Marathon |OT| A Shell of its Former Self.

I got the trophy for eliminating 147 UESC units last night, and I still don't have the trophy for killing 14 rival runners lol. Yeah…I think I'm pretty bad at the PVP part of this game.

Why is this failing? One of the most fun online shooters I've ever tried.
I really don't understand the gaming market anymore.
Because people are dumb af. They always say they want new shit, no handholding, bold new directions. Its finally here and the same people are just being fucking toxic online about this game and just want it to fail. Also this shows exactly why big companies doing the same old shit, mainstream ultra casual games with yellow paint plastered all over the place, because most of the gamers are retarded af nowadays, they cant even read and have 0 attention span. I will always respect Bungie for taking this bold direction, but sadly we see the results and im fucking sad about it

Damn I got this trophy last night and I don't think I have the 14 rival runners trophy either. I have to be close though cause I do get kills.

I like to be fair in my assessment of this game and the player response.

-Issue one Bungie history with woke stuff, monetization, art scandal
-Issue two is people online like to hate on GaaS when they are probably playing one to two already in their game rotation
-Art style isn't for everyone
-How to access the alpha was dumb they should've had more public beta's and …
-Actuallly listen to feedback given to you
-UI, onboarding, bad cosmetics, and whack season pass were all brought up numerous times

A lot of the above could've been sorted prior to launch and maybe it boosts the game player base a bit but let's no get it twisted that a hardcore PvP focused extraction shooter wasn't going to be a big hit. It's why Arc IS a hit and the devs have no clue how to do new content IMO.

At the end of the day the argument "if they'd just made a really good game then more people would've played it" is bull shit here. The game IS really good hence the user reviews stating as such. It just isn't a mass appeal product unless changes down the road can somehow bring in more casual folks but not forsake the core base.

I think this would be a big mistake. Dunno man this industry fucking sucks. I knew this never gonna be a big hit, but at this point im just waiting for the inevitable layoffs and marathon team restructuring news. I bet sony had huge expectations, because they had no clue what these guys made.

This game for any other studio would be a huge hit. :(

It's such a good game.

I'd be surprised if Sony had huge expectations for this game considering it's an extraction shooter. All you have to do is look at the market for these games and none of them are big except for Arc Raiders.

This is enough reason for the dumbass execs to expect the same success here.

Game is absolute fire. I'm sure it will be ok in the long run.

And agreed. Not often you get something like this in the AAA space, it should be supported.

I think they should have made the beginner perimeter more noob friendly and longer. Missions specific to that map only to teach everyone what's what and free health and plenty of ammo etc.

Also the grind is real, you need to commit a lot of time if you want to get the most out of the season I think. Good for me, for the casual not so much.

I shudder to think what the new player experience will be like in 4 weeks.

I don't think it's "failing" by any means. Especially when comparing it to other failed titles. It's just not doing insane numbers, but there's a lot of reasons for that. On top of extraction shooters still being pretty niche, the divisive art style, etc.

It could be just fine and we'll see it stick around for awhile, but only time will tell. There are way too many variables behind closed doors to know what's gonna keep them afloat and what isn't. All we can do is hope it'll pan out well.

How much do you think tarkov was a point of refference durring the dev timeline? Cause that game feels like its melted down into obscurity again and I remember bungie being adamant about wanting to take on what was popular/hot for the genre at the time of announcment.

True. The online shooter genre has been stale for literally the last 5 years, and then this gem comes along. I can't imagine someone liking online shooters and not playing this.

Assuming Crimson Desert runs great on PS5, then I'll be putting a lot of time into that. I can't see myself getting to the "endgame" content very often due to so many games coming out (and of course a backlog).
Marathon will be something I play for a bit, drop, and then pick up to play a bit later down the road.

True enough im on CD too if it is a good game. Marathon needs that 4th map same week to pull me away.

Well then that would really be an issue with Herman Hulst and in his inability to do his job properly. If he can't do something as simple as look at that current market for a genre and come up with a meaningful estimate for how well a game would do then he just needs to go. Which many people have said already. With that said no one expected Arc to do as good as it did so Marathon was greenlit with an estimation much lower than whatever Arc did because Arc wasn't even in the market at the time this game was approved.

I think it was a huge point of reference but I'm not sure but did they ever have a playercount listed? I'm not sure they would be able to get much information from that game a lone. They probably saw how dedicated the fan base was, saw how Hunt was doing and saw that in general the extraction shooter space was open for someone else to jump into. The player count they have right now is more than enough to keep it going but the question how much will it drop from here.

They need to improve the store and add more stuff to buy. Hell I'm ready to spend more money but I need some compelling stuff to buy. New finisher animations, better costumes, etc. I would have got the BP already if it was worth it but it's just not.

Yes they need to ease up on the grind a bit. Make it easier to upgrade your character instead of needing all these small items they want. You to do. The paid sponsored equipment is pretty good though I'll admit.

I'm definitely committed to getting the most out of this first season, after that we'll see how things go. I'm not one to devote myself to a single game for years on end like some players of Destiny and other live service games. But if nothing else, I'm sure I'll always be back at the start of each season to see what's new and decide how far I want to go.

What I'm saying is, I'll hold you to that. Need all the friends I can get since I doubt my usual group will be going all the way, most of my friends aren't the type to commit to a multiplayer game to this extent.

Destiny I rode each expansion and did all content.

D2 I just came for the story expansions after a while and watched raids online for lore.

This game I'll go big dick until or if it pulls a D2.

Pretty much my timeline.

I'll eat, shit, sleep & breathe this game if the rest is as good as what I've played so far. That said I work in remote locations with shitty internet sometimes, which is when I catch up single player stuff.

Yeah, but when they greenlit it, there was no ARC Raiders. Needless to say, after that game happened they probably were expecting impossible numbers.

Edit: ah, this point was already written above.

Game is fucking incredible, I'm falling for it even more every night. Just had a great great run...

The spaws on Dire Marsh in Solo really need some work. It was now the second time I spawned on the outskirts of the map almost next to another player. After turning the camera he was almost in sightline.

Yeah it sucks. I died within 15 seconds one time. Guy was just standing near the pipes and watching my spawn

Love how teams tend to converge around the center of Dire Marsh when the shooting starts. Haven't even played the map much yet but have had multiple 3-way or 4-way fights going there, UESC getting involved, total chaos. V ViciousAgenda and myself and a random got sucked into what I think was a 4-way after hanging around Maintenance for way too long, managed to disengage and exfil with the random even giving me two rod salvage for the first Traxus contract.

Playing with two friends last night, we took out one team at algae ponds, got jumped by a second, both my friends went down but then the team that jumped us got attacked from behind. I was able to sneak around for a couple minutes and eventually get one friend back up (he hadn't been looted yet) and we sprinted for exfil (took out a lone Assassin on the way), team or rook got out just before we arrived so we had to run to the next one. Made it out but it was tense. Spectator cam after we extracted showed a sneaky Rook hiding just around the corner from our extract. Guess he was too chicken to make his move.

I've killed someone within the first minute on Perimeter but only once so far. Early deaths have been happening a lot more on Marsh.

Are you the assassin i sniped a little while ago? I was up in the tower raining hell via a longshot.

Bungie please add a voice comms output device option in the PS5 settings similar to PC, I don't want voice comms coming through the controller speaker.
Also please fix the Twitch drops not fully working.

i want hand holding though :( im struggling and ive been gaming for 25 years. I dont think the game will fail, i think its going to pick up, word of mouth will spread and clips will go viral etc. Game is polished as far as gameplay goes

You want to have the blue and red "pouches" with you. One is for OS effects and one is for Mechanical. If you have the Auto-Item set for heals/shields then it should default to the correct one to clear any status effects you have.
does this actually work ? i swear i had auto equipped and 1 of every pack and it didnt take away status effect. Is smart heal for everything or just shields/health?

It's for health, shields, and status effects. It for sure works and I use it all the time.

Is there an overworld map? I havnt seen all that much in terms of indicators that would place me somewhere on the planet quite like how arc raiders maps lean into the relevant orientation of the locations on Calabretta.
I meant "where will it land" in terms of difficulty.

Perimeter - Easy
Dire Marsh - Medium
Outpost - Hard
Cryo - Very Hard
