Graphical Fidelity I Expect This Gen

Continuing with days gone. It's amazing what they did with just screenspace shadows and ao.

Crimson always looked rough in some aspects even in the reveal tho.

I think it's more because dokew has a pixar artstyle so if you see some cartoony rocks and models, it doesn't feel as out of place as crimson who is trying a realistic artstyle.
You have just confirmed what I have always suspected, based on the perception of the average player, that more colorful games tend to be more beautiful, regardless of whether this is true or not. It is no wonder that many consider Yotei or the recently announced Pokémon to be the pinnacle of graphics.
I think it's more complicated than that. I think it's easier for vibrant, cartoony, visuals to look good, but harder for them to receive proper recognition once you pass a certain fidelity.

I think that's why Ratchet & Clank has been underrated all gen

A part of me feels that Crimson Desert would look 2x cleaner if they had decided to use some sort of cel-shading, toon shading, or anime shading technique.

Days Gone has me thinking, what do you guys consider last gen's greatest UE4 showcases? Not including more recent cross-gen stuff like Callisto and Jedi Survivor.

Off the top of my head I'd name Gears 5 and Fallen Order along with Days Gone but I'm sure there's plenty of games I'm forgetting.

Days gone on pc, then the ascent on pc, i'm replaying the latter on pc and it still looks nuts sometimes.

I swear i played the first 2 acts of gears 5 and i vividly remember thinking "it's that it?", i just don't get the love for that game, and i played on pc maxed out...

I gotta play the Ascent. It looks crazy.

Thinking about it more, a lot of the Gears 5 hype was around how great it looked and ran on Xbox One X iirc. It's been a while since I played it and it has some very high highs, but some of the areas clearly got more love than others. As a game I hated it though.

I swear people who rally behind G5 always post the same damn 2 pics, the zoom on jd face with the beard and the other one where someone is dropping down from a rope\they are in a tunnel with vegetation, i can't focus on the second one :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

I would replay the damn thing in 4k if i wasn't mentally checked out from gears gameplay half way through gears 3, not sure how i managed to complete 4 but 5 with girlboss was too much...

Not even sure if i'm gonna bother with new one unless they overhauled the whole thing, but hey, people seems to love it :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Damn that looks absolutely ass, how could they ship with that. Japan really needs another QA pass, that shouldn't be ok to ship. Looks like a ps2 asset, totally immersion breaking.
Yeah, and what irks me is that those DF specialists didn't bother to point out all these flaws, like they do with all big names.
If this wasn't RE people would tear into it, everybody is focusing on the beginning and the 1st big area, where yeah, visuals are amazing, but it's still littered with stuff like this.

I'm currently replaying Dead Island 2 and this game is lowkey one of the most beautiful games released in 2023. I've rarely seen such photorealistic interiors. Their lighting is god tier. Can't wait to see what they're cooking with DI3.

Ive mustve spent like an hour just staring at the gyms in it, theyre like in every building, crazy detailed game.

Hellblade 1 probably.
Oh and GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition of course, how could I forget? :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Honestly, I didn't find HB1's visuals as impressive for its time as HB2.
Tbh if you asked me I could not point you towards something in particular graphics-wise that made it standout. Haven't played it in years.
I just remember playing it and being impressed with the visuals because I really did not expect it to look as good as it did to me.

Ghost of Yotei impresses the average viewer precisely because of this: much of the game takes place in cloudy weather, which causes the lighting to obscure the game's PS4-quality graphics.

Actually, Yotei looks like shit in those conditions (Last of Us looks good with overcast weather). Yotei looks the best in rare scenarios when the weather is good and there is direct sunlight, with this we actually have functional lighting in this game:

Can you imagine bend on a ps5 pro with dg2??!

Sony really fucked up.
What happened was unfortunate, but Days Gone had a terribly mismanaged development cycle and it came out a broken mess. Why it reviewed in low 70's. Only after patches did people realize it was a diamond in the rough

Yeah, I only played it on PC which was an excellent port but it sucks that the console version was so rough.

I'm biased but I played it way after it was patched on a PS4 Pro and found it incredibly unispiring still... Pretty for sure and the horde feature was cool but other than that it was mediocre all the way through. The story felt like a shore playing through for me which was a shame... I don't think I would've given it more than a 7/10 if I was a reviewer tbh.

Perhaps one day I'll replay it at 60fps and with a mouse and keyboard and I might change my mind.
