Saros Hands-On Previews

Nex Machina was self-published by Housemarque, hence the day one PC release as well. It failed spectacularly, which is a travesty (seriously, if twin-stick shooters are your thing and you haven't played it, shame on you). Hence Returnal was kind of "make it or break it" moment for the studio. Glad that it went well for them, but if it wasn't for the Sony investment (and later acquisition), the studio would be probably dead by now.
No, it wasn't. Nex Machina was self-published by Housemarque when they were independent. They also released a PS4 exclusive (even to this day) published by Sony two months later, Matterfall.

I stand corrected.

In a sea of Sony published games, you can see how I could mistake it or forget

Holy Shit this gameplay is fire!!! Mini boss fight at 8:00 looks phenomenal

Yea that boss fight is really fucking cool. As someone with like 80 hours in Nex Machina, this actually seems to split the difference between Returnal and Nex Machina a bit. The boss patterns etc. are even more Nex Machina-ish.

Gameplay and level design looks top tier as expected.

Looks damn incredible. I love the mechanics of firing projectiles back at enemies and how it seems to crank everything I loved about Returnal to 11. Just hope they make it even more difficult to balance out all accessibility features

I bought Returnal on PS5 originally and then on PC later. It played and looked so good on PC. With Sony apparently pulling out of PC ports, that makes me sad for Saros.

Yeah, I'll play it on the Pro but Sony essentially killed Housemarque for me. I've played all their games going back to the Amiga days, now it'll end after this one. 😕

The port begging from pcmr is getting embarrassing 🤣

Yup, the port begging dressed up as concern trolling is a PCMR special trait. The bigger the GPU you have the better you get at it. Considering the pathetic sales of Nex Machina, Dead Nation and Returnal on PC, the only thing keeping Housemarque's doors open is Sony's investment and PS gamers. Valve is just a parasite taking 30% cut for nothing and I have no idea what gives PC gamers the entitlement to feel 'sad' for Saros or Housemarque. If you are so sad, just get a PS5 and Saros, that will 'rescue' Housemarque and it will cost lesser than a 5070.

Not worth it to buy for just one game.

It can be THE main system. But then a lot comes into consideration.

A couple of downsides of PS ecosystem that are stopping me:

-Locked into dualsense
-Weird atmosphere around first party releases. They induce hype, but fundamentally can be underwhelming titles.

Buy it, play it, sell it off. Going by the French dude's leak you will still make a profit as the PS5 is only going to increase in price. What's the point of feeling so sad and bad, when those who are feeling so have an easy viable solution to assuage those terrible feelings. Also, dualsense is a perfectly serviceable controller (best haptics and buttons this gen by a country mile).

Not feeling bad for myself. I do feel sad that Sony would miss out on $50 I would have spent on the game. Must be terrible for them.

Buying and selling is not how I do it. Would rather get a PS6 Portable as second system.

Dualsense is fine. But I regularly find pro controllers from Scuf, Razer etc at cheap prices on Amazon. Would rather have those.

Didn't watch any video in this thread because I'm already sold on the game.

The only tunes I've heard was some sort of combat music under the commentary and it was sounding pretty lame with bro guitar and shit. I'm hoping that was the "hype trailer music".
Same here, if this is the case I'll play Saros with the Returnal soundtrack 🤷‍♂️

My intention was to convey that, if given the option, I prefer PC to PS5, and more options is better as a consumer. I bought Returnal on both PS5 and PC, which you can see in my post you quoted.

Not sure who hurt you, but I feel like you're arguing with a version of me that's only in your head.

Just played a bit of Returnal again to get hyped for Saros. I forgot the feeling of losing in the 3rd biome and having to completely restart after 2hrs of play. The brutality of that is unmatched in gaming

I really hope this time they are allowing more permanent character upgrades between runs to make future attempts gradually easier, e.g. like in Hades.

Iirc the only permanent upgrades in Returnal were the weapon levels.

I just hope this game is a better roguelike. The biggest weakness of Returnal was its roguelike elements.
Just watched lukes preview and he said its not even a roguelike, more like an action game... Sigh. So its gonna be easier, probably same lenght(?) and the roguelike elements are still really light. Not sure how i feel about this. 80 euro for a 5-6 hour game thats not really replayable is tough even tho the game looks amazing

And i will miss that dearly. They streamlined saros to get more people onboard, but i still dont think its gonna be a huge seller.

Im still afraid they made it too easy, i didnt find returnal that hard and hearing this is easier makes me a bit sad. Anyway... Really looking forward to play this, because returnal is still the best ps game this gen
My twitch-fu must suck donkey balls, because I've been playing Returnal for nearly 30 hours and still can't get past the first boss… 😔

If you are not fast enough for jumping through or avoiding hits try tanking it. Health bar +50 or 100%. Astronaut figurine and large silphium vials. Weapons with DOT effects. Rotglot Lobber, Electropylon Driver or Hollowseaker with Serrated Projectiles. The DOT gives you time to focus on avoiding attacks especially the melee attacks in the later stages. Try to get (almost) through second stage before the Astronaut figurine revival. If you managed to get a good build for a run, use the revive machine and try again (maybe buy new silphium vials). You can use a portal back to the boss area.

Game will sell fine for its budget. The biggest reason the Returnal numbers weren't great was because it was a PS5 exclusive with only a 25mil user base in 2021. PS5 shortages continued through 2022

Also, don't listen to Luke Stephen's on Saros. He didn't even get through Returnal. He doesn't seem like a fan of the genre. He explains in first minute of video

Don't know why he failed to mention that in his preview to Saros. Or why he bothered to travel all the way to Helsinki for a preview

If they cant do a roguelike well I would rather them lean into being an action game and cut the roguelike stuff completely tbh. In returnal I always picked the same two guns and went for the best strategy there was never a real reason to deviate.

Why? If the gameplay is the exact same and the game looks the same (minus the bump is resolution which is still fine on PS5) what is the issue? Assuming it runs at 60 frames a sec on PS5 what issue is there?
They're just sounding silly.

People need to start facing facts that more of Playstation's games are sticking to Console than being on PC as well. We're in an age to where you just have to have more hardware platforms available in your home so that you can play what you want.

Games sell a lot on PS5 too. The reasons for Returnal not being a best-seller are simple: the genre is niche, mostly occupied by indie or indie-looking games. A very hardcore roguelike with AAA looks is an oddity never made for mass appeal.
Why the fuck do you cut my quote mid sentence?Fuck off with that shit. Saros will most likely be profitable no matter what. Your anger is reason why Sony is moving off PC. Buy a PS5, or do

Dude, what demon got into you? I replied to that specific point on why you can't expect Returnal or Saros being best sellers, no matter their quality.

What anger are you even talking about, chill.

How do you feel about comparing Returnal to something like Hades? People couldn't stop talking about that game and as of today generated over $8mil in sales. I tried it but was never into it enough to play it through more than 2 hours.

Hades is easier and runs are shorter (talking about Hades 1, I haven't played Hades 2). Progression feels faster and that creates an addictive game loop. Besides, beautiful hand drawn art style helps a lot for global appeal.

I'd have preferred Returnal being something like Metroid. It has the right vibes and exploring an eerie alien planet would have been awesome. To me, it's a better game than Hades, but I understand why it sold so much less.

Fuck any person who quotes someone out of context. You literally quoted me mid sentence. Fuck off

They are doing good with Returnal.

I didn't care about Returnal and playing as the contrived bad ass grandma.

This does look cooler but not enough to pay full price.

Idk why they picked this barely known shitty actor as the model too. Oh well, it could have been worse, it could have been Kumail Nanjiana.

Dont worry, they saved him for ND new game with the bald cunt.

Why the fuck did they hired a shitty tv actor for the protagonist tho?

That's a waste of money for a game like this imo.

NOBODY is gonna buy the game because that dude is the protagonist.

This may be the weird question I've seen this year about a game. Like WTF is going on lately on GAF?

Just played a bit of Returnal again to get hyped for Saros. I forgot the feeling of losing in the 3rd biome and having to completely restart after 2hrs of play. The brutality of that is unmatched in gaming

Hold on......I thought Returnal got updated so that this wouldn't happen anymore..... :(

PC or no buy, and yes I have a PS5.

Music Video Wtf GIF

They are doing good with Returnal.

Not surprised that no one on GAF has responded to this yet. We like to stay ignorant. Thanks for the data though. It's great that they've been profitable for 6 years straight.
