I'm mean, it's "Press the jump button"n gameplay, but...

As far as the hover pack mechanic, wasnt there a jetpack-enhancer platformer before Sunshine? I can't recall one in the 2D era, but it feels real familiar for a PS1 or DC game? The only one coming to mind was Daxter on PSP, but that was obviously a few years after.

Everything is a rip off from something else. Take Quentin Tarantino for example, rip off of many different sources like Elmore Leonard for dialogues and so on.
You don't have to invent the wheel everytime just take it and adjust it (Civilization quote, lol)

I mean you almost have to rip off Mario in some ways now. It's done everything. It's kind of like " the Simpsons did it " South Park episode

Technically yes, but it's also a rip-off from other Mario games as well, such as Galaxy and 3D World. Unfortunately, it failed to copy Mario games' sales numbers.

Which ripped off Ratchet and Clank 2. Checkmate. Chummmm........p.
I know you felt like a badass by typing this dumbass post, but Astrobot openly rips off Galaxy's power ups and enemies and doesn't even try to pretend it doesn't, still a better game than recent Marios.

everything in Astrobot is derivative. not only from Mario Sunshine, but generally Mario and similar 3D platformers.

they have the invisible blocks that become visible through a special light, which is something mario and probably other games already did.
it has the balancing on balls, which is prominently featured in Mario Galaxy.
it has WHAT IF CHARACTER BIG?, which is also pretty cliché.

and it does borrow a few Fludd nozzles from Sunshine as well yeah.

Mario Sunshine is there with bubsy 3d and astro bot destroyed Odyssey and bananza.

Nintendo stop making Mario games for movies, accoding to famitsu several Mario devs changed their genre to work at the red town like sony's bitches.

This is a silly discussion. Astrobot dev got on stage and paid homage to Mario directly. This "ripped off" nonsense is just a silly warrior take. Video games are fulled of influences from past games and everyone knows it.

"....let's not forget that even before PlayStation there were people making platformers. I remember I was a kid in 1989 Christmas, and I got a grey box, there was a game packed in, it was called Super Mario Bros. and it was really, really great - so we are in Japan, we are in Tokyo, they are in Kyoto, but I want to pay tribute to the company who really put like platformers and showed us innovation and quality consistently, and inspired us to actually make the game that we made...And I've managed not mention them, have you noticed? But you all know who they are"

I'm glad they owned up to ripping off Mario and I hope they feel immense shame.

It's not even the same 3D platformer that released the same day.

Did I got it right ?

Remember, good artists borrow. Great artists steal.

Astro Bot is like your friend copying your homework, but he only copies one paragraph. Astro Bot is basically a poor man's Mario game. Gorgeous for sure, but very paltry in terms of game mechanics.

On the topic of Sunshine I never bothered to play more than an hour of it. Boooring game. The Galaxy games were an incredible step up. But I hope we get a direct successor to SM64 some day.

I guess Mario 64 is a rip off of Jumping Flash due to the triple jump mechanic. Sunshine wasn't even the first to do the hover mechanic, Spyro came before it.

Just started playing it and while it's indeed quite fun, I can't help but notice it plays a lot like SMS. I mean the double jump is very similar to Fludd.
By this logic, Super Mario Sunshine is ripping off the hover mechanic the mechs have in Sonic Adventure 1 and 2.

Its just a hover mechanic... nothing derivative at all about it.

Mario Sunshine was shit. Second worst Mario I have played, after whichever one was just a dream, was it Mario 2? :pie_thinking:

Mario 2 is good when you play the GBA remake.

the original was clunky, the SNES remake was ok-ish, and the GBA remake finally made it an actually good game
