Marathon releases to 87,000 players on Steam and 87% Positive Reviews (sponsored by coachmcguirk91)

Slay the Spire is massively popular and ironically retained a crazy amount of players despite being single player because of the mods. Very popular in Asia too.

Perhaps it is popular but I probably ignore (or forgot) about it since it has the type of gameplay I would totally avoid (turn based). Good on them (StS) since I never seen any marketing for it, yet it beat the heavily promoted Marathon.

This is day one reviews when hype is through the roof... imagine this number keep going down further in the upcoming days

I hope Concord 2 (Marathon) fails, and that Concord 3 (Horizon GaaS) follows suit.

Sony PlayStation has the talent to make impressive single-player games; let others handle the multiplayer, because users will mostly play them within the PlayStation ecosystem anyway.

Marathon is Concord 3.

I doubt that Marathon is hitting the numbers Sony and Bungie hoped - unless PS has a huge player base relative to PC, which seems unlikely.

But Slay the Spire 2 surpassing it is not really surprising. The original was an extremely popular game. So popular in fact, that a physical board game version of Slay the Spire was created. That game is currently rated the 18th best board game of all time on BoardGameGeek. So there is definitely a massive fanbase for that series.

They dropped the ball on that server slam weekend big time. It will be an uphill battle for them now. It's still possible to be a success I believe.

But that means game don't have any glaring technical issues. Reviews can be bad even on day 1.

I expected lots of things from marathon but to debut lower than concord2(highguard) which had 97k launch ccu, i thought that gonna be close to impossible.
Guess even veteran hc gamers with over 35years of experience can be wrong sometimes :pie_thinking:

To be fair to Marathon with regard to those numbers, Marathon is paid while Highguard was free and Highguard had god awful player retention. If Marathon can manage to keep it's player base engaged it should climb a little higher as we get into the weekend and could still pass 100k.

It's still not a great picture for the longer term though.
Fair enough the free to play thing changes my comparison but still it's not good as you say.

These are the average numbers I've expected it to have (after a week since launch).

Let's wait for the weekend, then we can call it a disaster if numbers don't rise by a lot.

Highguard was F2P, but yeah, those are weak numbers. Helldivers 2 did 430K and costed the same I believe. They either need a mid-sized dedicated player base that will stick around or a huge boost this weekend. That or PS players better be outnumbering PC players 2 or 3 to 1.
That's a good point actually, Bungie do have a lot of fan's on the console side, it may do well there.

oof for a new Bungie game that isn't great...

I did say the beta was bland and meandering, though.

lets see if it can find legs. The only thing that ever sounded good to me seemed either gone or extremely abstract from the beta that i had 0 interest.

The idea of team uncovering places for the first time, and mini destiny-like raids, and so on.

I ended up just playing like your average extraction shooter.

So if you are Hermen Hulst do you tell Bungie you are disappointed by the numbers? or do you congratule them for achieving over 100 times more players than your game of the generation and personal favorite Concord?

I just say this, extraction and battle royale for me personally are two of the worst modern day fads ever.

Imagine, how in 2026 don't we have higher aspirations for shooters with large scale team battles. Like yes we have battlefield which I love, 32v32 but how is bungie not giving us a Sci fi shooter that pushes the boundaries? I could sit and probably fathom up multiple types of games with 50v50, 20v20 whatever etc...

25 years ago, 25 fucking years ago Mythic made dark age of Camelot where the pvp zones had 3 large factions that coukd clash and meet in the battlefields and the endless amount of fun we all had, we're talking battles with 30 40 50 people etc...

And here we are in 2026 with these one two three group games, or solo modes blah blah... I just don't get how we aren't further in the pvp world

My predictions: today's server slam CCU peak will not be topped (even in the weekend), retail launch 50% of server slam CCU peak, and then a gradual drop to 50% of that peak after the first month.

This is not going to pull in the PC/extraction crowd.

They call me Nostra-game-us, the anti-Pachter.

1998 Starsiege Tribes is where it peaked

Don't think it hits 100k. If we make the assumption that the pattern will be similar to the server test, then there will be a fair few players trying it out on Steam before getting a refund.

When will they ever learn they keep making these GAAS extraction type games that cater to such niche player bases. When they release they pull some converts to a few weeks but they all end up just moving on. Only the streamers and people pushing agendas or happen to find a game they are good at hope to keep it alive.

The genre isn't built for longevity IMHO. Nowadays you have to cater to casual audiences for the most part. Helldivers2 is still popular but that's because it's not a toxic trait game like these all turn into. I'm ready for a hardcore extraction co-Op game not PvP

They will drop the price t0 19.99 within a month or F2P and dead within 3 months.

It's not that i hope they fail... Ok maybe a little...

But i agree 100% with the second paragraph.
I think Playstation found the secret sauce mid PS3 era:

1. Make good single player exclusive games
2. Sell a ton of consoles because of these games
3. Enjoy the 30% cut from everything sold on your system.
