Proton 11 finally adds ARM64 support for Linux ARM.

What will Sony do if other manufacturers fully adopt ARM architecture? In this case AMD's chips will become obsolete.

Cool tech, but I just want it to run games without 20 layers of translation
Then run to Rockstar, Ubisoft, Sony, EA, Microsoft, etc and convince them to waste money making ARM/Android/iOS ports of all the big AAA games.
Translation is the future.

Dont think this is considered "native" since it is a translation layer like with Proton. But no.....seriously doubt you'lll be able to do this on iphone or ipad. Macs, more than likely, at some point

Is apple still forced to allow Europeans to install whatever on their phones?

It's beautiful to see arm gaming going so far. I've always been a handheld enjoyer and this feels very vindicating that every sector of tech is scrambling to make ARM processors more capable and powerful.
We'll be playing Crimson Desert on GBA-sized handhelds in half a decade if this progress keeps. Bonus points if Nvidia really gets into making arm processors.

As cool as this is I wonder if Valve will eventually piss off publishers with their pro consumer shenanigans. If I can slap a controller attachment on my cheap ass android tablet and play all my Steam games why would I buy this mobile version of your game.
I don't know what they could do other than bitch.

If over the next few years Valve get this translation to ARM to function as well as Proton did a few years after the Steam Deck launch...enough people will start to shift over to buying from Steam to have their game purchases available on more devices, and Steam > Google Play Store from just a shopping/discovery platform for games.

Apple will never allow other games run of their devices.
Apple doesn't really have a choice. If Proton can do for OSX what it did for Linux those M5s are going to be VERY interesting. MBP would become the best mid to high level gaming laptop overnight.

They are doing their very best to delay it by not support Vulkan. Kronos Group is developing MoltenVK which translates Vulkan calls to Metal.

This keeps Apple PCs from just working like one would expect with Proton.

Yeah, Apple support is gonna be tougher, and likely worse performance overhead. Gotta translate the instruction set from x86 to ARM, and do two translations to get from DirectX to Metal.

Hopefully the App Store Freedom Act gets passed through congress in the US to impose Apple to open up third-party storefronts like the EU and Japan.

How long before Steam is a default app on TV's? Perhaps you buy a tv that has an optional slot for an SSD that you can pop in and you are ready to go with a controller and a keyboard? I know that Samsung has Smart Monitors so maybe Steam could show up there as well.

Ah. I didn't know any specifics as to what was slowing them down. The complete absence of Vulkan will certainly do it though. Hopefully they work it out. I'm in the laptop market and from what I can tell MBP is the only sane option. Just based on how it performs in other workloads, it certainly seems like it would be a beast in gaming.

This seems pretty big too me.

ARM is just pretty damn efficient....

This with a Snapdragon Elite 8 would be pretty sweet. Like a AYN Odin 3.

Apple does pretty decently already with CrossCode but hopefully the performance will improve. M5 MacBook Pros should have even better performance vs now considering how they do in other apps.

Kind of wish Steam was available on modern iPads. M4/M5 iPads are crazy powerful for what they are. Maybe Eurobros can live the dream! 😅

I've tried gamehub with Proton and Fex on my Pixel 6a, to play my Steam games, some time ago. Some games worked out of the box but most of the others didn't work at all.

Great to see the progress for Linux and ARM gaming getting increasingly fast.

The moment this happens, that's it. Gaming platforms will have been solved. steam will become the new doom- ran on anything with an arm processor and graphical compute. Counter strike on all screens. All gamers from all walks of life can enjoy their steam library from wherevee on whatever. This is going to be so lit.

Are ARM-based handhelds cheaper than x86-based ones? It could open the door for a broad range of affordable consoles!

That's mostly because of the GPU hardware. ARM CPUs are noticeably cheaper but not enough to really offset the massive expense of graphical compute.
You can see this in gaming PCs, the most expensive component is never the CPU but the graphics card. A lot of arm devices are cheaper because snapdragons don't have super powerful graphics. Nvidia might change this but then you'll be paying a pretty penny for their hardware

Do we really need top-tier graphics in handhelds though? For me, a handheld is an indie powerhouse first and foremost.

Well that's kind of the state we're in right now I'd say. Even with oncoming price increases AYN Odin is the best handheld on the market not made by Nintendo or Valve and it goes for 320. For what you get that's a steal and it's capable of playing plenty of PC indies with increasing compatibility on the way.

I'm just discussing in the future, as in when these get good enough to meet the capabilities of dedicated home game systems and even surpass their power.

I've got the Steam app on my iPhone, I can buy games using the app. I just can't install and play the games...... yet.
Apple has a new CEO, maybe this guy will be more into games.

You can't even use native apps like xCloud, Geforce Now or other streaming services. That would indicate that native gaming on third party stores are far away.
