Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Continuing with days gone. It's amazing what they did with just screenspace shadows and ao.

Crimson always looked rough in some aspects even in the reveal tho.

I think it's more because dokew has a pixar artstyle so if you see some cartoony rocks and models, it doesn't feel as out of place as crimson who is trying a realistic artstyle.
You have just confirmed what I have always suspected, based on the perception of the average player, that more colorful games tend to be more beautiful, regardless of whether this is true or not. It is no wonder that many consider Yotei or the recently announced Pokémon to be the pinnacle of graphics.
I think it's more complicated than that. I think it's easier for vibrant, cartoony, visuals to look good, but harder for them to receive proper recognition once you pass a certain fidelity.

I think that's why Ratchet & Clank has been underrated all gen
well-so-im-done.gif

A part of me feels that Crimson Desert would look 2x cleaner if they had decided to use some sort of cel-shading, toon shading, or anime shading technique.

Days Gone has me thinking, what do you guys consider last gen's greatest UE4 showcases? Not including more recent cross-gen stuff like Callisto and Jedi Survivor.

Off the top of my head I'd name Gears 5 and Fallen Order along with Days Gone but I'm sure there's plenty of games I'm forgetting.

Days gone on pc, then the ascent on pc, i'm replaying the latter on pc and it still looks nuts sometimes.

I swear i played the first 2 acts of gears 5 and i vividly remember thinking "it's that it?", i just don't get the love for that game, and i played on pc maxed out...

I gotta play the Ascent. It looks crazy.

Thinking about it more, a lot of the Gears 5 hype was around how great it looked and ran on Xbox One X iirc. It's been a while since I played it and it has some very high highs, but some of the areas clearly got more love than others. As a game I hated it though.

I swear people who rally behind G5 always post the same damn 2 pics, the zoom on jd face with the beard and the other one where someone is dropping down from a rope\they are in a tunnel with vegetation, i can't focus on the second one :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

I would replay the damn thing in 4k if i wasn't mentally checked out from gears gameplay half way through gears 3, not sure how i managed to complete 4 but 5 with girlboss was too much...

Not even sure if i'm gonna bother with new one unless they overhauled the whole thing, but hey, people seems to love it :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Damn that looks absolutely ass, how could they ship with that. Japan really needs another QA pass, that shouldn't be ok to ship. Looks like a ps2 asset, totally immersion breaking.
Yeah, and what irks me is that those DF specialists didn't bother to point out all these flaws, like they do with all big names.
If this wasn't RE people would tear into it, everybody is focusing on the beginning and the 1st big area, where yeah, visuals are amazing, but it's still littered with stuff like this.

I'm currently replaying Dead Island 2 and this game is lowkey one of the most beautiful games released in 2023. I've rarely seen such photorealistic interiors. Their lighting is god tier. Can't wait to see what they're cooking with DI3.

Ive mustve spent like an hour just staring at the gyms in it, theyre like in every building, crazy detailed game.

Hellblade 1 probably.
Oh and GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition of course, how could I forget? :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Honestly, I didn't find HB1's visuals as impressive for its time as HB2.
Tbh if you asked me I could not point you towards something in particular graphics-wise that made it standout. Haven't played it in years.
I just remember playing it and being impressed with the visuals because I really did not expect it to look as good as it did to me.

Ghost of Yotei impresses the average viewer precisely because of this: much of the game takes place in cloudy weather, which causes the lighting to obscure the game's PS4-quality graphics.

Actually, Yotei looks like shit in those conditions (Last of Us looks good with overcast weather). Yotei looks the best in rare scenarios when the weather is good and there is direct sunlight, with this we actually have functional lighting in this game:

What happened was unfortunate, but Days Gone had a terribly mismanaged development cycle and it came out a broken mess. Why it reviewed in low 70's. Only after patches did people realize it was a diamond in the rough
Yeah, I only played it on PC which was an excellent port but it sucks that the console version was so rough.

I'm biased but I played it way after it was patched on a PS4 Pro and found it incredibly unispiring still... Pretty for sure and the horde feature was cool but other than that it was mediocre all the way through. The story felt like a shore playing through for me which was a shame... I don't think I would've given it more than a 7/10 if I was a reviewer tbh.

Perhaps one day I'll replay it at 60fps and with a mouse and keyboard and I might change my mind.

It was definitely worse than other Playstation games. Uncharted 4, Horizon, Death Stranding, God of War, Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima, and The Last of Us 2. In that context, Days Gone massively underperformed both commercially and critically of expectations

I really like something about the way Re: Engine games look. There's a solidity to the models and assets, a sort of cg-like quality - idk but it looks good to me for some reason even if there's a lot of uneven bits

RE9 opening area is absolutely stunning. I was going to say it matches bright fall AW2 but I think it's a notch above bright falls. Unreal!!

YOU MUST PLAY THIS GAME WITH PATH TRACING.

This is next gen that we have been talking and waiting on.

Only four games this gen qualifies to be next gen and re9 beats them all.

Wow, this looks stunning, such accurate colors and lighting. How's the performance? Does it use RT of some kind?

I'm not seeing the egregious CA here
Well, to me it is, I've made a habit for about 2-3 years now to be the 1st thing I turn off if it's really bothersome and makes the image blurry.

Some games use it sparingly and it actually enhances the visuals, but here, for me it's bothersome, to each their own.

This whole area has perfect lighting, but how is that CA not bothering you? It makes the image look lower in resolution, I'm guessing it's 4K no?
lol i love it. It gives it that cinematic touch. The last few levels in the game benefit a lot from this. I was in heaven. Literal porn for a graphics whore like me.

This is going to be my most giffed game ever. I'm going to give it a few days to let you guys finish the game of course. What a fantastic game. We've had a lot of very good looking games this gen, but few have had gameplay this good. I hate play almost every game on my top 10 graphics list. Alan Wake 2, Hellbalde 2, Avatar, Outlaws, Mafia, even AC Shadows towards the end of the campaign, all absolutely bored me to death. But this game has to be the best game ive played this gen that also looks next gen as fuck. Wukong, Silent Hill 2, and Jedi Survivor. That's about it. Capcom continues to deliver great RE games one after another, but this time they brought out the fancy graphics. Not perfect in every level. But when it hits and it hits like 70% of the time, it hits hard.

Where's that twitter meme where the guy turns off CA, motion blur, DoF etc. I need a version where it's me turning them all back on, as it should be.

This fucking game... RE9 looks phenomenal, even in RC is still looks great with PT. I tried disabling PT in this level and tried RT high and holy shit... in game denoiser is absolutely tragic.

Materials, lighting, models - full next gen look. With PT we play PS6 Pro games (or 30fps PS6 games):

Fair enough, it wasn't a critique, just wondering. I hate these effects in movies as well, lol. I just like a clean picture.

Well, the highs in this game are some of the best; the problem for me is in between these highs and there are a fair share of these. Yeah, after Raccoon it picks up again visually, where it feels a bit unfinished or rushed.

But still for me overall it doesn't top AC Shadows, SH2, AW2 or Hellblade 2. These felt more even and they have overall better assets or at least didn't notice such crappy ones.

Also, noticed that in Raccoon the game has the highest Vram usage, probably because it's a big open area and probably it's where the usage is close to that 17 GB that Techpowerup mentioned.
I only could play with path tracing there in 1080p, lol, as it maxed my Vram and it bugged the effects of PT.

Ah. Yeah I've never understood people's issue with CA in general, or motion blur - I'm more of a movie guy than a video game guy tho - I like things that look more cinematic vs super clean

Yeah RE9 with Path Tracing is almost unmatched! It literally looks like a movie in many scenes it's crazy, especially the character models, Leon's model detail is absolutely breathtaking combined with PT lighting literally looks like a pre-render CGI model.

Broken is a strong word, i had way less problems at launch with days gone than with your average bethesda\ubisoft game, maybe because i played on pro so performances were better but bug wise it wasn't that bad.

Some reviewers fucked up the game because it wasn't woke enough and deacon had a libido for his wife, they even fucking lied about a joke inside the game, or they never even played the game to completition.

Days gone was definitely not worse than ds1 or spiderman, i think only horizon and gow and tlou2 were better as far as first party but different taste and all.

I love the lighting here. Just perfect. Zero flaws.

weren't you complaining about posting RE9 photos without a spoiler tag earlier on? Can we please make sure we're using spoiler tags, yes it looks great, but I'm getting more and more shown to me before I've even bought it.

That's a tiny list, there's definitely a few to add imo. MGS Delta with hardware lumen modded in, SW Outlaws with PT at the minimum.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake was also quite the looker at the time.

It really looks unreal. I'm playing with path tracing via gfn and blown away by everything. The character models are insane, and in first person it's basically gun porn.

Looks like I'm missing out on not being able to use PT on RE9 on my 9070XT,because I'm not really impressed with the graphics with normal RT
