What a weird cunt.

White middle aged bloke complaining about… white middle aged blokes.

What doesn't he fuck off and give his job to a POC / female or whatever it identifies as if he's that upset…

If I'm being honest my only concerns would be controls not feeling right on controller, if so I hope my edge can help with that.

The other issue is I do think sometimes too big isn't always better, as long as there's stuff to find and quests, exploration tho that fills things out not a problem but hopefully there's plenty to see and do.

If the combat is too convoluted that's also a problem but I can adapt, just depends... I think dragons dogma had some wonky ass combat but I still loved it.

For me those are the only things that could hurt my crimson boner, but I'm ready to roll... If it sucks oh well it isn't the first time I bought a game and wasn't happy, and wont be my last... All part of being a gamer.

I wish we could get into it right now

I like everything about the game except the pipe dreams mini-game to defeat every enemy. Seems like that's going to get old REALLY fast.
Knowing Capcom they will either stop it just in time before it gets too repetitive, or find multiple ways to mix it up.

I have never really doubted them when it comes to fun core game design. Their only issue lately has been open world optimization.

Maybe. I think the demo is as brief as it is for a reason. I do love the interplay between Hugh and Diana and I want to support new IP, but Capcom doesn't do it for me these days. That's not to say that there games are bad or close to it, just that they don't hit the same highs anymore.

Dark Souls boss fights then or nah?

To be honest, I just wanted a 150+ hour Skyrim / Cyberpunk fuck around at my own leisure bit of stealth here, all guns blazing there but if it's going to be boss fights learning moves, parrying, blocking, think you've done the fucker only for it to have a second or third form etc effectively blocking me off progressing (cos I'm shit at those games) then I'm gonna have to skip it. Which is a shame.

I'm still waiting on Steam to make my decision. I've seen games like Days Gone get a 71 meta, but is a 92% on Steam. I tend to side with Steam user reviews over critics historically.

Greg gave it a 5/10 with ~20 hours playtime and has dropped the game.
Blessing gave it a 6/10 with ~15 hours playtime.

See? How can anyone come to a decision based on that? They haven't even gotten started with the game.

I don't know. I saw some video reviews. I think it will be fine. Based on how I play games it will be me playing this in between other games, but playing a large chunk of it over the next few days exclusively.

If you spend 20 hours in a game and don't like it to that point, I think it's perfectly reasonable to give a decision. Any game where you have to wait 50+ hours to enjoy isn't a good game.

Steam reviews are binary though. A game can be just okay, but if it runs well, looks good, and has a minimal amount of bugs, there's no real reason not to give it a simply positive reviews.

A 5-10 point scale on Steam would be more telling.

Did any reviewer answer the question of whether it's a truly new thing or merely an attempt to salvage whatever Pearl Abyss had come up with over the years of running Black Desert Online? That's the only question bothering me, I can't fully trust their promises.

In fact, are reviewers even aware that this game comes from a MMORPG developer?

I agree to an extent, but historically I've agreed with every 85% or higher Steam reviewed game I've ever played. Stellar Blade is the only exception. It's got a 95% Steam review. Granted I only played the demo, but it felt like a mid game with hot girls. Maybe it gets better, but the demo wasn't good. That's the only game I can think of that had fairly good Steam reviews that I disagreed with. I've lost count of the amount of times I've disagreed with Metacritic reviews.

I spend 7 hours on the demo and it NEVER got old.

In fact I got so efficient at the hacking I could do it while mid air.

I have been checking out a ton of different impressions and reviews. This is what I'm seeing so far (this is me summarizing by the types of games people say they like and when they compare them to CD):

  • MMO fans = Love it
  • Dragon's Dogma fans = Love it
  • Breath of the Wild/ToTk fans = like it enough so far but want to see more sandbox depth
  • Ubisoft fans = like it but mixed on puzzles and obtuse parts
  • Skyrim fans = like the sandbox elements and exploration, but mixed on everything else
  • ARPG fans = somewhat mixed but action seems ok
  • Souls fans = mixed (like boss fights and secrets/discoverables, don't like the quest presentation)
  • Action JRPG fans = (haven't seen enough impressions from them to know)
  • Witcher fans = dislike
  • Dragon Age fans = dislike
  • Any Story-first RPG fans = dislike

I think this game will be much, much better a year from now.

I'll wait for the "beta testers/users" to provide feedback and fix the hundreds of issues. Nothing new, buying a mega sand-box on launch day has been a risky move for players for years.

The modern gamer:

"We don't want GaaS! Just give us single player games!!"

A big AAA single-player game releases:

"8/10!? WTF is this? lol. Not buying this trash. Preorder cancelled."

The game started as a MMO before shifting to single player, and reviews definitely make it seem the MMO foundation is quite evident.

Some will enjoy that aspect but others despise it.

I love single player games, but the reviews have made me realize I probably wouldn't enjoy it much.

Finally, someone using mouse & keyboard. Every single video I've watched so far has been by someone using a controller. Even through a video, the game immediately seems less tedious.

it appears to be a big 'make your own fun' (aka 'choose your own adventure') game. so: the less attached you are to stuff like story, character, lore, charm, personality, & art style, & the more you're basically in it for the exploration, mechanics, & to just fuck around & find out, the greater the chance you'll have a very good time...

Video is worth watching for more than just the impression/review by the way. He reveals some systems that other reviewers never found (probably because they are rushing through while ForceGaming seems to be playing this at a slower, more immersive pace) and goes over them.

For example you can tame a pet (cat, dog, whatever) and it will auto loot for you and help you find loot sort of like the dog in Fable 2 and 3.

Another example, the healing item system. One reviewer said health potions are rare, but ForceGaming found out that you simply have to engage with the game's cooking mechanic and that is how you can not only prep for battle with buffs but also heal. Due to that it makes the fishing and cooking side content more meaningful.

+Love the sound that its hard and unforgiving

+Riding around in the world seems amazing.

-Hate forced repeates voicelines (like in Witcher 3 every fucking time you rode into town)

?Concerned about review waying its not living up the power fantasy, you wont become the ultimate warrior.

Thanks - I'm a little bit from various bullet points

Skyrim - yeah cool
Witcher - yeah - not so cool.
Dark Souls - nah - worried about that element

I just don't want to be trying to batter someone for 20 minutes use all my health etc only for whomever I'm fighting to get back up in a second form and have all their health back and one hit fucking kill me as that stuff boils my piss. Not about getting good - am getting old lol and don't have hours to be stuck in the same fucking area for days on end.

Is there perhaps a story mode setting, normal, hard and hardcore options upon starting or is it just you'll play it how we (developers) see fit? General question, not aimed specifically at you.

If it's true, I won't like it at all 😅.

Whenever a game doesn't feature that garbage, (Stellar Blade, Astro Bot, this game), all of a sudden, the story is the most important thing about a video games instead of "is it fun".
Literally no one criticized Astro Bot for its utter lack of story, what the fuck are you even talking about.

Watch the ForceGaming video above. He explains a ton of systems. He pretty much explains that you have to prep for boss fights. This means working on your cooking skill to make meals and potions for buffs and healing, and also upgrading your gear (this game works by gear strength instead of character level), amongst other side content you can do to improve your character.

Also you can come back to challenge a boss later if you feel that you are too weak for it or if the fight is taking far too long. The bosses are essentially treated like gatekeepers (he didn't elaborate further but it sounds like enemies in the next area are harder so if you beat the boss then you can handle the next area's enemies).

Before launch: Hype, graphics. After launch: Hype receeding, questionable gameplay. It is easy to get caught up in the moment and the hype.

It seems like myself (and many others) were pretty on the money, a jack of all trades but master of none.

At least it runs, which is alot more than we can say about most AAA games.

Ill wait ps plus/gamepass or heavy sale

Didn't realize the IGN review isn't even included yet in the 78 Metacritic. If it stays a 6 when finalized, the average may drop slightly. Obviously 78 is still a decent average but much like Starfield/Metroid Prime 4, it is disappointing considering the hype pre-release. Pearl Abyss stock price took a 30% hit immediately after reviews were posted.

Been quite awhile since all major reviews were PC based on a major multiplatform release. I wonder how many PS5 reviews will even happen in coming weeks. Perhaps just the Sony centric sites like Push Square.

Yep, a lot of the negatives i have seen are around a few common themes - difficulty, lack of tutorial-izing, lack of hand-holding, clunky menus - all of which can simply be attributed to a learning curve.

But a lot of the reviewers i trust have been very positive on it, which seems to be the same impression you got. I have summarized my observations here:
Thats Good Donald Glover GIF

With Ubishit having garbage like "Canon mode" for people literally too stupid to do the bare minimum of paying attention to the fucking story, the more we see of this, the better.

Same score as metroid prime 4, holy fucking piece of shit.

And those amazing visuals will be played for 1% of pc users

another video review of someone who seems to really enjoy it. This guy was really into BG3 so enjoys heavy systems based games. He shows off some attention to detail on the fishing which is pretty cool

Seems like NPC's don't really have a 24h day cycle. I think they ported a lot of stuff from Black Desert. They even brought back the hot air balloon.
Still impressive what they pulled as the world looks even more massive than I initially thought it would.

2026 with this and GTA VI

Nobody in this thread is talking about the controls; everyone is saying they're clunky, heavy, and imprecise.

It doesn't matter if the game is as difficult as Elden Ring if the input is faulty. I can play Elden Ring, even though it's a challenging game, but if the controls are bad, the game is useless.v

I've only checked one review (khraze gaming or something) and it feels mostly inline with how I thought the game will turn out to be.

The biggest turn off is the combat against bosses. The few shown in the review seemed too flashy for me, both from Cliff's and the bossess' side.

I am also the type of person to ignore most of these optional systems in these kinds of games, which might mean a gimped character when it comes to levels/damage dealt. We'll see.

It's because people need to figure out how much of it is remappable and how involved the learning curve is. And even if some of it isn't in-game, every gaming OS has system-level button remapping anyway. And even on top of that, they are patching reviewer complaints/issues in this game extremely fast, like the recent inventory size patch.

The controls are imprecise, regardless of the learning curve.

Playing with a gamepad is a nightmare.

It's not about the difficulty, but about making a game that's uncomfortable to play.

We're confusing difficulty with having to perform acrobatics to control the character.

?
I disagreed with that piece back in the day, but it has absolutely nothing to do with the game's story. It's specifically about its general presentation and other unrelated implications.
Sorry, you are not using Astro Bot for your bullshit.
No, it's not bullshit just because your feelings are hurt. You're either functionally illiterate or you're playing stupid. The author literally complains about the story being nonexistent.
