Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

MGS3 looks amazing but i wanted to ask if you guys think this is worthy of a 3 generation leap.

How do you get that from my post?

What i say is that at 4k, maxed out, the game in my oled tv never looked as pristine as those pics, and cyberpunk is the game where i notice the biggest discrepancy between pics and what i see with my eyes, it is super strange.
Ok, I see what you mean, I think I know why you say this. Sometimes I get this feeling too while I'm playing the game.

IMO it's a combination of these things, at least for me anyway:
- The UI which adds all sorts of ugly shit on the screen.
- Smearing and flickering from path tracing that makes the image unstable, we see this also with lumen on UE5.
- The general gameplay of the game, meaning the weird physics, objects floating and all sorts of stuff like this.
I would fucking love if i could play with the graphic of your pics but i can manage to get that on my setup, no matter how much money i throw at it :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

My hunch is that screenshot softwares add some sort of filter that perfect the image in some way or another.
I don't use screenshot software, I just open the photomode and use the Steam or Windows screenshot key. So I don't use the game's screenshot tool.

This way it adds nothing extra to the scene, it doesn't enhance it, maybe it's a bit higher resolution, but that's it, I have made tons of comparisons, I have one that shows this:

i think massive made two gorgeous looking ultimately hollow games that flopped because they simply didnt get the gameplay right. say what you will about ubisoft games, but they all had solid gameplay. same cant be said about avatar and outlaws. massive shouldve worked with ac devs to try and figure out the ubisoft formula before deciding to work on two single player open world games. Get a designer from the Splinter cell team to help with stealth, get someone from the AC and Far Cry teams to help add new skills that actually change the way you play the game, and hire some sony guys to do proper cutscenes and maybe it wouldve been a great game.

the thing is that while the gameplay had its issues at launch, a lot of the hate came earlier due to politics and other internet gamer outrage. these retards dont really play games. they dont care about graphics, gameplay, or the fact that this was a single player game that was greenlit in an era where everyone was going GaaS. they decided this was the next game to target and make some quick bucks while farming engagement.

i can understand the complaints but i cant stand the outrage and the boycotts. the KCD2 thread on the first page is basically the same. i get it. henry wasnt gay in the first game, and fans feel betrayed but its fucking optional and the game is fantastic otherwise. on era just yesterday, this dude was upset at everyone for outlaws flopping, then said that he didnt play the game at launch and only got it 6 months ago. well, fuck you, you are the problem. games live and die based on the initial sales. it flopped because you didnt give it a chance and now we will never get a sequel.
Yeah, the hate or criticism due to politics or other nonsense bores the hell out of me, it needs to be ignored to just die and let these people yell at the wall, they're a minority and have real brain issues.

But besides all that crap, the game had broken as hell stuff at launch; I couldn't play it. I wanted to like it, but it doesn't matter if it's gorgeous, or it's SW, it is what it is. Maybe it's better now. I'll try it again one day.
90% of twitter is full of people talking about how graphics havent improved since batman arkham city. and yet none of these buffoons played outlaws. 90% of them only just started playing avatar two years after launch. i will never understand boycotting games for politics or reasons other than gameplay. hell, i play half of these games knowing the gameplay sucks just because i want to reward devs who went above and beyond with the graphics. i am brutal in my assessment of the game, but i make sure to buy them.
These people should also be ignored like the ones with agendas that don't have anything to do with a game. They don't know anything else, or worse, they know exactly what they're doing and thrive on just shitting on everything no matter the reason.
These people don't know the difference between art styles, geometry complexity, light bounce, etc. and yeah probably judge a game's visuals based on their platform preference or just a screenshot from a game, that screen being the worst the game can look.

That should be maximum two. But we know how the development of computer chips power slowed down the last 20 years. Every year it gets worse. Man do I miss the phase of the mid 90s to the mid 00s. The change/growth in power was HUGE. 3 generation changes during that time, where each new one made the last one look so incredibly obsolete...these times will never return...

I think its probably purposely done by big corps to prolong sales and generations, there is no way TLOU 2 can be done on 1.8 TFLOPs and 5 years into the new gen PC included barely any games completely blow it away. All engines are outdated except a handful, Corporations are greedy, Devs overworked and sometimes lazy, COVID delayed engines etc. Remember that real time NVIDIA cars demo that looked like it was the future that was supposed to release years ago? Where is it? Games have a LONG way to go at least 2 gens before perfect photo realism, The Matrix Awakens demo and Hellblade 2 already look photo realistic in some cutscenes...

I do get your point. I think we should add, that the hardware is simply not quite there as well. A 5090 will do the job, sure, but it alone costs 2K+ now, maybe 5K+ soon. Memory jump from PS4 to PS5 generation is laughable as well. PS6 gen will be the gen with a sizeable jump in memory over PS4, also the TF jump will be finally meaningful and the jump in raytracing/path tracing performance will be huge. Overall the PS6 will still be about 50% of what a high end 5090 class PC can do for years already.
All in all I think PS6 will be capable of having Matrix demo class open world games, but the PS7 gen will be the first console gen where Matrix demo class visuals at crisp resolutions and high framerates will be standard, and it will also be only about twice as ad powerful as a 5090 class high end PC. Mark my words and quote me on that in 10 years time, that's how sure I am fam.

In my case it's nothing of what you listed unfortunately.

This is bit off topic although related to what you are saying but do you use glasses? I actually got ones like a year ago and its like seeing in HD when looking at a screen. I thought my eyesight was completely fine but when I tried the glasses it's like having 4k vision. Games and textures look so much sharper and detailed. Its crazy because there are some details that I can't even perceive without them.

Just keep this in mind too now that you got a 4k TV

Nope i have 14\10 sight, a couple more and i could see through walls.

Yeah, then maybe it's just something like what you prioritise when judging visuals.
I'm more of lighting guy, I know you put more emphasis on textures, if I'm not mistaken.

Or something else, I'm not judging or anything.

I said that while CP has amazing highs for me, it also has some crap lows, that's why I think AC Shadows overall maybe has it beaten.

Maybe we don't understand each other, i LIKE what i see in the pics, my game just never look that good.

What hardware you got?
Settings?
My 4090 with max settings definitly looks that good. (Based on screenshots in this thread)
Could be washed out tv settings or wrong tv calibration?
Im on a Plasma.

Honestly, if hellblade 2 can look photorealistic then MGS3 shouldve looked the same seeing as how they are both incredibly linear games with very narrow levels.

I am really curious to see how Marvel 1943 turns out. thats the only game that is rivaling hellblade 2 and the matrix in terms of photorealism. Death Stranding 2 is close in cutscenes but i dont count that when the game looks nothing like that during gameplay.

Enough hardware to max out the game and the best oled of 2025 as far as accuracy.

It's a mistery.

Looks like Eidos Montreal is still alive and has been working on an AAAA game built on UE5. Guardians of the Galaxy was a great looking game, but it seems like they are yet another studio thats ditched their own custom engine for UE5.

A LinkedIn profile from an Edios Montreal employee has revealed that the studio is working on an unannounced 'AAAA' game in Unreal Engine 5.

The finding was posted by LinkedIn scouter Timur222 on X, and corroborates what I have heard about the project.

In December 2025, I posted to X that recent Eidos Montreal layoffs were connected to a project codenamed P11, which has been reducing its headcount as of late as it heads into Beta and eventually, launch.

P11 is Eidos Montreal's new IP, which, according to sources, has been in development since around 2019 and has faced significant setbacks and issues along the way. It's understood that the project has seen hundreds of millions of dollars invested, which, unsurprisingly, would warrant the 'AAAA' tag.

As mentioned on the Insider Gaming podcast, the game is an open-world action-adventure game in third-person.

Their Deus Ex games are some of my favorites of their generations. GotG was gorgeous but severely lacking on the gameplay front. Calling a project "AAAA" sounds like the kiss of death but who knows, maybe they still have something good in them. At least they're not solely a support studio now, like had been reported a while back.

The more I play Metal Eden, honestly the more I see that it basically does a couple things really well (color/reflective surfaces/lighting), but then makes the smart decision of just leaning really heavily on those things to make the most of it. Super fun and gorgeous little 6-7 hour AA FPS. I recommend it.

I swear it didn't look this good when I played it.

TLOU II had 2-3x the budget of the average AAA game.

TLOU II was worked on by the cream of artists, animators and tech developers with massive help from the ICE group.

TLOU II targeted 1080p/30fps on PS4. Most modern AAA games target 1080p-1440p/60fps with a 1440p-4k/30fps mode on PS5. This is a huge thing most people don't talk about. You need 3-4x the computer power to do 1440p/60fps instead of 1080p/30fps in the same game never mind adding any visual improvements on top of that. The console generational hardware leap just wasn't nearly enough to do the above AND have a generational leap in visuals on top. If ND got the same budget as TLOU II and made a PS5 game targeting 1080p/30fps it would melt faces.

TLOU II is a very linear game with one main open area. Massive visual / animation polish because of much fewer assets versus an open World game with 50 hours of extra side content.

Comparing TLOU II or RDR II to other games is comparing apples to oranges. There are many, many impressive PS5/SeriesX games both in terms of visuals and tech.

Don't like the colours, I much prefer the vanilla ones but man Rockstar's games are just something else in terms of exploration. I've probably put more hours just roaming around RDR2 and GTA V these past 10 or 15 years than almost all the other games I've played combined.
There's just something about their worlds that make it extremely soothing to just explore and observe what's happening around the player character.

Skyrim, The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 also deserve some praise imo but still, Rockstar reigns supreme...
Perhaps I'm setting myself up for disappointment but after RDR2 and its NPC and animal tech I'm so fucking excited to explore Vice City.

Yeah, Metal Eden looks fantastic. I had to turn on Lumen Reflections and Enhanced Lighting for it to look this good, but its really not that heavy. I went from maybe 60% GPU usage to 70%. I did notice i was getting a few UE5 stutters after enabling these two settings but they are relatively rare. Game was built on UE5.3 so they are missing the CPU efficiency upgrades.

Game has these fantastic reflections and really nice looking materials, but its basically a very linear ghostrunner type of game with no horizontal levels per se. I dont mind linear games, but this is basically a narrow corridor you run through until you get to a smallish arena and have a fight there. The world doesnt really feel that organic because of this. If we had this level of detail in a wider environment, it would be much more impressive.

Still, the combat is a lot of fun. And the cutscenes are really well done. Lovely lighting, and volumetric effects. Straight up CG at times. They are not realtime, but definitely feel inengine. Gorgeous.

Edit: Took some gifs, but just like with Wuchang, the gifs dont come out all that well. The detail causes shimmering and the colors just dont get retained in gif form. The screenshots are definitely the best way to showcase modern UE5 games.

Yeah is really is just Ghostrunner x nuDoom. So no issues with noisy reflections? Guess it must have been fixed in a patch since lumen was not usable at launch.

Agreed, I'm guessing it was tone mapped some sort of violet colour or something, either way I'm not impressed

Live looks much better, at least when i played it.

The game was my first holy shit moment after forbidden west where i thought i was finally playing a nextgen game.
