I have my desktop with a 5850 in it at the moment hooked up to 3 monitors. Can I just buy a $30 AMD card and put it in my second pci-express slot and hook up a fourth monitor?

Earlier this year I upgraded my graphics card from a 4850 to 6850, bought a new haf-x case and new alx-850 psu.

Just ordered the rest of the upgrade, i5 2500k, hyper 212 cooler, p8z68 motherboard, 8gb 1600 mhz memory and an extra 6850 for sli. im coming from an e8400 so it should be a huge upgrade

I'm on my cell right now so I don't remember the exact part numbers.

I'm second guessing the second 6850. Is doing sli such a headache? I can return it to amazon if need be. I could just wait until the new graphics cards come out, but I'm going back and forth on it.

Attention non-GAF readers and such.
I've posted a link to reddit for others to provide feedback and input. Maybe you just want to say hi? Or how my builds are awful and how dare I recommend _______ part?
Thread regulars are welcome to submit posts under that reddit, or PM me as usual.

I'd return the second 6850 and go single card since a single card has the ability to be as fast as dual 6850's.

It's worth it in the few games where you need that extra performance (like BF3). However, it adds a lot of additional headaches. Also, I don't think it's worth it at all with lower end cards like the 6850...I'd much rather have one high-end card than two mid-range cards.

But hey, if you can return the card there's not much harm in trying. If you're curious about it, I suggest you get it out of your system now so you can be more at peace with your purchasing decisions in the future. I just had to try it for my current build, and while I don't regret it, I don't think I'll be going dual GPU in the future (though who knows).

I'd sell the existing 6850 and use the total amount to buy a better GPU. Whether or not it's worth it to wait just depends on how well your 6850 is doing for you now. I wouldn't expect prices on new cards to be great when they launch since NVidia isn't going to have anything out for a while.

I'll go ahead and return the 6850. Wait until next generation of cards come out and probably get an NVIDIA card next round. I don't have the patience for troubleshooting that I used to have, especially with computers. The 6850 should be fine for now anyway, I can run most things with my e8400, so with the i5 I shouldn't have much of any problem.

I went ahead and spent the extra for a high quality case and psu so I'll essentially be futureproof on that side.

Thanks guys.

Is there some kind of tacky tape or something I can use to improve the grip on my new mouse?

I had a Logitech G5 for years but when the scroll wheel started acting up, I replaced it with a G500. I liked it well enough at first, but playing Skyrim I realized how much I need to lift and reposition the mouse as I'm moving, looking, or in combat. I find that when I lift the G500 I can't grip the it very well and my thumb seems to slide up the side of it, so I'm constantly respositioning my grip. If I grip it harder, I'm afraid of clicking the side buttons. I don't have any of the weights in it.

Looking at my G5, it had a much more deeply defined "thumb well", where the G500 just has a gentle curve to rest the thumb in. Also the G5 sides had more of a rubberized texture than the G500's gritty plastic. Is there any way I can make the sides of the G500 a little more "grippy"?

My Fortress FT03 came today. Everything else should arrive tomorrow. Once that happens, construction of biblical proportions shall commence.

Honestly man, try to buy another G5. I've had mine for 5 years now and still use it. Awesome, awesome mouse. Some people say the MX518 is better, but I <3 the G5.

I bet they're cheap on eBay/Amazon.

Can you guys help me out? I have these parts:

Have you tried a different monitor / TV? Try clearing MB CMOS. If you still get no video, probably a bad MB.

Howdy boys and girls, here is a pic of my new X79 setup :D

It's okay that I am proud and happy about my new beast and want to show it off right?

She is as follows:

i7-3930K @ 4.5Ghz - 1.4v w/ Corsair H100 (with push pull setup using 2x Arctic Cooling F12's and 2x Noctua NFP12)
Asus p9x79 Deluxe
16Gb Corsair Vengeance 1600 DDR3 8-8-8-24
AMD 6990 + 6970 TRIFIRE @ 880/1375
Corsair AX850 PSU
Kingston Hyper X SATAIII 120Gb SSD
G.Skill Falcon 2 SATAII 128Gb SSD
4x W.D 2TB Caviar Green
LG BluRay HDDVD Combo Drive
Corsair 700D Case

Outside:
Logitech G19 Keyboard
Logitech G13 Gamepad
Logitech G930 Wireless Headset
Logitech MX518 Gaming Mouse
Logitech MX Revolution Business Mouse
Xbox 360 Wireless Controller
iMac 27" 2560x1440 as Monitor 1
Dell 2407 24" as Monitor 2
Panasonic TH-P50ST30A as Monitor 3

Here is the peak overclocking performance that she's got, but I don't really want to run 1.5v 24/7.

3930k-oc3_4788.6mhz_1ks4y7.png

I also had to build a new real time info screen for my G19 so that I can actively see my temps and things like a gauge at all times due to having more cores and more GPU's now (previously my G19 screen only accounted for 2x GPU and 8x Threads, now I've got 3x GPU and 12x Threads). So here is my new creation, I'm stoked with it... looks awesome.

And to go along with it, I have my G19 Keyboard set on Red, and my G13 set on Blue. Looks mad.

What's the improvement in the 3dmark11 score?

Your top rad looks like it is being used as an INTAKE into the case?
Also keep an eye on your WD Green drives, I don't know if they still have head parking issues.

MX Rev is a mouse I miss. It's a shame the new model is worse imo.
Next thing to buy is a mechanical keyboard.

I haven't checked yet... Should get around to doing that... might do it now actually, good idea. Think I'm afraid it will be diddely squat.

Yeah, Radiator is an Intake, it's sucking cold air onto the radiator from outside and into the case yep yep. I mean, that means that the air that it brings through is already warmed by the Rad by the time it gets through, but it also means that the Rad is getting fresh cold air right from the start.

I considered doing one half intake, one half exhaust, but in the end I decided that both halves should be intake.

One of the best things about this new board is the PCIe x16 lane spacing, there is a double lane space between the cards this time whereas before, the two cards were squished together, while the 6990 still runs hotter than the 6970, I assume that this is just normal... it's running about 9 degree's cooler at idle than my old setup, and I haven't checked the temps with my new monitor screen yet but will be shortly.

I never actually use my MX Revolution for anything... I mean, I do, but it's just the Wireless Mouse that I use from my bed while watching things on my TV through my computer, my gaming mouse is the MX518 in which I have been using for so long that I cannot find anything that will replace it because it is the only mouse I've really used and the only mouse I'm comfortable with. I've considered and believe that the possible upgrade from this would be the Razer Mamba, but that's one hella expensive upgrade for just a mouse and I haven't had a chance to use one, I've just heard how impressive they are. Maybe one day I'll save up for a Mamba and buy one because a wireless mouse would be useful, but for now I'm totally happy with the 518.

G19 is one of the best things I've ever purchased if only for the screen on it and if only for the gauges that it shows me. When I play games I have the gauges to see how my computer is operating and functioning and for me, that's the best thing I could ask for, and then the G13 is a Fraps screen which shows a line and the consistency of the frame rate over the last 60 seconds.

Going to install 3DMark11 and run the benches now.

Nice work, Hazaro, but what about the gamers that prefer AMD to Intel?
Do you have any alternative for them (at least on the Budget PC one)?
The older builds had an x4 640, and the x4 955BE is also an option. These were removed upon Bulldozer being on a different socket and review of gaming benchmarks with the Intel chips.
The problem is for gaming and even in some multi threaded apps the G850/2100 beats both in everything so it is hard to support people buying that when you are giving people lowered performance for their money. Additionally at the time there was no upgrade path to Bulldozer without a new motherboard so that added to the cost. Now the Intel 1155 chips should work with Ivy Bridge as well and those chips should be great upgrade to anyone on a budget system.

An x4 955BE with a ~$100 AM3+ board will do just fine on most games and shouldn't limit you too much. Just make sure to overclock to get your value out of it. Unfortunately until Bulldozer is fixed it isn't even an upgrade for gaming.

Meh.

Maybe when the GTX 600 series launch I'll upgrade to the SB-E. Might as well do a bigger upgrade if it costs that much for the mobo and CPU alone.
Upgrade for 5% performance gain on GPUs?
Don't waste your money. Wait on Ivy Bridge and see if it matters, then see if Ivy-E matters.

Seeing that has started me down the bad path of looking at possible setups. I want to do a rampage iv build with tri-sli so bad. Damn you!

Also, rad setup.

Lol, 5% performance gain on 3DMark11 but in BF3 it's more like 25 - 30% gain.

Here is an image to show temps after 2 hours Prime 95 run at 4.5Ghz while running 1.4v

Ok new approach.
Budget: $700 + USA
Main Use: Gaming
Monitor Resolution: 1920x1080
List SPECIFIC games that you MUST be able play: Battlefield 3, Skyrim
Are reusing any parts?: No
When will you build?: Must buy parts on either black friday or cyber Monday.
Will you be overclocking?: Yes.
It looks like my 560ti(OC) and i52500K(OC) build might be a little too expensive. Any good deals I should look out for on black Friday? I want to run battlefield 3 on high at around 50-60fps.

Alright, one more question. Gonna be ordering my parts very soon, but I still need to pick up Windows 7. If this is going to be my only machine, I can just buy the $99.99 OEM version, right?

And would I buy the 64-bit or 32-bit version? I'm going with the Standard build in Hazaro's spreadsheet.

I didn't see anything applicable in the email I got about Amazon's BF deals this morning. Anyone know of anywhere with BF/CM deals on the parts for the Standard build and/or Windows 7?

http://www.geforce.com/Optimize/Guides/how-to-build-a-kick-ass-battlefield-3-pc
According to the guide from nvidia I can run it on that budget and then some.

Well you did say you're not recycling anything, so the assumption is that it's built completely from scratch. That link doesn't include an OS, monitor, KB/M and some audio system. It also did not factor in HDD price increases. The HDD there is listed as $60, but it's currently at $150 right now. A slower 320GB variant costs $100.

64bit always for Win 7. If you are a student you can get the $30 from Microsoft somehow.
Can you supply me with a link please? I did a search to no avail.
There's one in the OP for starters.

Have you considered Steelseries? They're all the rage these days.

And is that G. Skill SSD from your previous computer?

Hi guys,

Sorry but just a quick one, as I'm looking to order my PC today.

It needs to power an i7 CPU, 8GB RAM, 5750 GPU, 1xDVD and 3xHDDs

I'm deciding between the Antec TruePower 550w, BeQuiet PurePower 530w and the OCZ Modstream 500w.

Have to say after reading reviews and considering the price, the OCZ Modstream is very tempting, it's basically a modular version of their super quiet Strealthstream PSUs, which sounds perfect for me. I'm guessing 500w would be more than enough for my needs too? I haven't overclocked my CPU and never will, mostly because I have no idea how to do things like that :>

(edit) Just found a 600w modstream for a good price, tempting.
