Resident Evil Requiem --- Open Spoilers Discussion ---

I liked Village more than Requiem tbh even though Village's level design shits the bed way quicker at least I'm fighting different types of enemies the entire game.

Enjoyable but it's just all over the place. Pacing is off, the environments are boring imo, especially racoon city, and the enemy variety in severely lacking. There were parts in the game I couldn't help but laugh how dumb the characters acted, which I get is sometimes needed for narrative convenience but Grace going off with Zeno and Victor might be the most idiotic thing I've witnessed a character do in the franchise.

I'm not sure if it's just me but I really miss good soundtracks in these games. I didn't notice any meaningful or impactful scores to Requiem, compared that to say the original RE2 OST which I thought really enhanced the atmosphere of that game. I still think it's a solid 7/10 and a fun romp overall but can't say I'll be going back to it anytime soon. Certainly one of the weaker entries in the series imo.

I also wish they hadn't seemingly forsaken music in all these newer titles. Hate that so much.

For me the best music of RE9 was the remix on the RPD section...

I've also been considering finally going through RE6 as I only ever sunk a couple hours into Leon's or Chris's campaign and it's the only mainline entry I've never finished.
it's the kind of game where it eventually wouldn't surprise you if you literally saw a kitchen sink being thrown in from somewhere. it's that relentlessly 'content rich'...

So after a week and 3 play trough later, while I really enjoyed it at first since the new game is very nostalgic both for the mansion style exploring and obviously the big return. But unfortunately it is also very bland and unimaginative when it comes to Raccoon city visually and the enemies, and even the boss fights. I think it is really missing that extra something that would make it way more memorable in the long run.

yep. when it comes to resident evil storytelling, coherence can often just get in the way of entertaining set pieces...
That's not to say that coherence can't be done alongside bombastic set pieces, it's just that RE is not like that. There was always something cheesy about it and its storytelling.

That RE1 OG intro - which is my favourite RE - comes to mind, with that awful and cheesy acting, lol. But I also think it's because that's what gaming was then, nothing too serious.

So Requiem follows the same formula, hints of something serious, but ultimately it's all one liners and ridiculous plots.

yeah, it's proven to be an incredibly durable formula: classic pulp. i realize there're gamers who like taking their games seriously, but this's never really the franchise for that (thankfully)...

Story in RE is video game ass story telling that only works as video game….is it deep or masterful story telling? Absolutely not. Is it fun? Fuck yes.

i've read loads of classic pulp: tarzan, conan, fu manchu, mike hammer, etc. it's a rich tradition: cartoons for grownups. what impresses me with capcom is how they've been able to keep it alive through a succession of different staff, because pure over-the-top entertaining escapism's not really all that easy to do well...

Yep. They do play it straight with some characters. Grace cries, trips, falls, whimpers, and acts like someone trapped in an insane asylum. Her acting is fantastic. Especially when she thinks the elevator cut her leg off. I love this shot of her screaming for Leon. There is real concern here. Real desperation. Leon's death in the alternate ending hit me like a brick and pissed me the fuck off, but it wouldnt have happened if they didnt have Grace grounding the story and giving it a heart and soul.

Finished 3 playthroughs, 1st on normal modern, game said it took me 19 hrs, in reality it was longer, 30 something hrs with retries, reloads and just drooling at the visuals.
2 and 3 were one casual to try different stuff and challenges. I started a 4th one on insanity, but spoiled myself with infinite ammo+started to feel the fatigue.

While I very much liked the game, it's in fact the 1st RE game to play multiple playthroughs back to back, I have some issues with the game.

Story
I'm not going to critique the plot and storytelling too much, as I already said, it's a not too serious cheesy series, you either take it or leave it.
Although I admit that after seeing that the intro and the 1st stalker area with Grace is more on the serious side I hoped it would be like that all the way.

Gameplay
The gameplay is fantastic, all Grace stuff until you leave the Care area. The tension in the 1st stacker area is amazing. The Care area is also amazing, just classic RE mansion stuff with back and forth, planning routes, when to engage in fights, crafting, almost perfection.
I also enjoyed the basement, the lab and the sewer or whatever they're called, but I feel those could have been somehow merged into one big interconnected area.
Leon gameplay, amazing as well, love blasting those zombies with either guns or melee. The Raccoon area is a cool interesting concept, but boring and I feel it should have been centered around the RPD area, where there wasn't much to do.

The bad or uninspiring
The lab was nothing special, a bit bland, a bit dissapointing, could have been longer and more complex.
The final boss, a major letdown from all points of view.
You have the main villain, which had a mysterious, creepy, menacing presence at the start and that gets overshadowed by discount Wesker to then reappear blasting rockets at you on a motorcycle, lol, disappear again only to reappear again as the final boss, just uninspiring.

The game feels like a bunch of games in one, it's RE2+RE4+RE7.
I understand all the criticisms for the pacing and all that. I appreciate the duality in gameplay and tone with Grace vs Leon, but they wanted to please both 1st and 3rd person fanbases, they should have stuck with one.

If I were to give it a score, a solid 9, it could easily have been higher and be the best RE for me.

The game was very fun, a while back when RE4R came out, I hoped RE 9 would have kept that gameplay formula for the next RE games and we got it with Leon, Grace sections are amazing for the horror and the whole game is clearly CAPCOM combining RE 7 / RE 4R into one game, I can see a RE 0/1/CV R keeping that gameplay style of an FPS / 3rd person perspective while toning down the action with the knife / hatchet parry only reserved for defensive items this time ( Flashbang / dagger / stungun ...) better yet having dual protagonists in each games mentioned, if more, could have the same structure as RE9.

For RE 1 : Chris / Jill -> Game start as soon as the heli drops , you can play this time the events of the intro of RE1 OG, the forest and the dogs, the group get separated Chris starts in a different area where he'll met Rebecca and Richard, Jill Barry & Wesker are in main hall, in this version tough, separate campaigns, no big sections like RE9 to switch between keep it like the OG, jill will have the evade/roll/dash of RE3R while Chris will have power moves / knife attacks to execute weakened ennemies and can tank more damage. Have more sequences with other STARS members in flashback or casettes tapes you found on their bodies (assuming they got recording body cam like RE1R with Kenneth).

RE 0 : Have the intro of OG RE0 playable with stars bravo team investigating with you then Train section with rebecca who meet Billy but they get separated in the training facility and you have differents zones to explore but they can't regroup, you need to find key items to give to the other to progress in their sections, kinda like the item lift briefly used in the train but the whole game, they are forced to cooperate, even in the iteam management have Rebecca the only one capable of mixing herbs / defence items (improvised spraycan flamethrower anyone? Molotovs) while Billy can mix ammo and upgrade guns. you can't switch to them freely only leave key items and supplies trough the item lifts or other contraptions to keep the game scary and enough difficult. Scrap Singing LGBT Marcus and rework him as a nemesis / Mr X type who forms when leeches are found since they share counciousness, put more Birkin and Wesker and plant the seeds of 'the foundation' with the files.

RE CV : do the RE9 formula with Claire / Chris start at the Umbrella HQ/Labs in Europe with Claire and when that end, switch to Steve on the Island and it's before the prison virus outbreak, you see the inner working of the prison and other NPC's, oh by the way bring back the original script were the ashfords were actual NAZIS don't censor it, experimenting on childs in RE 2 is ok but somehow blonde and blue eyes wearing uniforms in a concentration camp is too risqué, anyway then you heard / see Claire arriving on the Island but she's sedated, soon after all hell breaks loose and you experience the first hour of the chaos from steve perspective , switching to Claire section for the next hours like the OG game progression and 2 location later ending with Steve getting captured (you play as him during that key moment trying to escape getting the covid shot obligatory spoilers alert you fail) then Chris section untill rest of the game.

Yeah, almost everything with Grace is fantastic, from the gameplay to acting to story.
But then you have the villain showing up out of nowhere on a motorcycle shooting rockets, then falling off the road like a turd, lol. I mean, that shit is funny, but it creates this discrepancy in the tone and this is what RE is.

Can anyone explain to me why if Grace is normal she is immune to the virus? She is biten by the cop in the introduction but for mysterious reasons she wasn't infected. I missed something in the narrative or is the new high point in the list of the bullshits we can find after ending the game?

We don't actually see anyone turning by bites I believe, everyone at the start gets turned by Victor and whoever they attack/bit just die; the ones in the care center are patients who were being experimented on, and the rest of the staff were probably just turned by Victor as well; whatever he's using might not be infectious that way because it seems similar to the controlled/assassin BOW used to kill Alyssa, instead of causing an outbreak by spreading rapidly.
That or she just has natural immunity, 10% of the population was straight up immune to the t-virus, so it's not impossible 🤷‍♂️

But the story in this game is unfun. If I even replay it I will skip all cutscenes.

The story wants to take itself serious but it fails, it's also boring.

Yeah Victor with infinite ammo to infect people or the natural immunity seems a reasonable hypothesis surely thinking by capcom writers

Yes and Yes?

He literally rapid fire infects 4 people at the start, and the people they kill don't turn, same with the people he turns later at the intersection; at the care center there could be some kind of dispersal system, but also there aren't actually a 1000 zombies there, that's just for leon's gameplay purposes.
Note how they don't actually even try to turn anyone, they just try to kill, the assassins use knives, the cop keeps using his shotgun, the doc guts the poor nurse with a chainsaw etc.
And the 10% natural immunity is established in the lore for almost 30 years, it's not something new.

Doesn't explain the 20-30 Zombies in the street if he only shoots 4 people. Pretty sure Wrenwood becomes a hot zone that you never return to.

Also why the virus infects with a bullet syringe but not with a bite 😆 It's absolutely ridiculous.

There's never 30 zombies in the street, there's the 4 he infects in the cutscenes, less then 10 leading up to the intersection, who also don't turn anyone, and then another 5 or 6 at the intersection; he also tells sherry to lock down wrenwood and she never brings it up again so there's no outbreak.

Yeah but we also aren't hanging around in this area for more than a couple of minutes. Think about marvin, he took quite a while to get to that point. That's not proof positive that these people will not turn.

But yes, in general it does seem like for whatever magical reason this particular strain is not infectious.

They also fail to mention the modified T-Virus strain allows the Zombies to retain fragments of their lives causing recurring behaviors to occur but while they kill you in a myriad of ways they still go out of their way to eat you which ideally if you aren't damaged enough would turn you into one of them.

R Reizo Ryuu It needs to be locked down to contain the spread. And given it's the same strain from the hospitals you have the chance of dead zombies turning into Blisterheads as loosely illustrated in Insanity mode.

That sounds really optimistic that he's able to tell someone over the phone to lock it down and the problem is solved. I think this is just a set piece that's unresolved and poorly thought out personally.

The open map on village is way better.

The game is overhyped because leon , viauals and social media with people that havent played another RE.

It's top 2 worst main re, people hate re6 bit requiem has some stupid Hollywood shit too.

Core Gameplay is fun because It was fun 20 years ago with original re4.

Zombie physics, ragdolls and gore are shit if you played RE2, updated the engine for what.

I have to agree. We are not to the same level of shitness of RE6 but it's definitely the worst RE of the new wave. I'm replaying actually RE8 on switch 2 I know many people hate because it's very particular but there is a massive difference in quality in the gameplay design almost embarassing . You see the difference between a whole game thinking from the begin to the end and what they did with RE9.

I enjoyed this, there's so many great elements, but it is a little inconsistent.

The beginning is ace, it's nice to see Resi back in a City, if only briefly. Grace within the Care Home is classic Resi, feels like being back in the mansion; and the basement sequence is properly disconcerting.

It's great switching to Leon's gunplay for a prolonged spell and he has some sequences - notably the spider, plant and bike chase. But the plot seems to stall in the overlong middle section, and the early part of Racoon City really needed something to give it some character, maybe a sub-plot and supporting character within that section.

When the plot does pick back up, it nose dives after the introduction of fake Wesker, who was just unnecessary, and the fact they are cloning Grace, who is just someone that can guess a password. I don't like the retcon of Spencer.

Personally think the whole thing plays better in third, and would be happy if they never offered first person again.

Despite it's flaws, it's a 9/10 experience and a bit of a return to form for me.

And I thought I was harsh. I think RE9 could vie being the best worst mainline RE along with Code Veronica and RE5-8 (and RE0 if that's considered mainline). And while RE6 is the worst, I do think it has the most interesting mechanics of the lot.

Still I want know the medical explanation of a virus which can infects with a syringe puncture but not with a bite.
I mean it's all science fiction, it's not actually real, all the viruses basically act like magic.
These are BOWs, however they act and function is engineered.

It's not science fiction this is rushed writing and unfortunately not the only thing in this game which appear inconsistent. Seems almost they changed the game director or some trouble is happened in the middle of the development.

Thanks guys for all the answers about RE6. I think I will just replay RE5, lol. Or maybe finally start revelations...

lmao. is this your first re game? the main character gets bitten every five seconds during gameplay and survives. Claire, Leon, Chris dont have immunity either and they get bitten all the time.

I wouldn't loop Requiem in with RE6.

RE6 is a piece of shit from beginning to end. Half of RE9 is great with Rhodes Hill, and Leon's sections are at worst a 7/10. But nothing in the game reaches RE6's levels of bad.

The elevator scene was intense I legit thought it happened and she lost her leg.
I actually almost wish she did because it could've made for interesting gameplay, altho would probably have been very frustrating on replay.

They could've made her stumble and fall every few seconds during chase scenes.

I also almost thought she lost her leg and it went down with the girl. My initial thought was okay that's the end of her and the rest of the game is Leon mostly but of course that didn't happen.

i just got done with my 3rd playthrough myself. First one took 15. Ingame timer was 11 which is what most people were reporting but Capcom doesnt include cutscenes and other menus in the timer. The second one i did the no health and no blood run. The third one was with infinite ammo speedrun. Steam shows 27.5 hours. Just goes to show that if you make a great game with replay value, i will put in 30 hours. You dont need to make bloated 30-40 hour games. Take note sony.

I will also give it a 9. Looking back the final boss was indeed a bit underwhelming.

I'm very close to abandon my 2nd run. Even the first section with Grace lost its charm after finishing it once. Shame…
Yes, after the initial surprise of the zombies having their own routines, comes the realization they just follow very basic scripts, like walking from point A to B and then A again. Most zombies don't even leave their rooms.

I'm at the spider boss and struggling to continue.

I know Emily wasn't doing so great, but you could've basically crawled ( as fast as she could, or get a stick to help her walk on one leg ) to the helicopter and then Emily could've done the rest of the section to get the key and have it be the '' kid stealth section '' instead of the orphanage ( again ).
And then it basically would've been Leon from there.
