The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

Looking into that before adding but sounds good.......maybe.

And the mod manager works again! For now :O

The version he posted before this one worked really well except it still said "Loading New Vegas..." instead of Skyrim and it stayed running after you exited the game. So if he got those things fixed, it'll be good.

I really need the Creation Kit to come out already so I can start putting weapons in here. Need some ginormous Berserk/Cloud Strife style greatswords.

I have models already, just need the damn Kit so I can put them in game. :/

I think I will stick with the current method but will add this as an alt for sure.

So very happy that I checked this thread before running Steam when I got home. What a clusterfuck.

I never like being a debbie downer.
But those latest drivers, the beta drivers. Absolutely fucked with my computer, lol.
I've fixed it, but somewhere along the line it totally corrupted some drivers or something and one of the monitors was spewing out black corrupted graphics, couldn't see shit. Its a good job I have a second monitor I could drag stuff over to, to work with.
I had to completely uninstall and driver sweep to get it back, although luckily I could see to do this.

Just a word of warning. Im going with the officials for now.
I'm on a Sapphire 6870 btw.

Also gave me graphical corruption in skyrim. Water was going MENTAL.
Hope no one else gets this.

gonna try this out, the launcher I mean.

DUDE. You have to do this!

I would love some crazy shit like that.

Oh god damn.
Just installed the 11.11a's as the replacement. Is fine when I install but, restart computer; Then its back. :(, might even roll back to the 11.9's when my Photoshop used to work properly too (fuck you AMD).

If I could afford it, straight to Nvidia. Like tomorrow.

Interesting, I may have to try the 11.11a ones just to see if my performance at least stays the same being this is the "official" Skyrim performance driver.

YES THIS. Someone needs to help me, my computer is totally fucked after installing those beta drivers that were linked. I can't even boot into fucking safe mode...

That's terrible. I'm trying the 11.11a driver out now. I have no issues with this one at all but reading the change log got me interested enough. And as always, some drivers will help or hurt you at times. I've learned this first hand as well.

6970 btw.

I'm doing a system restore to previous drivers, that was the only way I could get into my machine. Lets hope this works...

Can you get to the system restore? If your computer created a restore point when you installed the drivers (it /should/ have, or you should at least have one relatively close to it) you should be able to revert. Hold F8 as your computer starts, go to advanced boot options, and go to the repair option.

EDIT: Ah, see you've gotten that far.

and people were giving me a hard time about using my 11.5 drivers... always keep them up to date my ass. Yea sure they are beta drivers but why bother when mine have been giving me zero problems with any of the newest PC releases.

The waiting game for drivers that run Saints Row 3 and Skyrim better continues. Until then I'm happy with my performance.

feeling a bit anxious about playing skyrim after work now. Can I expect crashes? I haven't done any ram address fixes or anything of that sort....

For what it's worth, steam (and the whole computer) has been off since yesterday...so I might be safe.

Reading all I can on it on several forums, it seems that in some instances 11.11a is good and not good depending on games. Especially with CF scaling which is still not sorted with Skyrim. 11.5 and 11.9 were like this for me. More BSOD's and such. Matter of fact, I will just update the OP with the performance ones as one user having issues is enough. But from here on out, 11.11a will probably be the recommended.

This is why tier 1 hypervisors on client machines can't come soon enough.

I'd keep fighting to get into Safe Mode and then try a System Restore from there.

If you can't get into Safe Mode from the system partition, try your Win7 install DVD. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/668-system-recovery-options.html

Edit: well I was way late on that reply, still I want tier 1 hypervisors :(

A good friend of mine that has the Steam version of the game was so pissed after the trouble with the update tonight that he uninstalled the game and installed a pirated version instead. Said it was perfectly legal since he already bought the game (that is bullshit, but I totally get his point).

Now he can play the game and mod it with less problems than me since I'm playing the bought Steam version. I feel screwed and still refuse to pirate anything regardless that I legally own the game (heck, I work in this business, go die pirates) :/

But is this really how it should be and the best way to make people buy the game legally?

Alright, the system restore worked. I nearly had a fucking heart attack going through all that... I restored to my previous drivers. Liquid it must have been that other AMD beta thing that was posted, not the drivers that you posted. Either way, I'm not updating anything else when my performance is fine, too much hassle if something goes wrong.

EDIT: Noooooooo upon restarting again I'm getting the fucking screen split in half on my external monitor...

Reporting on 11.11a drivers

Performance is the same as the other preview driver I posted so I will that one linked in the OP. It's a step up and basically the best driver for Skyrim, minus CF setups which still need work. Being that this one is more official, it will be the default recommended until the next drivers hit.

Hey guys, I obviously have only scanned this 93 page thread, but I don't like what I'm seeing.

I was thinking of finally getting around to purchasing this on Steam.

Most of the problems I've seen the last few pages are AMD cards.

Does this game run well on NVidia cards? I've got i5 2500k, 8gb RAM, and a 1gb 560 ti.

Runs fine on nvidia.

As far as I know there aren't any vendor-specific issues. There are just general performance problems, particularly in some city cells.

For those with AMD card and Catalyst 11.11a, is the CCC AA working for you guys?

Regardless of the settings (2x to 8x), the FPS is still the same and the jaggyness is still there =/

EDIT: Rolling back the driver seems to fix it. I think I'll stick to the previous driver version for now.

There hasn't been many issues but I swear I've had the game hard freeze my system at least 5 times while walking in and selling stuff. I just got done playing for a good 1 1/2 hours and was going to sell my loot and as soon as I hit the cheese, freeze. Those are the kinds of things we need fixed asap. I very rarely get odd drops like more "cells are loading" and the whole thing about dead dragons and enemies needs to be fixed too. I killed this damn dragon on the foot steps of Whiterun about 8 hours ago and the corpse is still there!

Why don't you use RadeonPro to manage that? I stopped using CCC ages ago.

Heck, my profile settings should boost your performance. They're in the OP. I can run 2 or 4xSSAA with little hit.

And the funny thing is that before 11.11, CCC never worked for me. But they seemed to have overhauled and redone it and it's been loading since. Except I don't want it on.

God this has been a terrible day for me. Is there any reason why d3doverrider wouldn't work, been playing with it fine until all this shite today?

Edit: Looks like it's the fps limiter mod, back to dxtory for me I guess?

I think 11.7 was the last time I was able to use the Catalyst Control Center. Ever since then, I've been able to update the display driver just fine, but I can't use CCC. I can install it but any time I try to open it, weird artifacts appear on the screen then it goes black. I have to cut the power to turn it off after that.

It's really fucking annoying because CCC has been the only software I've seen so far that lets me change my primary monitor so I can game on my TV. Without CCC, I have to just unplug my DVI cable to force it to make my TV the primary.

Unfortunately, RadeonPro doesn't work for me due to the Win7 x64 issue when your DPI > 125%

Hmm I just took a look and didn't see anything weird. You mind taking a screenshot for me?

Interesting, I just enabled it again and it didn't give me any problems. I would describe the problem I was having, but I simply can't. It was like the flames were rendering way too many times is the only way I can say it.

Anyways, glad it's working again.lol

Well sold my ps3 version to buy a pc version (I7 930,12gig,radeon 5870 here), It's a lot more fluid but I don't find it particularly more beautiful. I was a bit afraid of the ps3 gamesave stuttering bug. So what do I get........, a nice yellow flickering of the screen when a light source is present (torch).
I Updated to the latest catalyst (had not since may when I had major problem with ccc not booting anymore (I needed it for my dual monitor/projector setup) and It seems to be repaires no more flickering though I don't know If I should mess with the ini file or just enjoy it as it is.

I don't find a major difference in the screenshots (pay in mind I don't even see a big difference with the ps3 version) so maybe its my eyesight.

Anything easy I could try that makes a substantial difference without any major problem?

I'm playing Ultra/8/16

Oh Yeah , f..k ATI for their shitty drivers, even since the radeon AIW9800 have I had driver problems.....

Really? Cause I played the PS3 version a few nights ago at my brother in laws place and it was basically unplayable. It was blurry, jaggy and everything popped into existence about 5 feet in front of you. I suggest playing with some ini settings (Liquids have been amazing for me), cause the PC version is like a whole generation ahead at least.

Yeah maybe it's having played it last week and just starting now on the pc. It more fluid by a big margin for sure. Ah well anyway now I stop worrying and start to enjoy the game. Even with all the comments about the texture work, few games have captured my imagination like this one, world design is great.

I really want to use this if it may help performance more than LAA (which I doubt) but I need to read more feedback on it. The stuttering is not really an issue but if this particular fix works then in the end, I may end up patching the game again ><

The function of this is to allow an LAA patch for the latest encrypted EXE (and future encrypted EXEs). It isn't necessary if you've already got a patched version of the EXE going, but it is at least futureproof. The author did replace GetTickCount() to attempt to alleviate stuttering problems, but that is just an extra.

May be worth it. I'm over thinking it but anything that may help performance is something I have an automatic interest in.

Hmm. I just got home and while Steam downloaded something, my game still says it's 1.1

It is 1.1. It just updated your TESV.exe. You can restore it or use the newly released 4gb skyrim mod. Check the OP fixes or the mod fixes sections.

We technically haven't had a real patch. We just had our exe's further locked.

Loading on my machine is so fast I can't even read the goddamn text, IF it shows up.
