when I thought I was done with Star Wars.

He was an absolute pioneer in the industry who brought first-person shooters to new heights, with Medal of Honor and Call of Duty and Titan Fall, and recently by taking over the Battlefield IP. I always felt a project was in good hands when he was on board.

The fact that Battlefield 6 achieved the strongest performance in franchise history with not only the fastest selling, but the best selling is a testament to his deep understanding of the genre. I always felt hearing he would be the one to take over the BF IP after 2042, that he was the only person that could really, really bring that IP back

He will be greatly missed. R.I.P to the FPS G.O.A.T

We lost a fucking legend...

He singlehandedly revived battlefield this year. I was done with mp shooters in general. What an amazing visionary we didn't appreciate when he was alive. His track record is full of games that have reinvigorated if not revolutionized the genres. May he rest in peace.

Wow

I will never understand speeding. And speeding out of a tunnel into bright lights. Probably blinded himself. Cars are so fucking dangerous
Same. Maybe because I'm a Dad. I literally drive the limit at all times using cruise control and the space between vehicles features when on highways. Maybe because I never cared about cars. I always just looked at them as something that gets me from A to B. We currently have a nice three row minivan and a truck to haul the boat.

9 months ago, Vince was introduced to the car-lover YouTube audience as "Emelia's nice friend who let her try out his 6.9M Pagani Huayra".

It really messed me up to see Vince's daughter show up later on in the video. Poor family.

Using someone's death to pat yourself on the back, the hallmark of a great person.
Come on, that is taking it too far. I am not trying to boost my own ego here. I just had a reaction to watching the video.

We don't have all the information yet either, I'm not sure if it's confirmed he was the driver, or if that video is releated at all.

I have been inches away of getting hit by a car that drove like that, so I always get strong reactions to speeders. Like many do, which is why you see so many different reactions to the video.

Genuine legend of the industry.

I've pretty much played and loved all his notable work and the games he lead were so varied. Not a one trick pony.

Definitely the best mind in the FPS genre, for me at least. RIP.

Have to say though, I don't take joy in badmouthing the dead but that driving seems completely reckless and it's lucky more weren't killed. I wish there'd been a different outcome and it sucks he died, but man, his poor children.

You seen to think I'm defending his driving. I am not, i'm arguing with your "suicidal" angle.
My buddy once told me that death by car crash because of speeding is like dying from an overdose. You don't intend on the "high" to kill you. You only think about reaching that "high" again.

What in the actual fuck !!!! . he is my favorite guy in the video game industry. a legend who created Call of Duty and rebooted Battlefield 6.

fk man, I am really sad and pissed off.

RIP legend. you wont be forgotten :(

Damn, RIP. Thank you for some legendary games and some of the best singleplayer and multiplayer FPS of all time (specifically COD4/MW2, Titanfall2 for me).

Here's some of his car collection.

Shame about his basic bitch taste in cars. At least he owned McLarens

Rip, but after seeing that other video...

What a poorly signposted curve! In a sunny day you can easily get disoriented, and probably at night you probably couldn't see jack shit until you are at the apex.

There's simply no speed reduction or caution sharp turn ahead signpost.

There should be at least a speed reduction signs and those ground grooves that serve as an audible warning when you are approaching a dangerous zone.
I've read some explanations that the road and the tunnel are from the first half of the last century and the cars were much slower back then. They still could improve a lot. Like I said, metal barriers to collect the car, but also harsher speed limit, multiple warning sings, maybe a speed bump to force the drivers to slow down. Not leaving it like that for decades.

A little ironic the blinding HDR is Battlefield 6 has killed me many times..

lol its just a silly effect that is present even when you turn off HDR. (i tried this. something to do with their engine not handling lighting coming in an out of interiors. it was so much worse in the beta)

It's California, the reflection of the setting sun off the sign warning you about a fucking 90 degree turn on the immediate exit from the tunnel messed with the mating habit of a slug drawing them to the road to be run over.

The metal barriers for safety would have blocked a historic migration path for mountain goats and thus couldn't be built.

Yeah. I was reading comments on Instagram from the guy who posted and filmed the video. He was irate that the ex military pilots took an additional 20 minutes to land because of bullshit California safety protocols due to the car fire.

He said the passenger was conscious and talking on the side of the ride while he was waiting to be picked up.

Wtf...saw the video and...he was still strapped and them dragging him like that...wtf it's always such a miserable experience to watch someone's last moments.

RIP.

Edit: I know it's never a good time for a tragedy like this but right with Christmas around the corner. A time for family and unity...fuck this.

I know he will be remembered for Co-creating CoD, the activision split, and creating respawn, but the way he brought back Battlefield this year has to be a blueprint of how to listen to the longtime franchise fans while giving Devs freedom to explore new ideas. No MP game will ever please everyone, but the way he listened to fans and gave us exactly what we wanted out of a modern shooter is so fucking rare in an age where everyone is chasing fortnite dollars. To have a CoD guy understand what makes Battlefield special is absolutely shocking when DICE itself had lost its way.

I hope CoD developers, Bungie, 343i and even single player developers watch and study how managed to not only bring BF back but top CoD from the best selling list for just the third time in the last 17 years. You have to start with what players want, and then innovate from there. How he managed to stave off EA execs is beyond me, but it proves to me that good strong creative leads can make a stand against greedy CEOs and put players and the vision of developers first. We truly lost a great one day. A man who stood up to the big bad EA machine and did it for the gamers. Let's hope others follow his lead.

Maaaan, what a horrible way to die and at 55, damn. Irreplaceable loss for the family and gaming industry. RIP, Vince and everyone else who also died cuz of this car crash.

yeah, that tunnel needs a lot of signs posted everywhere warning of this sharp turn. it needs a max 25 mph limit as well as some flashing signs and proper guarrails instead of that retarded brick wall.

the local government really fucked up here. this accident was 10 years ago. if only they had acted after this accident.
In that older video it seems like he sped up specifically just for the tunnel section and likely knew the stretch of road, just miscalculated his ability to control his car at speed.
My guess it is the same case sadly for Zampella given there were people at the exit filming specifically for cars exiting the tunnel.

yeah definitely driver error, but signs are posted for a reason. the guard railing should definitely have been updated. the brick ones there are not going to absorb any collisions.

When you see someone who can turn around any project he joins, it's not going to be so easy to replace him.

Knowing everything gives cancer in California I'm guessing there are plenty of signs before entering the tunnel.

That video is so harrowing. It really shocks me to the core how someone - in this case a legend - can be gone in just a few seconds after being totally alive and ready for the next three or four decades.

I think that's the passenger.

Isn't there a way to 'fix' this?

Like can they possibly extend the tunnel cover forward, close to around the bend so it avoids opening directly into sunlight at all times of the day?
There could definitely be signage at least that it's opening up to a sharp corner from low visibility.

Or maybe people can just follow posted speed limits which are there for a reason?

Vince was the GOAT. For his swan song he did what a few months ago would have been considered absolutely insane and impossible, and that's take Battlefield, off of freakin' 2042 to a sales win over COD. Been playing the dude's games since MOHAA. Just the fact that Highguard is being made by people who had worked under him means I'm going to give it a chance despite the Concord vibes.
