Does anyone here browse reddit occasionally

I deleted reddit acct but i occasionally will go back because of how the system works well for searching a specific topic of interest. And when an opinion arises the temptation to raise your voice on it…but then again its prly a bot.

I visit reddit on occasion, when my search for specific subjects points me there. But I never have, and never will, create an account/interact with it.

Yeh sometimes. I see some people talking about Reddit as it all being a total shithole. And I'm sure there are some shitty parts to it. But really it's a bunch of communities and so what might be true of some parts aren't of others.

I still prefer the messageboard layout that we have here on GAF but it's handy having communities dedicated to niche interests.

I look on it often, I don't know why so many people here find it so triggering.

I look at groups dedicated to bands I like or film discussion, etc. etc. And it's just people talking about those things.

Yeah occasionally, some manga/videogame subreddits are pretty alright.

I stay far away from the more general subreddits though. Niche subreddits aside it's an incredibly sanitized echo chamber with zero room for non-conformist opinions, run by a handful of basement-dwelling lunatics. It's just a miserable place to be.

It's good for finding people who have a specific problem you're trying to resolve. I often Google with "Reddit" in the search to avoid Quora and the like which are useless for solving stuff.

This is basically why a few human accounts are still active on reddit. Niche communities. For broad topics, you always have options. This forum for gaming, or your team's fansite for sports, etc. But for niche things like scifi books, or a particular show or game, it's difficult to find a community outside reddit. Maybe Discord. But Discord is also a shithole.

Yeh I don't really post on it but I like that I can curate a feed of things I'm interested in and see discussion around those topics.

The other thing it's good for is finding a solution to a problem.

When I need some info, say modding or repairing, often times search result would led me to some subreddit. Feel disgusted giving them clicks but at least the technical related subreddit don't have some soft of identity crisis.

I visit it daily, just like neogaf. I'm not a political person, far left vs far right to me is idiocracy, I can deal with both crazies here and there, and by that, I just ignore shit. Reddit just like gaf has some good shit, like r/shitposting.

i have an account and go on it daily but i stopped posting on it a long time ago. it's not worth it.

i only have an account to join subs that interest me. it acts as a "news" site / time killer. some articles/updates on things i like and to look at stupid pictures/videos.

On the odd occasion i go to browse but I'm soon reminded what an absolute cesspool of community arse licking it is.

I then forget about it until I forget why I forgot about it.
The cycle continues.

But I will use it if I'm looking up something specific like tech advice.

Permabanned and I wear it as a badge of honor. I do miss some small subs and it was fun getting thousands of upvotes on some stuff, but overall my mental health is better without that site. The mods require you to walk on eggshells and have narcissistic traits. Ban happy deluxe. Just look at how they have automods that ban you if you dare even comment on a verboten sub.

how on earth did you get permabanned from Reddit?

can you not create a new account? i've heard of being banned from subreddits or shadowbanned but not permabanned. what was the reason given?

Google search points me there when I'm looking for something pretty specific about games or tech. I found the solution to a big problem I was having with my GameCube Flippy Drive, thanks to a Reddit thread.

Not touching it for anything else, though.

There are certain topics where you can't deviate from the Reddit norm, not even bring up pure facts from Wikipedia. I felt a big shift in moderation around 2015 and in the 20s it went into overdrive.

They have some sort of stuff which detects your devices no matter what. I don't remember if even VPN helped.

it always helps to add "reddit" to a search. that's how bad traditional search engines have become.

The sheer amount of stupidity on there and people sincerely engaging with it is genuinely mind boggling to me. I genuinely can't fathom the minds of some people who post on Reddit. Reading it feels like jumping into the mind of a bunch of 35 year olds with the mental age of 12 year olds. Imagine people like that all gathering in one place and that's Reddit.

I often look at r/emulationonandroid. It's a good place to see latest developments on that front. I'd rather not have to though but GAF doesn't really have a thread like that.

Never log in and never post. BTW just in case you aren't use old.reddit.com and Reddit Enhancement Suite and you'll have a much better experience with the site overall.

The rest of Reddit though? Fuck no.

I browse some of my more specific interests on Reddit but I rarely interact. Just like everywhere else these days, politics and human rights activists soon find their way in and I end up tuning out for a while.

I go in there for mostly 4k updates and some wrestling but its getting quite annoying. There is so much tds people will find a way to start a trump hate train on random topics that doesn't make sense.

I have basically quit. Sometimes I like to look at Actualpublicfreakouts.

It can be useful for information about setting up internal networks, Plex/Jellyfin and stuff like that.

Overall it is a cespool

I haven't before. If it shows up in a search, I'll look but I've never just browsed it.

I've always hated the interface and structure of it.

Sometimes out of old habits. Every time I do, my anxiety spikes and I just feel pretty bummed out overall. Happens every time. I never walk away feeling good. One of the worst sites on the internet.

I'm grateful we have GAF 🙂

Just stay away from the big popular subreddits + anything that's even remotely related to politics/social issues, then it's a great way to share information and get ideas about whatever subject you're interested in.

Although I'll say, I never felt like I was part of a "community" there. Occasionally someone will put in the effort to make a truly helpful and insightful comment, but it's mostly just people farming karma with "hilarious" one-liners, or arguing and nitpicking shit.

I use reddit daily but I have significantly narrowed the list of subs I visit. I unsubbed from all default subs years ago because they became overwhelmingly politically one-sided. I also got mass banned from like 30 big subs during COVID because I posted in the NoNewNormal sub, which was critical of indefinite lockdowns. I wasn't even some highly vocal dissident about it--I just posted a few times about what was going on in my city and still got mass banned. I guess the joke's on me for still using the site after that.

I use it daily. It is my primary social media.

I look at the Reddit for the local area I live in. I don't think the smaller Reddit threads about local counties in the US are run by bots. Big cities like LA, NYC, etc. Probably are.

Smaller cities though, I doubt.

I do enjoy the "Gaming Leaks / Rumors" thread. The comments are always worth a good laugh.

I also like some of the "food recipe" threads.

Edit: i almost never post on Reddit, and do not have Twitter/FB/Instagram, etc.

Sometimes but I tend to try and stay away from it same with Twitter and Facebook ( haven't used Facebook in likely over a decade ).
Too much brain rot and I don't want my blood pressure to be high constantly.

Yep- stick with the subs I like.

Everyone thinks every sub there is political- its not. I have learned quite a bit on how to invest from Reddit alone.

I also bought shares because I buy what I use.
