The reason I was always mad about discord was that they transferred former open discussions behind an app. I mean even reddit you can read free, but everything discord related is locked behind an app. Felt always like a step back rather than a step forward. And if I just want to talk with other gamers there are thousand of other possibilities.

I can match make in seconds for any game I can think of, what else does that? Reddit is shit for that

I genuinely don't understand why "Face ID" is a thing.

The face is something visible to everyone all the time, easy to steal with a sneakily performed scan.
So, why not make a "show your tits/pee-pee/whatever-else-normally-hidden ID"?

I've got a 'Message hidden' for several of today's posts from the same person from our (invite only) server. And the verification is not even possible yet, so essentially if that happens it works like you'd have that person on ignore list.

Edit: Scratch my post, some fucker from our server was joking around with a bot to hide messages. ;p

I want to NO app for just reading stuff. You know...like this forum here. I can lurk forever or I can log in and participate...why the need for hiding everything behind an app? It just makes it more difficult to get informations.

Okay, thats understandable from yr pov. I never used discord and never will as it looks like....so for me nothing is really lost.

But I guess you will have to hand them over yr ID or face scan...if you want to "match make" for games which are 18+. Or you look for different solutions to satisfy this use case. Its up to you.

Facial biometrics are a pretty reliable secondary authentication factor. Especially when the auth method incorporates life detection. Human genitalia can be used for some forms of authentication however they are a poor for guessing a users she.

Sharklord may overtake it fairly soon since it's open sourced.

The Discord hate is kind of wild. I don't particularly care for the big message-board-esque Discords myself. Though I am on a few large ones for LFGs for certain games, and those work just swell. And for having private-ish servers with various groups of friends, easy, reliable, high-quality voice chat... it just can't be beat. I saw someone in the other thread talking about Xbox Live Party Chat. My God now that's a useless piece of shit. It's bad on console but boy oh boy is it completely useless if you want to use it on PC. Microsoft should be completely ashamed of the state they left that piece of garbage in.

Complaints about resources? Please, Discord uses like 500mb of RAM and practically no CPU. Has negligible performance impact even on a potato.

Are we mid-enshitification on Discord? Yeah probably. But it's been pretty solid for like 10 years now.

Everything costs money to self-host even if its just power. Self-hosting takes more effort than clicking "create server" and sharing a link like discord. I self host nearly everything I use online but I can't get friends off discord.

Well I'm almost done, left all servers I was on, notified all people that was/is using my server that I'm closing it before the end of Feb and deleting my account.

The brilliance of Discord, and why it became so popular, is it combined 3 things:

• Voice chat, a la Vent/TS
• IRC-like text chat that was moderated only to whoever owned the server's liking and uncontrolled by corporate interests
• Free (but very optional 'paid' features that directly supported the server you were on)

It was a reminder of 'old internet' where communities to self-organize, self-moderate, weren't beholden to the advertisers and didn't have to get permission for anything.

That blog post misses the mark so hard, "teenagers on Discord has significantly increased since the pandemic, and they deserve an experience appropriate to their age". I was once a teenager on real IRC. Did I see stuff that was definitely NOT appropriate for my age? Yup. Am I somehow a broken, traumatized person because of it? No.

You want to know how old someone is? Put the birthday picker in like every website and platform has been doing for the last 30 years. Or better yet, just have a "Are you over 18?" button since that's good enough for every explicit porn site on the internet.

Yes, it costs money for the server (not individual users), as well as you need your own hardware to run it on and keep up with maintenance.

It's not impossible, but Discord removed any cost or maintenance burden.
