IGN 5/10
Return to Silent Hill isn't the worst entry in this video game movie series, but it fails to accomplish anything that the source material doesn't do better.

Seattle Times 5/10
It doesn't hold a candle to the game, but there's enough here to warrant another visit to this tragic little town.

The Guardian 4/10
20 years later Gans still can't figure out how to escape the open-ended confinement of gameplay, or even give it the forward momentum of a game with a mission.

Collider 3/10
With bad direction, terrible acting, and a world that has no weight behind it (especially since most of it was clearly made in a computer), this isn't the way to bring Silent Hill 2 to the big screen. This powerful survival horror story has been turned into an ugly, laughable adaptation that proves that maybe we should've never gone back to Silent Hill.

Total Film 3/10
Loosely based on the 2001 game Silent Hill 2, Return to Silent Hill can be an atmospheric horror film with original creature designs worthy of Konami's legendary franchise. But a confusing plot, mediocre visual effects, and over-the-top acting might make director Christophe Gans' newest Silent Hill adaptation just as divisive as his first attempt 20 years ago.

Slant Magazine 1/10
Christophe Gans's film does away with all the psychosexual nuance of Silent Hill 2.

Not surprising lol

Not surprised at all.

The story in 2 is so damn good and a film faithful to the game with the right team could be amazing. But of course that wasn't happening here, lol. I've read a few spoilers I've seen, and yeah, the way things pan out all sound about right, lol. Especially with how he did the first film.

That being said, the first film was still one of the better video game films, especially at the time. But it was by no means perfect. This just feels and looks worse across the board. The budget, the distribution, the marketing. It all feels like they didn't really care, they just decided to whip it up and throw it out there without any effort, lol.

The original Silent Hill movie is unironically one of the best videogame adaptations.
It's not Arcane good or even Super Mario Bros. movie good, but it's a hell of a lot better than detritus like Doom or the Fallout show.
And since I stopped caring about what bought-out bitches masquerading as journalists thought of any given production, I'll confirm it myself if the sequel sinks or swims.

YOU DON'T FUCKIN SAY!!!

This has been one of the most absurdly shit looking movies in previews I've seen in ages. Costumes straight out of the Spirit Halloween store.

I hope the box office will cover the cost of that sikk Mustang.

A concise miniseries would probably be a good fit for a live action adaptation of the second game. It could take its time and not try and squeeze everything into an hour and a half runtime.

As to why it's so hard to make a good adaptation, maybe it has to do with the pride of the screenwriter and director. Maybe they can't deal with the fact that the story and presentation is already perfectly complete. They have to inject something of themselves into the project so it makes them feel better, like a petty form of accomplishment that they had a vision realized instead of actually making the film as it was intended.

They said the same thing about Tron Ares and other movies that were good... I'll go see it on Sunday and tell you what I think.

🧐.
IGN gave the Return to Silent Hill movie a 5 out of 10, and the problem isn't the rating.

Everyone knows IGN isn't a guarantee of whether something is good or bad.

The problem is that their main complaint is that the movie is too similar to the game and that they don't dare to change the story or come up with something new. XD

So, they want a bad adaptation of the game to be good?

We live in a simulation.

In this case? Lack of investment.
Which is a shame seeing as how the IP (on the game side) is seeing a bit of a resurgence.

To be fair, most people who have reviewed it so far agree it's a bad movie.

In my honest opinion, the best video game adaptation are the ones that don't try retelling same story…like how Cyberpunk Edgerunner.

Edgerunner expanding on existing world while having the freedom tell their own story.

10% on Rotten Tomatoes
Matthew Broderick GIF
Now at 6%

It's actually lower than the Silent Hill 3 movie (8%) now...

Being a fan doesn't mean much for comprehension sadly.
He's also the retard who changed the lead to a female lead for the first Silent Hill movie, because apparently, his words not mine: "A father won't go to such great lengths to save his child"

It must suck to be a director and release a movie you are proud of then have the critics just say its silly horseshit and it has like a 4 percent on rotten tomatoes lol

Don't care, still going to see it tomorrow

I don't really see how "it's not as good as the game" is a particularly good criticism tbh, and that's the road all the reviews seem to be going down

I found a letter that Marie wrote to James about the movie

"In my restless dreams,
I see that movie.

Return To Silent Hill.

You promised me you'd take me
to see it.
But you never did.

Well, I'm alone in the theatre now...
In our 'special seat'...
Waiting for you...so we can watch Return To Silent Hill

Waiting for you to
come see it with me.

But you never do.

And so I wait, wrapped in my
cocoon of pain and loneliness caused by the movie.

I know Christophe Gans has done another terrible
thing to the franchine. Something you'll
never forgive me for.

I wish I could change
that, but I can't.

I feel so pathetic and ugly
sitting here, watching the movie, waiting for you...but you never came"

Seeing Maria made me lose hope. This director was the wrong guy all along.
I have to disagree. The first one was really respectable transposition. But the trailer of the sequel already destroyed any hope of decency. I mean wtf why the characters have such teenagers look, James was a normal average man not a failed rich actor.

The first movie looked like the game, which was the most successful thing it did.

If it's scoring lower than Revelations, then it must be atrocious.

I had a bit more hope for this one given the director directed the first Silent Hill movie, which was actually OK for a videogame adaptation.

I'm really not a fan of the Alan Wake lookalike that they've got playing James, but that seems to be the least of it's issues.
