The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

My experience has actually smoothed out about 31 hours in EXCEPT this random thing when I play like 2-3 hours the game freezes for no reason. I mean this last time, not 30 minutes ago, I went through the same spot and it just decided to freeze. Thank goodness I just saved as this dungeon is VERY long. I mean like at least 1.5 hours already.

The QD inventory mod is pretty awesome, but it keeps breaking for me. While in enchanting/smithing menus the item I highlight to craft/disenchant/enchant/etc. is not the item that shows up in the preview pane. And if I select it it is the item in the window pane that actually gets selected, not the item I highlighted.

So it's rather unuseable at the moment, but I hope he gets it fixed because I love being able to sort by weight, see lots of items at once, etc.

It's definitely a WIP to keep an eye on until the bigger and better full conversions hit.

I thought that was on by default? Interesting.
Nope.

Here's one I took just now:

P.s. I didn't put the setting on very high because my system can't handle it. It barely handles high. Also note that I have some texture mods for things like rocks and water and that's why it looks different to the pic I posted earlier. Still jaw dropping though in my opinion.

You using the LAA flag / patch?

It only crashes when I enter the "bonechill passage." If I'm out in the open it all works fine.

I've done the following:

Turn off all OC
Use original config's
Turn off all nvidia inspector settings

One question I have is about skyrim.ini I assume people mean skyrim_default.ini right? I don't have a skyrim.ini

located under: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim

To add to my praise of Mod Organizer, it also lets you edit the ini files without affecting the main ones. Not really any issue in the first place but it's a nice feature and access is easy.

Holy crap..

Just did the ini tweaks in the OP and some tweaks from the geforce guide and the game looks jaw dropping. The ambient occlusion is HUGE. Sadly it makes the game too laggy (factory OC 580 and 3.2 CPU).

Have you tried the Performance and Quality AO modes? The perf hit is far lower with those.

You're using NVIDIA Inspector I presume? Where you enable AO in it, simply change the value from High Quality to Quality or Performance, and then apply the change.
Ah rightttt. I thought you meant something else haha.

Yea, I've seen that option :) Haven't tried it below Quality yet. At Quality I get around 30-45 fps. I'll try changing it to Performance tomorrow and giving it a shot.

The visual difference between the three settings is little to none, but the perf difference is huge (I've been using AO in Skyrim for some time now and have tested it extensively in search of the most demanding, best-looking config).

What's your rig like?

Speaking of which how do u install mods and get them working? Not sure if im doing it right but i dled mods the the zip files to where the mods are installed then clicked install. Then I guess I just leave the manager on and launch skyrim?

No you're looking in the wrong place, it should be in My Documents/My Games/Skyrim

I find the easiest way to install mods is to just create a folder in the 'mods' folder inside the 'ModOrganizer' directory. Add the mod files to the created folder (make sure they're in the correct folder e.g. textures or clutter) and tick them in the ModOrganizer interface.

To get it to work properly, go into Settings > Load options > Proxy DLL. This will make it so that you can launch the game from Steam and your mods will still load. A good way to check to see if mods are installing properly is to download this. It's very easy to spot so makes your job easier.

i7-2600K @ 4.2GHz
GeForce GTX 580 1.5GB 3-Way SLI
8GB DDR3 RAM
Win 7 64-bit
Yikes. Looking good!

I'm the same minus the crazy 4.2GHz and the 3-Way SLI.

Please ignore any mistakes in this post. I'm pretty freakin tired.

Fuckin' the AO makes it look so good.

How do I get that goin' on in my game?

I'm on an i5 750 2.67ghz
GTX460
4GB RAM

It's pretty sad how big the size of the Rage file was compared to this game and this is open world and just flat out looks better. Especially compared to the laughable textures up close in Rage.

If you have the latest NVIDIA drivers it should exist. If not, you'll have to make it yourself, but that really shouldn't be the case.

I just went to the Nvidia site and downloaded the most recent they had for my gtx460. The install had images of Skyrim saying something like "Is your pc ready for Skyrim?" lol

I guess i'll look again. The drivers are from october.

Edit:

Looks like I need to get beta drivers, based on the pics in the guide.

Trying out Oblivion and F3 methods: I like the more pronounced effect of the F3 SSAO but there were some instances where it applied it to your equipped weapon when looking at a cliff. I think I'll go with F3 anyway though.

Using the example above F3 appears far more accurate, adding shadows under the roof thatching. In general, the Oblivion method appears to only handle stuff in direct view and seems unable to generate approximated shadowing when there are multiple layers of textures/models/geometry between the light source and the object that has to have a shadow cast upon it.

Honestly, performance hit on Quality/High Quality AO sucks, and doesn't really look any better. Performance AO is where it's at.

But the shadowy clouds around certain grass variants is jarring, and the like flicker too. High quality is super nice, but the frame hit is hard to swallow, even knocking it down to 720p

How does one choose between Oblivion and F3 AO?
