I dint respect the Oscars once I read that you must tick specific requirements to be eligible.

I do think this movie was better than Sinners though.

The casting requirements are the reason some actors aren't historically accurate in movies anymore.

I loved the Jimmy Kimmel punchline at the documentary section:
"Man, he surely is pissed she wasn't nominated"
I had to laugh out loud at that moment

Don't think I've seen a single nominated movie apart from F1 once it was available for streaming. I'm so out of it when it comes to staying up to date with releases and so on, it's a disgrace. the only two movies I know are coming are Oddyssey and Dune part 3 for this year that I want to see in the cinema. Oppenheimer was my last visit.

I've only seen One Battle After Another. Awful movie. Not a drop of the class other Anderson movies have. Everybody is fighting to make the picture better (well deserved Sean Penn) but the movie is stronger than them all. Dicaprio in auto mode. Solid performance but I'm glad they didn't give him the Oscar for this one when they denied it for way better performances that deserved it.

Sinners was never great but the way people try to gaslight me and themselves into thinking this movie is absolutely incredible is hilarious.

Michael B. Jordan best actor, best screenplay, best cinematography, get the fuck outta here.

Yeah, Marty Supreme robbed. Could've had best original screenplay at least.
In a way, it getting a bunch of nominations and then not winning any is a very Marty Supreme result.

In the grand scheme of things award shows don't really mean a huge amount. But where they can be useful is highlighting films for people to check out. So if you have been a bit out of touch with films recently then those shortlists can be good guides to go by.

People were gaslighting themselves? And doing it over a movie?

I must have watched a different movie or have poor taste, because I certainly didn't see MBJ doing anything amazing in Sinners that is worthy of best actor.

I thought he gave a good performance but Chalamet's in Marty Supreme was much better and I probably would have put DiCaprio, Moura and Hawke ahead of him too. I guess the twin gimmick worked in his favour.

I couldn't tell his two characters apart. They looked the same and behaved the same - that's not exactly an acting masterclass.

Sinners stumbled at the goal line. The klan should have come during the night and been killed by the Vampires to give meaning to the leader's offer to join. Every moment of the film laid the groundwork for that to happen. Randomly switching to a "kill racists" 202x ending felt out of place.

I also love how the "best picture" is a movie that completely bombed at the box office and lost the studio like 100 million dollars.

What are we even doing here?

I was talking about this to a friend and realised I felt more strongly about Sinners not winning best picture than any of the nominees actually winning it.

None of the big nominees: Marty Supreme, OBAA, Sinners felt amazing to me. But I thought Marty Supreme was easily the most enjoyable.

I wonder if Chalamet's comments about Opera and Ballet really made anyone change their vote.

Glad that Sinners won something, it would have been years of moaning if it hadn't.

Overall a fairly meh year for the Oscars, imo. Glad that Weapons (have I repetitively told you that I think it's the best film of the year yet?) got a nod though.

My "this is bullshit" moment of the evening was Sinners winning Best Cinematography

It's not a bad looking movie, but Train Dreams was something else. Every shot from that movie was like a painting. Completely robbed.

Every other cathegory was ok. OBAA wasnt my favorite movie of the year but I get it. And PTA should have won before, so I'm glad for him.

Now an Oscar winning song, bet you feel dumb for dropping K-Pop Demon Hunters and letting Netflix grab it up huh Sony?

They don't, it really wouldn't have been the success it became without netflix, it had a very slow burn (~2 months) before becoming actually popular through word of mouth.

I don't understand all the hype over One Battle After Another -- I thought it was a good movie, but I (personally) found Frankenstein to be a way better / more compelling movie.

Sinners didn't deserve the nom at all, imo. I thought Sinners was a B+ movie at best.

Michael B. Jordan? he is the same guy in all films, he barely even acts.

If Train Dreams and Marty Supreme did better at the box office they would sweep.

Lol at the k-pop song getting the oscar. The singers who sung it can't carry a note, like listening to a chalkboard.

Agreed. It wasn't a bad performance, just nothing mind blowing.

The twin gimmick was done better by Tom Hardy in Legend.

I'll try to watch One Battle again sometime again i guess. I found it so insufferable that i don't think i even made it 20 minutes.
It's 2/3 of a great film. The first act is genuinely pretty hard to watch, which is a problem when your film is about 3 hours long, and the bad part is probably the first 50 minutes.

Timmy probably losing his shit this morning. Dude wants that Oscar badly 😄. I guess he'll have to play a blind chess player suffering from cancer during the holocaust to finally nab one!

Or a ballet dancer/opera singer.

Funny, only Oscar-movie I've seen is KPOP Demon Hunters. The struggles of a girl's father ...

So glad I recorded this so I could fast forward to the categories I was interested in.

I sound like a nostalgic fool but we don't have movie stars anymore.
The last one for me is Tom Cruise.

Used to get excited about seeing the likes of Nicholson, Hackman, Streep, Pacino, Hepburn, Eastwood etc...

Gone are those days.

I guess I'm in the minority here (heh, get it?) but I loved Sinners. There were subtle differences in the ways Smoke and Stack acted and the juke joint scene with Miles Caton was mesmerizing!

I get that many of y'all didn't get it or weren't enjoying it and think it's a From Dusk til Dawn rip-off (it's not) ... But in some ways it reminded me of The Color Purple... A movie that got robbed that year.

I think most liked Sinners, it was a solid movie, but the vampires were lame and half of the film tried to play off a sense of tension with the vampires that never happened. And there were some awkward and stiff scenes, some of those in the barn are c-actors and it shows.

I think it's like F1, solid and a good time, but that's it. In a normal year it shouldn't have been nominated, but this year is the worst in modern movie history.

Michael B. Jordan was bare minimum, he was solid, but the small differences in the brothers is bare minimum of what he needed to do. Almost all the other actors on that list schooled him. This is the opposite of Color Purple, this is people getting what they don't deserve. He won it because of the buzz around Sinners, not his skill.

Everyone disagrees with you, your ears are filled with wax, or just broken.
Wasn't this the actress from EastEnders that was stabbed to death (in real life) by her partner some years back ?

I've seen the gif a few times now.

I really liked it too. It might not have been my personal pick for Best Picture but if I was making a shortlist it would absolutely be on there.

And while I might not have picked Michael B Jordan for Best Actor I do think he's great. He ticks a lot of the boxes of what you want from a movie star where both men and women like him, he's got believability when it comes to action, has charm and humour and can actually act too. Like you said it's a great cast too. I had expected it to get the Best Casting Oscar.
