NateTheHate has been a trusted, unofficial source for the Nintendo community for a long while, frequently and accurately spilling the tea on Nintendo Directs and the exact random afternoon that the Switch 2 would be properly unveiled. He's now dished out on things he's heard about the best Final Fantasy ever made (I don't make the rules.)

"The last update I had on it is that the game is still on ice," the leaker said in a recent NateTheHate podcast episode. "Now, 'on ice' with Square Enix could mean they may return to it one day, but as far as I've heard there's been no new movement with it. Hopefully, one day, Square Enix returns to it and we may see a Final Fantasy 9 remake come to light."

Shame, ff9 is one of peak/primetime mainline entries and given how psx version performed(20fps durning fights, sometimes even worse) it really needs if not even full on remake then at the very least 4k60fps hd texture pack remaster.

Those character renders in the OP picture are terrible. I really hope if they're remaking it, they keep the fantastical art style instead of trying realistic human proportions.

Agreed.

Those renders would work for a FFVIII remake, but not IX.

I feel like with IX they just need to keep it simple. Maybe something in the same style as Octopath Traveler.

Play the PC version with Memoria and its included mods. Wish granted.

As for the topic. Quite honestly for the above reason not really anticipating the remake. FFIX is a timeless game.

I'd rather still have a FFVII remaster as for me its still the Final Fantasy that has aged the worst out of all Final Fantasy games.

FFI-VI all have good looking 2D versions. VIII and IX are consistent in their art style and modded up still look great. X, XII, XIII, XV and XVI all look beautfiul in their own way.

But VII? It has 3 different art styles for Field/Battle/CGI. And the CGI ones aren't even consistent between FMV's. A lot of that has to do that its development is connected the SNES, the N64 and the Playstation. It's a result of a technical mess, not artistic vision. And its to a point where this isn't fixable with mods.

And this isn't a rant against the reimagened Remake trilogy (Where they btw. NAILED the artstyle, which makes it all the more painful). I don't need another highly produced remake. I just want a technically and artistically polished version of the original.

Only 7 had the impact to warrant a 'AAA' (for want of a better term) remake imo.

Last I read, FF10 had become the highest selling FF game...

The Final Fantasy X series (including X, X-2, and the HD Remaster) has sold over 20.8 million units worldwide as of September 2021.

I doubt it was ever being worked in any real capacity. We've had rumours for 6 years about it being in development and haven't even seen a single piece of concept art. Keep in mind Square announced FF7R with a trailer before they had started working on it. KH4 had a trailer 4 years ago. I can't imagine this is the only game they'd been working on at Square that they decided to keep secret.

Square have been releasing a shitton of FFIX related products. This alone is proof that they have been working really hard on it for some time and there was an planned period to make all these releases be with the game, even the anime series. They didn't released anything about FFVIII be it an anniversary or anything else.

Also please, tell me what unnanounced games have you been seeing concept arts, because you're just making up things now.
