Would be a very interesting change for the series if true.

Yoshinori Kitase, producer of Final Fantasy XIII-2, has hinted that the next iteration of Final Fantasy could see it drift away from its turn-based roots and be an action-RPG.

In an interview, Kitane told us that the increasing popularity of action-RPGs compared to their turn-based equivalents represented "a trend…you ignore at your peril."

"I think the nature of the franchise is to present something new each time," Kitase said. "In the global market we see many players moving away from games that used turn-based systems toward what you might term an action-RPG.

"That's a trend, and you ignore things like that at your peril."

Kitase went on to say that changes introduced in Final Fantasy XIII showed that the series was moving forward with each iteration - but left the door wide open for more subtantial changes to be made in the next full game in the series.

"FFXIII and FFXIII-2's battle systems have those elements of speed and action that are the key words for us, though that doesn't necessarily mean we're going to stick to the same route in our next game," he said. "That's something only time can tell."

It's great that SE finally gets that their game names are extremely confusing and convoluted but calling a game "action RPG" is just a bit too simple.

Not at all interested. They have an action RPG series, and Type-0 went that way and and Versus is going that way too, which is cool, but abolition of the command RPG style completely is not something I want.

I wasn't going to post this because I think the question itself is terrible... so here's my thoughts instead:

Asking about a game that's not even announced is fairly rude and shows you don't care about games the developers are actually working on. Final Fantasy Versus XIII and XIV relaunch haven't even happened yet, so if anything, these journalists need to stop prodding about things that don't even exist.

Yes, I realize the irony in that I myself have done interviews with the FF development staff, but I would never ask them something this dumb.

Xenoblade already stole your thunder, Squeenix.

Isn't FFXIV an action RPG, the online aspect of it notwithstanding?
It's an action-RPG in about the same capacity as World of Warcraft.

Unfortunate, but expected.

But yeah, it's not like FF games are anything like the NES/SNES games these days anyway, so it's not really such a big change.

why would they ask about something that was never announced when XIII-2 ain't even out. neither is Versus, The Rhythm game or the FFX HD remake? O_o

Edit: nvm beaten

If Xenoblade is an action RPG, so is FF12 (they aren't.)
It's not all or nothing - Removing discrete turns and making positioning matter definitely make the game more "action-y."

I would be SOOOOOOOOO pissed if FF went full on ARPG and dropped turn/command based entirely. Would still take it over pseudo-MMO like FFXII though.

But yeah, this interview means nothing.

This is nonsense. Your responsibility is to ask for what the fans want to hear. Sticking to the PR plan is either lazy, a misguided attempt at being morally upstanding or indicative of a poor understanding of what makes a good interview. You're not there to be buddies with the interviewee.

Why wouldn't they ask..it's hard to look forward to Versus when it's never coming out..so why not look to the future of 15.

Well Rez said it better than me.

We have enough action-RPGs right now.

And pretty much no turn/command based RPGs to look forward to, especially not from Square. I think Bravely Default is literally the only one. What the hell happened :(

They stopped making money.

Hey, there's always DQ10.

...Oh, right...

Hopefully we'll get some kind of turn-based boom. Most likely on 3DS/Vita. (It's going to be Action RPGs forever... T_T)

DQ9? The reaction Japan had to it going ARPG was not pretty. That's why they announced DQ10 so late, so they wouldn't have to change it again even though they know plenty of people aren't happy with the direction.

Really now?

What's so dumb about it, they're discussing the increasing popularity of action RPG's and what does it mean for the franchise. The headline is pretty dumb, but that's just to garner clicks.
