GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

Clipper said:
All of the stuff you want is covered in the tutorial. You no longer need any particular games; there's a working, SD-based softmod for 4.3 Wiis again and it includes instructions on how to avoid disc and online updates.

I have a mission for the night/weekend. Thanks!

Does Skyward Sword even have an update?
I'm not sure yet. I only checked GBATemp long enough the other day to check if people had it going. I can't stand to be there any more, not even checking the Cfg thread like I used to.

I am fairly certain that it only has the 4.3 update on the disc, although it might have some IOS updates too. In any case, the disc is safe to play from what I saw.

I got USB loader installed in my wii and my Wii is not connected to a harddrive. If I left my harddrive in the Wii will it over heat and break?

Also I can't seem to in stall Xenoblade so I was wondering if I could it on computer and transfer it to my Harddrive?

Thanks for the replies. I guess unless DQ X pushes new firmware we're probably done with major revisions then.

I'm a strange one who actually prefers playing off of disks whenever possible as my HD is an old powered one in an enclosure! I basically only use USB loader for games that can improve loads on or out of region games as I don't particularly like the region free loader programs.

I have noticed though that some small sections of the homebrew tutorial are out of date, particularly the part when it comes to ripping/playing dual layered games.

could anyone help me? with my questions two post up?

Yay Multi-quote!

For the first question. I am assuming that you mean connection the hard drive to the wii and not actually putting it inside the wii. If you connect it, all you have to do is make sure that the system is fully shut down to stop the hard drive from running.

Second question. Not that I am aware, you have to use the wii to rip it onto the hdd. What is the issue you are having when trying to install it?
Also have you looked here for a solution: http://gwht.wikidot.com/for-dummies

I get a disc read error. Xenoblade is dual layered so that could be the problem and I want to avoid to shell out and wait for lens cleaning kit. Can it be done on computer?

In what way is it out of date? What's missing?

The only way to rip games on PCs is using DVD drives that are not made any more and are very difficult to find. Your only other option is to do the same things as the pirates do. Many people don't see a problem with this because you have bought he game, but you are supporting the actions of the pirate that uploaded the game, so I personally wouldn't do it, but it's your choice.

So is there any way to rip ISOs instead of wbfs files using CFG USB Loader? I'd like to play my ripped games on Dolphin, but all my rips are wbfs right now and Dolphin doesn't support them for some reason :/

edit: nevermind, found the answer:

If your drive is formatted as NTSC and you add the options ntfs_write=1 and install_partitions=iso, you can use the same rips for both Cfg and Dolphin. Otherwise, you will need to use wbfsfile or another converter or manager app to convert the .wbfs file/s to a .iso.

However, clipper, this isn't in the "Configurable Options" page in the wiki, it should probably be! Also, in the "wbfs to fat", the link is to wbfs_file 2.8, but 2.9 also exists.

Yeah, I know. It's been a long time since I updated those. It takes quite a bit of work to do, unfortunately, so I don't know if I'll be able to get around to it.

Looking for some help here. Just bought Skyward Sword and it's asking for a System Update, even though I am already at 4.3U. If I update for the game, won't it brick my Wii, as I homebrewed it to play Xenoblade some months back?

It won't if you followed the GAF tutorial instead some of the broken guides floating on the interweb.

I did follow it to the best of my ability, and it's still doing this. So where do I go from here? Uninstall Homebrew, and reinstall it after updating my Wii, via Letter Bomb?

EDIT: Sorry, misinterpreted what you said. Okay, I'm going to go ahead and update and we'll see what happens.

A friend asked to homebrew his wii ... and i have to say .... syscheck+modmii is GODLY in wii hacking

Kids these days don't know how rough we had to hack our wiis =P

The only reason why I don't recommend Modmii is that people have no clue what they are installing any more. It also uses the slots that are potentially overwritten or at least attempted to be overwritten by updates.

So can you just not play Skyward Sword off your hard drive? I ripped it to the hard drive but once I go to start it I'm taken back to the channel menu. My disk drive is too finicky to play with the disk but it just won't play from the hard drive either. I followed the guide so I just don't understand the problem.

I haven't gotten around to opening mine yet, so I haven't tried copying to my drive. *Watches thread*

If Wii Sports Resort is any indication the problem might be the Motion+ tutorial movie which is a different dol and needs to be played at least once so it creates a save to be never needed again. Just do that once from the disk, and block ios reload from the hdd.

I installed mine and have had zero issues--quite the opposite, I won't play it from disc because it says I need a system update even though I'm on 4.3U.

Not any more. If you're up to date, you have d2x and IOS Reload Blocking enabled in Cfg (which is the default). With that, there's no more need to use the alternate .dol techniques.

This update would only be to update a few Nintendo IOSes to later versions. I actually recommend you run it once. Provided you are using the setup suggested in the tutorial (d2x in the 248 slot), you won't lose any of your homebrew.

Huh, didn't know that--I am using d2x in slot 248 so I'll give it a go.

Clipper, just wanted to give you a shoutout for all the help you gave me in this thread. What ended up working to unbrick my Wii was using ohnesschwarzenegger (sp?) lol and restoring the NAND that way. My Wii is virgin again but at least I can play now! I felt like shit having Zelda for a day with no Wii to play it. Shoutouts again for helping as much as you did though man, I appreciate it.

I have a Wii with homebrew on it, and I'm fairly certain the firmware is 4.3u, as I believe that's what SMG2 required.

Now I have Zelda, and it's asking me to update the firmware. Can I safely do so, or do I need to do some shenanigans to get it working right?

Btw just curious but if you run SS from USB loader are there any cheats/hacks/whatever else that get rid of some minor legacy annoyances like Z button still unecessarily bringing down extra black bars on top of the forced widescreen, perhaps even disabling the "you got a ___" dialogue for good rather than per session after getting one of each kind and other such things? Or would things like that require extensive modding or iso changes one shouldn't risk due to instability instead of a simple switch?

Yes, you can safely update from Zelda.

As for cheats, I'm not sure. I'm beginning to think SS has something like PoP in that it doesn't run if it detects runtime patches. This would include all cheats, I think. You should check the Gecko Codes site to see what has been worked on so far in case they do work, though.

That site says:
No Screen Minimize While Locking-On [Bully@Wiiplaza]
0419DD4C 60000000

How do I use it, I've never used that feature before ^_^;;

Most of the others seem to be true cheats and stuff like that, I skimmed it because it was potentially spoilery with upgrades listed...

With Cfg, you need to download the cheats, turn that one on, save to .gct, then turn the Ocarina option for the game on and experiment with Hook Types until you find one that works. It may well be the case that none of them work, so good luck.

I've not used the Wii in a while (a year or so) but a few games have recently come out that have caught my eye so im gonna blow the cobwebs off it. I used the GAF Wii guide to install the homebrew channel etc a year ago but after having a quick look at it today, it looks like a few things have changed, mainly not having to use WBFS anymore and the use of D2X for the slot. As i already have everything installed apart from D2X, could i just install this as well as the IOS249 i currently have on or do i need to start from scratch?

You should do everything as the other things have also updated to suit the new firmware and so on.

i have d2x installed like this:

Slot 248 - Base 56 - Compatibility with most games and slightly faster read timing. Definitely use this for games with microphones and Wii Speak.
Slot 247 - Base 57 - Compatibility with many games. Definitely use this with Call of Duty: Black Ops.

as per gaf tutorial. will i have any troubles?

i still have to buy Skyward Sword but will do sooner than later

:)

aw, man; i dont even know what happened.

i had the softmod (4.2? i forget what version; it's old and i did the TP exploit years back) and had USB GX or the like working fine, but of course my new copy of Zelda SS wont work - so using the guide here, i updated IOS 249 & 250, now USB loader doesn't wanna start either. I'm currently playing it on a friend's wii but for some reason it looks crappy even over component, no idea what went wrong here. if it was the external HDD, i wanna say the loader'd still boot up and say so.

any other IOS' i should try? i had a number of titles on said drive, last new game id put on there was prolly mario galaxy 2 though, so i'm at least that current.
really hate to start from scratch, but i will if i gotta.

Nope, that's fine

Cheers Clipper, does that mean i will have to uninstall everything i already have on? If thats the case is there a guide somewhere?
Nope, the GAF tutorial has instructions to update the apps as well. Just use the update steps on each page.

Probably you are trying to apply some sort of patch to the game, or perhaps you are just using an old version of something. Try the game in Cfg with d2x using the Clear Patches = All option.

As for your friend's Wii, has he set the Wii to 480p in the Wii settings?

I've already bought Xenoblade and am intending on playing it after Zelda. Does the LetterBomb hack still work even if I've run the update that comes with Zelda? Am I correct in reading that the Smash Stack exploit no longer works on the current firmware?

The update is not a firmware update, it's an IOS one. Both Letterbomb and Smash Stack should work even if you have run the update.

ah, which loader's CFG? i wanna say i grabbed the d2x versions of those IOS's i mentioned - what exactly do you mean by dx2 with clear patches, though?
and yeah, i checked his wii and oddly it's at 480p, gonna try turning that off and on again, see if it has any effect.

What are like the top 5 things you can do with a modded Wii?

Ive thought about modding mine but just listening to you guys ask if it's "safe" to play a game makes me wonder if it's really worth the hassle.

You can back up your games on a hard drive, which decreases load times and increases laziness. You can also play media off of the drive (my Handbrake-crafted DVD rips work great!), play emulators, and homebrew apps. For example, there's a Quake engine port if you have some Quake assets lying around.

Having just done the deed two weeks ago I can definitely state that the backing-up-the-games thing alone is worth it. Good gravy, load times are like woosh.

Configurable USB Loader. The one that we describe in GAF's Wii Homebrew Tutorial.

Don't worry about the safe comments too much. You just have to be a little wary of what is done to your Wii. If it is updated, you might lose access to homebrew for a while, but will probably eventually get it back. If you are careful, you won't lose access to anything.

I agree with the previous post that USB Loading is the best thing about Wii homebrew. It is just so convenient and easy to switch games. As stated, it also lowers load times and improves many games like the Resident Evil and Dead Space On-Rail Shooters, at least one of which chugs and lowers frame rate when turning corners, yet it plays smoothly from the USB.

My second best use would be the Homebrew Browser, being able to play with a whole bunch of cool, little apps that people have written.

To be honest, I don't really use it for much else. But I dread having to go back to switching discs when the Wii U comes out, given how used I am to USB loading.
