Is Directive 8020 another woke Slop?

I'm gonna get something else off my chest. Just because I'm not personally into gay relationships or themes in entertainment doesn't mean I hate gay people.

I'm straight. I'm attracted to women, and that naturally influences the kind of shit I connect with. So when a game leans heavily into themes I don't personally relate to, I'm highly likely not gonna be interested in that shit.

At the same time, I can understand that people on the other end want representation and stories they connect with too. I don't give a flying fuck about developers making those themes available to you. Personally I actually encourage it. There's a big difference between "this content isn't for me" and hating people. There's also a major difference between optional content and mandatory content, and I think a lot of the industry backlash comes from developers not understanding how to properly execute those two.

I agree with the sentiment, but want to add a little remark that applies to this game and also to the Saros controversy.

Inserting certain themes is perfectly fine in games like Life is Strange or in a life sim RPG.

However, this is a sci-fi horror. It's completely out of genre to have even a glimpse of that stuff in it. The same with Apotheon, the Dontnod game. The social commentary is out of place and makes it stand out for the wrong reasons.

I agree. Now, if the "reminds me of my husband" line actually leads into something important, like discovering an alien is mimicking his husband's personality and that's how they realize someone on the ship is an impostor, then cool. That's good writing because it ties directly into the story and the paranoia theme.

I don't care if a character is gay. Just make it meaningful to the plot or the character instead of feeling randomly inserted.

I mean, the game is in space and scifi setting right? Isn't it just easier and less maintenance to have short hair in space? With all the low gravity and space suits long hair would get stuck all the time. Have you seen the tv series The Expanse? Almost all females have short hair there too.

Completely agree that there's ways to do this. The pushback happens when it feels like the game is trying to teach the player a "lesson" rather than it being just.. organic.

The most extreme case of this for me has been Dragon Age Veilguard where the entirety of Taash's existence comes off as trying to teach me a moral lesson. "Look shes trans and its okay and look at how much stuff she has to deal with". In a game about Dragons and the potential end of the world - it comes off as so shallow and forced, cringy and really out of place. It's a terribly written character that shouldn't have a place in a game like that. Granted the game has a lot more problems than just that.

If you want to tell a story like that then fair enough. I'm sure there's plenty of meaningful ones to tell but they have to do a better job in picking when and where to tell it.

I'd also add that if someone wants to tell a story like that, leave it out of established IPs - especially since it seems to always be at odds with the lore and world. Supermassive built their own game world/IP to tell their story which is what I want to see over IPs being hijacked to teach all of us about some dev's ideology and world view. Dragon Age Veilguard is, imo, an example of the latter. It was co-opted by activists which resulted in a failed game and most likely a permanent shelving of the IP. A very sad ending for the series.

This is 100% woke, and since it's primarily story driven not something that I'm into. But the modern audience does exist. They could easily pull them and do fine. Not every game is for me.

And the same exact thing with Last of Us 2. Ellie was already gay and more or less had a great dlc diving into her character but here comes Abby with another "message"

We've all failed to bully theater kids sufficiently over the past few decades, and now we're suffering the consequences. If you're young, please take some time to do so, and to instill in them properly that the sum total of their feelings and perspectives on the world have no merit or value whatsoever, thanks in advance.

Just wanted to pop in and say congrats to Gonzito Gonzito for finding a type of thread that will get him instant engagement.

It's like winning the lottery of threadmaking, and I'm sure some other weekly threadmakers out there who look for the same engagement are jealous of this.

A fair set of points, well said. And that's the problem with games. Developers are worried about checking boxes instead of making the games make sense to the content they are trying to fulfill.

There is so many more historically accurate stories about black people all across the world that can probably be made to be cool. What happens is countries like America have pretty much raised the tide for all cultures because we are the ones driving industry and then sometimes developers try to push story with people that don't make sense and then you get into stuff like history being changed which we've seen all over movies and television these days.

Make a Black panther game or something with AAA values and if it's not meant to sell and there's no market then don't make any more. But then they shoe horn racial or current cultural pushes like needing to make sure we know if they're queer or what pronouns they have.

If properly executed make a game for just those people because there's probably a good game somewhere that just has those people in it without needing to advertise it or make a story to let you already see the obvious. And it doesn't need to be about how everybody's racist or trying to push a message because constantly talking about it gets everybody tired of it because you're never going to change cultures.

You can't go to African countries and expect them to make content and movies about white people and then criticize them for not doing so. Just like you have other countries that are of a higher ethical background such as white, if the games make sense and they have supporting cast or if the character makes sense then let it be whatever race it may be. But you horny female characters that don't even fit the bill for gamers or changing the sexes of historically accurate races to fit some gender or racial quota just never wins.

And then you get those people that will rate a game higher or something in entertainment higher because it checks some boxes instead of the content and merit of which it should be judged on. Gaming and movies and entertainment have been getting worse and these are some parts of the equation on top of just giving everybody a platform to put out what they want and you just have a ton of crap and you got a shift through all of it to see what's actually good.

I'm sure people remember the phrase let the cream rise to the top. Good stuff will always be noticed just like some artists were discovered sitting in gas stations that became famous.

This isn't a very thought out or I sat on my desk for 30 minutes thing. I'm driving home using the voice recognition and I'm just not sure about where things are going when you have the wrong intentions when making games versus what they used to be made for, just be fun.

Supermassive games is a British studio and usually British tv shows and stuff have regular looking actors and actress, they even have agencies for unique looking artists.

British media usually focus more on talented actors/actresses and if they have unique faces that's seems to be a perk, contrary to the focus on the current beauty standards that we see on USA or Korea for examples.

He self-appointed himself, as some kind of champion. All it seems to me is a guy, begging for attention with baity, low hanging fruit.

Why do you attack me for pointing out something that its objectively detrimental and harmful for videogames?

I don't understand you guys, instead of debating and challenge my position, you go straight to attack me.

I am just a concern citizen for this hobby man, that's all.

Who the fuck calls a game woke before playing it? Just because you don't like the art. You literally know nothing about the game except the characters are ugly. Why don't you play it and give some actual feedback instead of being little drama queens?
you can only say shit like this seriously if you have the iq and pattern recognition ability of a retarded gerbil

How about checking out REAL LIFE astronauts? You know, those exist too.

No, they are not monstrosities like the ones in this game. They don't need to be.

This is funny because the first one would be considered the perfect one, the second one would be the woke DEI masculine female and the third one would be the DEI woke blue haired fat designer slop.

Concord after Concord, it's insane. …I mean, they probably would've flopped either way (given the exact game), with the difference being that no one would be making fun of them. But maybe they like being made fun of.... They like being the victims, after all. That's how they justify their failure

Because what you consider "woke" is no longer make sense to me.

According to your criteria what is "woke" and what is not games like Trails 1st Chapter is "woke" heck even games like Unicorn Overlord, Dragon Quest XI and SMTV also can be considered "woke".

I no longer understand meaning of word "woke". It seems you just throw that word at everything you dont like.

I dont care if it is woke or not, I respect the devs.

They looked at the economy and say "Lets make our game an easy skip for the gamers', so they created a game aimed to the journos and terminally online people that will probably never gonna buy it/play it.

You have to admire the commitment

I think she looks great.

I have not played it yet but will need to play it to verify if it is woke.

I can confirm The Quarry was not woke and was very good to me.

The sports bra screenshot is definitely wtf but maybe it looks better in motion.
"Maybe the dude in the sports bra looks better in motion" 🤣 I think I know what you really meant, well what you hopefully meant.
