Vince Zampella, video game developer behind ‘Call of Duty' franchise, killed in crash

Knowing everything gives cancer in California I'm guessing there are plenty of signs before entering the tunnel.
One of the other videos posted here with a vehicles crashing off the mountain shows much more including a lot of the winding road up to the two tunnels. The only signage at all are the max height sides on the tunnels themselves. Absolutely nothing else which is insane.

The guy that filmed the video which is on Instagram said the passenger was ejected and was conscious and talking and later died I think from bleeding out as per his comments. He said his name was Zach.

And he did have his seatbelt on but the entire seat bucket was also ejected. They dragged him to safety away from the burning car, bucket and all.
Welp :(

Isn't there a way to 'fix' this?

Like can they possibly extend the tunnel cover forward, close to around the bend so it avoids opening directly into sunlight at all times of the day?

You just need to signalize inside the tunnel with 4 traffic signs "caution sharp/dangerous curve ahead" at 200m then a "150m / 100m/ 50m" plus matching asphalt grooves (edit. Rumble strip) in a 4-3-2-1 pattern. (Or whatever feet's you guys use for that)

The thing is so common in mountain ranges road anywhere on the globe and cost next to nothing.

The passenger was a guy called Zack, he was alive for almost an hour, and apparently they talked to him. If I had to guess, he was some friend who wanted to join the speedracing "event" they were doing.

There was a motorcycle that showed up right after the crash, I wonder if that was civilian traffic or if he was part of the "event".

There could definitely be signage at least that it's opening up to a sharp corner from low visibility.
Can only help so much. There is an exit ramp on my commute with yellow black chevron sign indicating its a tight turn - about a year ago start taking the turn and there is a car facing the wrong way, actually up on the concrete barrier, had obviously taken the turn too fast and lost control. They add flashing yellow lights to the chevron signs. Cut to a few days ago - almost identical crash in the exact same location.

Found one

That's crazy. That's not the same section of the crash, but even that snippet is two small tunnels and zero signs there's a big turn.

Does that entire stretch of thin roads, tunnels and bends have any signs?

I didn't see any in this video. Note that driver posted the video, so he survived rolling off the mountain.

Edit: Rewatching it again I did notice a sign for a split second, but it's that zig zag straight line for a curving road. Nothing signifying the sharp turn that's there.

Jesus I saw the vid. It's still sad but come on man. You were 55, rich as fuck with a family and fulfilling career. You could have spent the next 20 years relaxing living the life. Wasted it to go fast in a car for 10 seconds.

If folks were standing there to record, it seems like they were expecting him to speed out of the tunnel. No signage will stop them from doing this.

Either way, RIP. Any letter from Activision yet?

He just saved Battlefield and now this. Way too soon, man. Rest in peace.
BF6 is pretty remarkable in this day of age of bad shooters. What else happened in this crash?

Video game icon Vince Zampella died at 55 in a fiery, single-car crash on Southern California's Angeles Crest Highway on December 21, 2025, where his Ferrari veered off the road, hit a concrete barrier, and caught fire, trapping him while a passenger was ejected, with both victims succumbing to injuries. The California Highway Patrol is investigating the unknown cause of the crash, which occurred around 12:45 p.m

Still no cause, certainly questioning the car, weather etc.

I know is a tragedy.. but the Guy was rich enough to rent any pro track and go speed away in peace and safety.... stupid death just like Paul Walker

Just saw the video of the crash. What an absolute shame. I've been a huge fan of his and his team since their Medal of Honor entry. I stand by my belief that Call of Duty died with the real Infinity Ward when he and Jason West left the company, and took many of their loyal and talented developers with them following the release of Modern Warfare 2. The quality dropoff in the series following that change up is monumental. That game is one of the last bastions of what I feel is the soul of old world game development. Tragic to see his life cut short like this by poor judgement behind the wheel. Also shame about the passenger, it's not fair when a driver kills others.

Only knew him from COD and TF, but his Wiki shows he worked at several places and seems to had started in gaming from the grassroots.

Crazy. Never knew COD came about at Activision because EA decided to make MoH in-house.

Early career

Following his "unsuccessful" enrollment at Broward College,[5] Zampella worked as a handyman. A friend of his helped him get a job at a local game company, where he answered phones and tested new releases. In a 1997 interview with Gamezilla, Zampella said he "started out in graphic design and digital video at GameTek, then went to Atari to help launch its PC division" sometime prior to 1997.[6] Zampella also worked at Panasonic Interactive Media/Ripcord Games and SegaSoft, where he met Jason West, whom he would later pair with to found Infinity Ward along with Grant Collier.[5][7]

In September 1999, Zampella moved from Silicon Valley to work for 2015 Inc. in Tulsa, Oklahoma.[8] By 2001, he was director of development of 2015 Inc.[9] He worked there through 2002, during which he was credited as the lead designer for the critically acclaimed Medal of Honor: Allied Assault.[10] After Allied Assault's success, Zampella continued on further Medal of Honor work.[3]

Infinity Ward

Shortly after Infinity Ward's creation, Electronic Arts decided to move Medal of Honor development in-house, and Infinity Ward took a deal with Activision to create a new game, codenamed "MOH Killer".[11] "MOH Killer" became Call of Duty, and Activision acquired Infinity Ward shortly after the game's release. At the same time, Zampella and fellow IW employee Jason West signed long-term employment contracts with Activision.[12] Under Zampella's and West's leadership, Infinity Ward released Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.[citation needed]

Famous one in Seattle,

Famous one in Seattle,

I've taken this exit myself several times to enter Seattle from I-5 traveling north. There are like 30 signs plastered everywhere with flashing yellow lights saying "SHARP TURN AHEAD" and "SPEED LIMIT LOWER THAN WHATEVER THE HELL YOU'RE DOING" and people just ignore every sign and fly down the exit and slam on their brakes and there's tire screeching noises as they barely avoid slamming into the concrete wall

It's a very notorious off-ramp and because it's in the middle of the city exiting from a section of I-5 that runs under surface streets there is no way to change the exit design and they have just kept adding more and more signs and flashing lights over the years but people keep right on crashing

You can't make humans look at signs which is why there isn't really any point to adding more signs to the Angeles Crest Highway and it's not like California will do anything anyways when that state can't even maintain existing infrastructure much less consider adding to it

Even if you have signs, people ignore them. People generally know that speed signs are understated and you can go faster. There's off ramps turns with 30 km/hr signs on highways here. You can go double that no problem.

Best way IMO to actually cap people speeding on off ramps are rumble strips. It wakes you up with the rumble, and who knows how fast you can actually drives on those until it ruins your tires. Maybe they are totally safe going fast on them, but I always slow down when I drive over them.

This is AI I'm assuming? Why would a literal gaggle of people be walking and filming a random spot of a desolate highway in the middle of a work day?

AI really is making people dumb as shit.

Most people dont work on Sundays.
The road is a hotspot for bikers and car enthusiasts to blast their cars.
Car/Bike spotting is like a whole genre of Youtube videos.
If you got nothing better to do on a Sunday why not go see some fast cars/bikes.

Damn rip .

But this smells like dangerous driving. Single car on a scenic road? Car caught on fire? Passenger ejected?

Probably going 100 on a 30.
Steve Bannon Bingo GIF

Tragic but I have little sympathy for people that speed like crazy (if that was true). Best case scenario you kill only yourself, worst case you kill someone else as well.

Speeding is dangerous as heck and that road seems dangerous as well. Especially considering the amount of incidents reported on it. Honestly a little blame lies on the state government as well. They should have acted earlier to make the road less dangerous.

At the end though, rip dude. Can't even imagine what the kids are feeling and so close to the holidays as well.

Rest in peace!

Great loss for gaming. Making impactful FPS games over the last 20 years is quite a huge achievement. Really sad to see him leaving us in a such a stupid way.

I think 11 foot 8 proves there's nothing you can do to prevent drivers from being stupid.

This hurts.

OG MW1-3 were my legit my favorite and most played games on 360. I remember the the countless hours of multiplayer fun, MW2 especially. Getting that tactical nuke in online MP and the hours spent playing Spec Ops with friends, trying to beat every mission on top difficulty, then trying to beat our times.

Then on PS4 Titanfall 2 was one of my favorite and most played games.

Then Apex Legends became my most played game on PS4 and PS5 which I still play daily with friends.

And he recently took over the BF franchise and BF6 has been a ton of fun so far, I'm also playing that pretty much daily.

This man has really contributed a ton our hobby. RIP to a legend.

And just saw the real video. To complete the package there`s a fricking stone barrier incontiguous with the tunnel, less than a meter of the road. One mistake to the right you get impaled basically by a huge stone, one wrong move to the left and you fall off a cliff.

Of course he was flooring it but this road is a clusterfuck.

Both points are valid - however I would say willingly speeding because "you can do it here" speaks a lot about how you approach road safety. I don't speed - I know if I do I will arrive maybe 5-10 minutes later with a lot more stress. It's just not worth it. It's kinda like people accelerating to get past a single block- why? You need to stop in 300m anyway, what's the point?

Rumble strips are good, and your point is excellent - I would say all the small dicks driving sport cars would be scared as hell to damage their suspension, which is what would make them slow down. They don't care otherwise.

I really just read the title and went to the current replies, just assumed it took place today considering we heard about it today, and the video appeared to be uploaded today. If kpopsuperstar's details are accurate, it seems it was some kind of street race or hot rod event as I postulated, not just a group of random yokles who happened to capture a 1 in 10 trillion crash of a celebrity of note in this specific 50 square foot area of planet earth at this specific time. Those odds would be like 10 power ball wins in a row.

Well, sure as hell didn't expect this waking up today. Wtf, damn man, RIP.

Fucking legend with all the games on his development list.

A little too much finger pointing about the reckless driving here. You've all done something spectacularly stupid at some point and none of you would deserve a bunch of posts pointing out you were being dumb before your body was even cold. Are we all this desensitized at this point?

I think this would be a more reasonable position if Zampella was 25 and not 55. Crazy irresponsible. What a sad, senseless loss. He has to easily be one of the greatest and most influential game developers of all time.

No it's perfectly reasonable at any age good lord. But props on never fucking up from 26 through the rest of your life. If only Vince could have been as perfect!
