Star Citizen Dev Says Squadron 42 Is Now Fully Playable, Is Over 40 Hours in Length, and Is Still on Track for 2026 Release Date

Founder and CEO Chris Roberts wrote in a blog post that CIG is focusing on quality and polish as it moves toward an internal beta milestone and, eventually, a full release for Squadron 42 at some point next year.

"We're confident in the direction the game is headed and are fully focused on delivering," Roberts said. "We know many of you are eager to play, and we're looking forward to putting it in your hands. We don't plan on a long, drawn-out marketing campaign as we've already done our share of trailers and gameplay previews. When it's time, you (and the rest of the gaming world) will hear a lot more from us."

He continued: "a big part of what makes this possible is the technology we've built at CIG over many years. The ability to move seamlessly from on foot, into a vehicle you can fly and move around inside, down to a planet or across star systems, all without loading screens, creates a level of immersion that's very difficult to replicate. That combination of close-up interaction and galactic scale is at the core of what will make Squadron 42 so unique.

still on track, still awaiting rug pull.
Still don't understand the morons thinking this is a scam. Whether you agree or not on it being mismanaged is another matter. Their taxes are publicly filed because the company is technically based in the UK. You can see where their funds go and cost of operation.

Not sure how you do a rug pull with almost 1k employees.

That's quite the assumption.

I backed this, uh, I think back in 2012. Still excited to see what happens, good or bad. And I don't think it's a scam, just poorly managed.

The rug pull was more for pushing the release date outside of 2026. I mean, I think that's a reasonable take after everything that this project has gone through, don't you?

The posts that defend the scam are as equally as entertaining as the threads.

It is known as a PC game , but there are rumors and talks about consoles Release
If anything it would be PS6 / Magnus. I can't see this game running evenly moderately well on current consoles (and lol for XSS).

It will be 14 years or so since the Kickstarter if this releases next year. I have some doubts about that release though. But we shall see.

I think PS5 pro and Series X can run the singleplayer maybe with lowering some of the graphics settings , SQ42 is Not open world like Star citizen!

"Fully playable" but still in beta, so nowhere near "gold."

Absolutely nothing would make me believe anything Chris Roberts says at this point, including that SQ42 is releasing in 2026.

I backed this at the beginning also because I wanted something that would push the nvidia 770.
I don't even have a computer anymore, other than my work Mac .

I'm thinking it'll get delayed to 2027, but isn't this like the 1ST Episode, of like 4 Episodes for the full game, or 3?
This is what I'm wondering. They basically doubled the length of the game to 40 hours but still haven't heard the plan if this is still a trilogy or they just combined all the content into this game.

Exactly, there are so far three planned episodes for this one, so you're only getting a third of the planned game at launch.

Kind of reminds me of StarCraft 2.

Anyway, it is good that somewhere along the line they reevaluated the scope of the project so something.. anything can actually ship. But I don't think a lot of people are aware that this is a trilogy of games, not one game.

PS5 Pro is probably less than 10% of current PS5 consoles. And XSX has XSS parity.

So maybe a temp PS5 exclusive is possible, but it is likelier that it won't come out for consoles until next gen launch.

They originally referred to the two extra episodes as "Missions Disks" just like the expansions for the original Wing Commander.

There's certainly a lot more work for all the cinematics versus what was needed back in the 90s. We'll see how long they take to come out.

That said 40 hours for the first campaign is kinda insane. Most of the Wing Commander games were 10-12 hours with 3 being the longest at over 20 if you did the side content. 40 hours puts it around the length of the fully expanded X-Wing or TIE Fighter games of the main games with the two expansions for each one.

Some of the devs just put out a preliminary initial VR support to the game. For how much Star Wars Squadrons was a dream come true in VR feeling like X-Wing or Wing Commander in VR. I'm really hoping this is able to take things to the next level.
