Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Honestly despite not being impressed with the reveal, the actual gameplay segments in this new trailer are giving me DriveClub vibes. The sense of speed is phenomenal and the game looks way better during gameplay than it does during cutscenes and those flyover shots.



Lots of neat visual effects, color grading gives it a very realistic look in some levels, and feels a lot less sterile than Forza Horizon 6.

ask yourself why they would announce a new game by interns starting development instead of announcing a game by Cory Barlog that started development 8 years ago.
Maybe corey game is not ready yet to be showed?

again you have to ask yourself, why would a game thats been in development since 2018 is still not ready to be shown? its in development hell or looks like shit and will be cancelled soon.

same goes for intergallactic. sony had the entire studio crunch for two months before christmas to get a gameplay demo done and they didnt even show it off? must have sucked even by sony standards. probably looking to cancel these games and are using remake announcements to soften the blow..

Agreed. It's a stacked year and they already have 2 lined up + the waves that GTA6 will be making. Probably see more at the end of the year if not early next. Maybe intergalactic won't look like a PS4 game next time.
 
Go off, king. Your rants about Sony first-party are one of the reasons I even bothered making an account on here.

You can almost pinpoint the exact moment when a lot of these mega studios got complacent and lost the plot. One of my favorite studios these days is Bloober. Bloober is hungry, man. Starving. Started out basically making shovelware, pivoted to artist-driven horror games and started cranking them out. In the last ten years: Layers of Fear, Observer, Layers 2, Blair Witch, The Medium, SH2, and Cronos. With at least two more currently in development. Yeah they were making walking sims at first but at least they were gorgeous and helped them build up a fantastic art pipeline while slowly expanding and getting more ambitious with gameplay. Observer had more going on than Layers, The Medium had more meat on its bones than Observer, etc. Almost all their games are at least good for what they are, and they eventually got to SH2 which is one of this gen's showpieces. Apparently they're only at 250 devs NOW and that's after slowly expanding over the years.

If I was a talented dev looking for work I'd want to be somewhere I could get games made and shipped at a steady pace instead of one or two a decade. I'm sure it does wonders for morale let alone keeping production pipelines humming along etc. If only AAA could stop betting the house on every single release.
Yep. Bloober is a great example of a hungry studio. Pearl Abyss is another. They couldve just made another MMO, but they went out of their way to make something insanely ambitious. The latest Silent Hill is made by a relatively new studio that made Observation with a very small studio. They couldve made another smaller title but took on Silent Hill. And it looks gorgeous! Not cross gen like Sony games this gen.

The Expedition 33 director was literally asking questions on reddit on how to use UE4 in 2020. He had just one other guy working with him until they finally started hiring people and within five years he made a GOTY title with a total of 33 devs. Cory has had access to 300 developers or a good chunk of those guys since 2018, and almost all of them since 2022 and nothing.

Some devs have that hunger. others have coasted on for far too long. Again, i keep saying this but when you have devs literally saying they are risk averse, that they didnt bother upgrading visuals because the jump from PS4 to PS5 isnt big enough, that they didnt even want to make a PS5 game because the PS4 let them achieve their vision, when you have these lazy ass unambitious devs at the helm, you are going to have these terrible conferences where you just dont have anything to show.

its happened before. Stig made GOW3 and moved to make a new IP that was cancelled after 4 years of dev time. he left the studio and went on to make Star Wars at respawn.

Factions was cancelled after 5 years of dev time. Bluepoint and bend just cancelled their games after 5 years of dev time as well. not exactly unprecedented.

Again, you dont reveal a game going into production when you are already in full production on another game you are planning to release in 2027 or 2028. if that game was so close to completion, the entire studio wouldve been working on it instead of starting development on a brand new game.

and of course im being pessimistic. what did you see at that show that made you optimistic about sony's efforts this gen lmao
with the looming shadow of GTAVI over the entire industry, Barlog's game has now clearly become a next-gen title.

They don't need any more new titles until the end of this gen. GTA VI will guarantee more sales until the end of the gen.
it would be unwise to compete with GTAVI in the same year or even the next [ especially given how much emphasis Sony tends to put on high metas and winning awards]

Ryan and Hulst messed up big time this gen; so far, the sales have all been driven by the brilliance and the success of PS4 not the management ( but the shareholders will idiotically attribute this success to Ryan and Hulst's performance )
Sony are now keeping their fingers crossed and hoping for a new chance with next gen
They're strengthening their next-gen line-up with Physint, Barlog's game, whatever Bend is up to,
and the GOW remake (motivated only by the TV series launching around the same time) and probably another Astro Bot
they were making cross gen games until 2022. why would they switch to ps6 exclusive just to sell PS6s? it will be cross gen at best. and thats if the ps6 comes out any time soon. the ram fiasco is going to impact launch, and availability even if sony rushes out a console by the end of 2027. my guess is 2028 at best, and we will be getting cross gen games until 2030. games already take 6-8 years to make. no one is designing games around a 35 tflops GPU right now. its all 10 tflops. we will be lucky to get a next gen only game by 2032.

they are delayed because they were mismanaged to oblivion. not because they wanted to target some high spec console. they dont have the imagination or the ambition to do that. let's face it. they are probably just making a ps3 era game with ps4 era visuals just like Yotei, DS2, Spiderman 2 and Astrobot.

The only saving grace of ds2 were the cutscene models that are ue5 metahumans, see it as an award to ue5 more than an award to ds2.

i dont disagree. these studios are LA based and have 300-400 devs working on one game since 2020 and 2022. They have probably put in $200-300 million into each game and at this point they cost too much to cancel.

Still not a good look to not see them after they specifically had people crunch for two months just for that demo.

At least yotei is pushing next gen draw distance. the only thing technical Death Stranding 2 is pushing is kojima's farts.


Death Stranding 2 shouldve won this. amazing soundtrack by Woodkid. better than the stellar Exp 33 soundtrack imo.

Draw distance? definitely. DS2 has no next gen tech. its a last gen game through and through. With cutscenes that look next gen because they just blast them with high quality lighting and shadows on close ups just like Rebirth.

I mean technically the models are ue5 metahumans and those are nextgen tech...

So i would still give the edge to ds2, rdr2 had impressive distance rendering on a ps4 so not exactly new tech...

They were the top dog since 2005, all GOW games were pushing the consoles heavily, all their games are in top 5 graphics for PS2/PS3/PS4.

This stopped being the case with PS5, so far they have no "PS5 only" project.

I was doing some free fanboy labor for Sony on system wars ~2009-2011, being a Sony fanboy in PS3 era was some real hardcore stuff compared to how easy it is now (pussies).

The most funny thing is - Xbox 360 fanboys were constantly posting sales charts while "we" were dropping lists of amazing exclusive games. Now, no one has fucking exclusives and Sony fanboys are using sales charts...

Nah, they give a lot of reasons, tlou2 fanboys just can't accept these reasons.

I watched my fair share of tlou2 topics dude.

I don't give a fuck about any story or characters from nd games because i find them boring and predictable with too much easy drama so i had no expectations for a good story but people who loved tlou1 didn't do a 180° just because the game was woke.
Tlou1 dlc was already a step into the wokeness and people didn't minded that one.

Those were the meme reasons. The real reasons were also pointed out, such as the usual video game disconnect where you kill 10,000 enemies yet spare the very last guy because 'revenge/killing is bad'. One would think that Naughty Dog would have learned to address this after the same complaint was made for Uncharted.

the character motivations. I have never been this detached with a protagonist's motivations since maybe Raiden in MGS2. Abby was given her own 12 hour campaign and none of the 'good' stuff she did had any effect on me. And thats ok. Some people are just irredeemable but dont make them your protagonist for half the game.

The worst part was Ellie's motivations in the so called epilogue. When she goes back and fights her one more time. Neil had completely lost me by then. it made no sense for her to go back AFTER Abby had already spared her and dina and her baby. I was checked out through out the whole Santa Barbara mission, and legit started hating the game when she forces her to fight and then forces me the player to kill her. I get what Neil was trying to do but you cannot write a story where the protagonist is behind the curve when it comes a crucial story moment like getting over your dad's death. The disconnect was too much for me, and well the vast majority of gamers. You can see it in the reaction videos of this game. The groans when you first switch to Abby's campaign. Everyone fucking hated it. That alone is a massive writing failure but he kept it going for another 12-15 hours. Again, you can see the reaction videos and how every single person let Ellie kill Abby in that boss fight in the theater.

Put it simply. neil failed as a writer.

The game was still my goty that year because i value gameplay elements like level design and combat a lot more than stories, and i still think the artists at that studio are top tier when it comes to facial animations and acting, but that was the first time where i was like wait, neil is a bad writer. The whole divorce/couple's counseling simulator plot in the third act of Uncharted 4 was also completely out of touch with the game, but it had elena and drake finally together so i was like alright at least there is some chemistry here. Abby had zero chemistry with anyone and Ellie was written like an angry bitch. One of the best new characters ever written and she was lobotomized into a vengeful bitch for a good 25 hours in the next game. Not good writing.
 
As far as I know, it wasn't exactly fake, they changed the render mid-development because of the consoles.

I have no doubt they would have had to scale back settings due to consoles but they couldn't match their original vision and trailer fidelity/density outside perhaps lighting, even with the current next-gen patched versions of the game on the PS5/Series X. They threw out a verticle slice they just couldnt send out in a playable form at the time.

i do like that they didnt repeat the same mistake with cybperunk. they targeted the 1080 with the first gameplay demo for Cyberpunk. It was 1080p 30 fps too. Then stuck to their guns and released a garbage looking game on the PS4 and X1. Probably shouldve never released last gen versions tbh.

Don't get me wrong, I entirely agree. as I said in my previous post, it was BECAUSE of the mismanagement that they now have to postpone Barlog's game to next-gen.

There has clearly been a rather drastic shift in their current-gen policy

I personally think that AI, the abortive attempt at AAA GaaS, ram shortages, and GTAVI have all further exacerbated the problem for Sony, causing them to skip this gen and focus on PS6 instead

Let's be honest,
Sony has already achieved all their fiscal goals.
also the GTAVI collaboration will be an absolute behemoth of a boost for their sales the next 2 years
AND
Barlog's game has been rumoured to be a horror game.
With the two upcoming SHs being reportedly planned for release as timed exclusives for PS5, PLUS RE9 also on the way,
there is really no shortage of horror games.
I believe they have pushed the game to next gen and have instead decided to diversify their next-gen line-up with Physint [action stealth], Barlog's [action or survival horror], another AstroBot and a few other titles

I will literally never understand takes like this. You really can't put yourself in the shoes of someone wanting to seek vengeance against the man who killed their unarmed father in cold blood?


The whole theme of the series, the first game included, is there's no simple "good guys" and "bad guys" in this story. There's "my people" and "their people" and everyone is just trying to survive. Joel was not a good man. He was a man who wanted to protect his own, at all costs. No different than Abby or Abby's father.

Dont you think releasing a next gen console and unnecessarily increasing their R&D costs by billions is going to reduce their profit margins? I dont see why they would want to do this unless they are expecting sales to bottom out soon which Im not sure is going to happen this time around. especially since the console is still $500 and GTA hasnt come out. And even if the sales drop, they will just look to increase the profit margins by releasing games to a bigger audience instead of limiting them to next gen only consoles.

I am expecting $700 consoles minimum since Sony would want each console to be profitable. But even if they can sell them by the millions, i dont think they will risk selling a brand new game or two to just 4-5 million users at launch. the company now puts profits over everything else. hell, they literally just increased the price of ps+ from $60 to 85 and are now saying they will look to increase it again because people kept subbing to the higher price. These guys are all about profits now.
 
let's see if Annapurna can outshine Bloober. this being a completely new game in the series, and first-person to boot , makes it a challenge for them

ask yourself why they would announce a new game by interns starting development instead of announcing a game by Cory Barlog that started development 8 years ago.
Because Playstation still has to fill out 3 State of Plays every year. It is not that complicated. Barlog's new game probably won't release until Fall next year. It is the last big announcement for Playstation this generation. Henderson or Schreier posted last year that development was going well. Gotta stop doomsdaying and making shit up
 
Dont you think releasing a next gen console and unnecessarily increasing their R&D costs by billions is going to reduce their profit margins? I dont see why they would want to do this unless they are expecting sales to bottom out soon which Im not sure is going to happen this time around. especially since the console is still $500 and GTA hasnt come out. And even if the sales drop, they will just look to increase the profit margins by releasing games to a bigger audience instead of limiting them to next gen only consoles.

this and the reasons I mentioned about the horror genre's imminent saturation over the next two years, will explain Barlog's project getting postponed to next-gen

the only concern that might prompt them to pursue next-gen rather early and against their will would be fighting the competition
and trying not to fall behind MS and STEAM in procuring RAMs and in the new emergent market of the so-called "console as PC"
