Marathon |OT| A Shell of its Former Self.

The audio is such a HUGE part of this game. Last night I was in a building, no one around and just as I knife a vent to go in, I hear a single bullet shot near me. I dove in to the vent and was in a tiny room so I just sat there and listened and listened. Soon after I could hear another player crouch walking in the hallway I just came from and I continued to sit there and sit there since I knew they were still around, thinking about whether they should come in to the vent or not. They threw a smoke grenade in and I didn't flinch, I just waited and waited. All the time I could hear them crouch walking and knew exactly where they were. Then they apparently figured I was no longer there and came in through the vent and met my LMG, and I downed them. That entire encounter, except for the smoke grenade part, was entirely predicated on very subtle audio and it was GREAT!

I am still running into the weird audio issue where when I'm walking/running about, I can sometimes hear my own footsteps as though they're coming from behind me, causing me to stop dead in my tracks and check for other players. I'm on PS5 Pro and using the Inzone H7 headset. The audio is pristine 95% of the time, it's just those weird instances where my own footsteps are out of sync for some odd reason.

Saw the fist steps for archive completed when I went to sleep. Nothing on next step yet.

Also saw there is a tier above yellow gear? Orange.

This game. This fucking game!!!

The Overrun AR is the only gun so far that I truly dislike in the game. Its pure trash. It makes the free kit Rattler from Arc look God Tier.
The green and blue Overruns you can unlock for purchase by leveling CyAc are definitely better, but yeah, never my first choice. Or second, or third.

What a delusional tweet, everything is a metaphor for snowballs like this if you can just shoehorn yourself into the equation.

Games got flaws but is seriously a very good one. Done nothing but play on perimeter all weekend and have had a blast.
Yeah I hate the haters too but that tweet is goofy as hell.

Yeah i got a bunch of kills solo by listening to audio. Its so important

Release thread having more replies than the OT is shameful (no I have not even dared to look inside the release thread).

The game is so fucking good, deserves all the success in the world, I'm kind of blown away by it.

Recklessly finishing the job lol:

This was a while back when doing my 10 finishers quest, I got eager to stab lol, normally I'd be a lot more cautious.

nah fuck this game. the first map is supposed to be easy? i just killed a guy, then went about my business looting and died with full health to some fucking gas..as the game doesnt tell me at all how to fix it

Are you playing solo? I really don't think this game was tuned for solo properly. They didn't even want to do solos but got so much backlash they threw it in. Try squads for a bit and see if that works better for you. Add some people from the list. My name is on there but I wont be on until later tonight after I put my son down. I already have a group with another we can try and help you out.

You need to read item description. I'm 100% certain you've picked up at least 1 mechanic's kit on your runs.

so basically if you arent good you just play with a free kit forever and never actually get to do anything different? this game is ass. Seriously if i never extract do i ever get any gear then?

i struggle with having any time to read inventory stuff, the text is long and theres like 90 different items you pickup in a run its annoying

You want to have the blue and red "pouches" with you. One is for OS effects and one is for Mechanical. If you have the Auto-Item set for heals/shields then it should default to the correct one to clear any status effects you have.

Maybe try to read? Also play slowly. Once you start rushing, you'll die. I learned this the hard way while i was struggling with a contract and just wanted to get over it quickly

As long as you complete contracts you will start to get good items as rewards. You don't have to extract.

In a perfect world, how would you want the game to tell you how to clear toxin damage?

The pink consumable (mechanic kit) removes toxin (from tox room and toxic plants), overheat (good after a Recon sends their drone at you), and immobilize (some USEC will hit you with this, especially the flying ones that latch tendrils on you).

The blue one (OS reboot) removes hack (the glitched out screen effect you get from green tripwires) and EMP.

There's basic and advanced versions of both, just like shields and patch kits. If you have auto-item set, it should in theory use the appropriate one, but try to remember which is which. Super important thing to learn in early game. They also give you a slight buff against those effects in the first place. I've had times where remembering to use the mechanic kit was the difference between life and death because my dumb ass ran into a toxic plant.

You will learn by doing. If you're really struggling, just accept you're going to die a lot, run free kits, and stick to areas around your spawn. Yes you'll die but you'll start learning the layout of the POIs which is the most important thing in early game. You'll start leaning how to evade and de-aggro UESC. Knife them in the back if you can - with base melee it's a two-shot to the back for the weaker ones. Ping USEC even if you're playing solo because you can see how tough they are. Blue ones are tougher, purple even tougher. If you're just starting out and running free kit, you really don't want to fight the tougher ones. You'll start learning where hazards are likely to spawn too. Turrets and tick nests don't always spawn in the same place. Sometimes buildings are full of mines and tripwires, sometimes not etc. Tox room has set locations it can spawn but sometimes it doesn't.

General tips and tricks, I'm still using this as a cheat sheet after 25 hours:

All jokes aside I'll take the time to give you some ideas and tips with the notion you want to improve and enjoy:

-Is this your first extraction shooter? If so, you need to play slow. Always.
-Solos is a good way to learn at your own pace BUT it's also a good way to die a lot if you play too fast and don't try to learn
-Triage is a good class to start with just use his bot to keep it up on you at all times for free slow health and shield regen
-When you spawn with a free kit you get an ammo box to use right away to get extra ammo
-Do not fight uesc bots unless you need to as they will burn your ammo and give away your position
-Focus on learning maps, what items do what, and doing the story contracts bit by bit
-If you get to exfil try to take with you credits for extra money towards unlocking things in skill tree
-Don't waste your money on items only skill upgrades
-As you level a faction you can go to armory to barter for items and ammo using items you find instead of money
-Your loot is not yours, you're just holding it for the next player

Huh? The guy is praising the game.

Another tip for the running with bad squads problem is to run free kits until you get matched up with players you click with. Once you're near extract just say "You guys want to party up after this?" and they'll almost always say sure. There's a lot of solo players who want to run with other mic users.

A lot of it is accepting two things:
-The games entire marketing has been about you will die a lot and Tau Ceti merciless. The third map is no joke.
-Go in with a learning mindset. Go with free loadouts galore to learn and learn with no risk and all reward.

The more time you spend you'll soon be clapping cheeks.

If I can't get a third IRL buddy to join me and my duo for archive I may for the first time ever hit up GAF…

I just wish to remain my anonymous shitposting self. That awkward chat initially, me worrying about mic background noise, accidentally offending someone. Too much pressure, the anxiety.😥

Why is this failing? One of the most fun online shooters I've ever tried.
I really don't understand the gaming market anymore.

Clarky and vicious are super chill, had a lot of fun playing with them. Copefully they would say the same about me :messenger_sunglasses:

I was shepherding my noob friend around Perimeter last night. Felt very wise in the moment. In reality I'm only slightly less retarded after 25 hours than the brand new players are after 30 mins. I need someone screaming at me to bring me back down to earth.

It's not failing. If Bungie can deliver a good 3 month season, plus a solid plan for season 2 ahead of the wipe, you'll see the steam CCU jump up, if that's what you're referring to.

This thing launched with a massive handicap though.

A lot of the hope of this going up rides on:
-Bigger streamers ignoring their whiny toxic chat to bring eyes to the game as they have fun
-The 4th map being incredible

Yeah, Peanut playing it off stream because his chat screams at him is sad and weird as fuck lol.
But yeah, Outpost is great. If they nail the map and experience in Cryo Archive, who knows what'll happen.

Just a heads up I wasn't sure if getting level 10 for the factions once you run out of quests will result in more story line ones but it does. Mida is easy to level. I just reroll the side quests to kills and break windows for 35 to 150 credits. Now im back to story quests.

Curious to hear where you guys think the 5th map will land?

A more farm friendly map than Perimiter? Right between Dire Marsh and Outpost? What would benefit the game the most?

I know it's likely coming around September / October but interesting to consider.

Yea one guy I play with has everything at level 10 and apparently after that you start having to go to the outpost map.

Is there an overworld map? I havnt seen all that much in terms of indicators that would place me somewhere on the planet quite like how arc raiders maps lean into the relevant orientation of the locations on Calabretta.
