I'd guess season 4 will end with (ADwD spoilers)...

Stannis defeats the Ironborn at Deepwood Motte.
The Boltons capture Moat Cailin.
Dany refuses Xaro's ships and is presented a bloody gauntlet.
Bran meets the Three Eyed Crow.
Jorah kidnaps Tyrion.

Several years have passed from book 1 to book 5. Won't be much of a problem.

They wont introduce all the new characters and locations like Dorne for example in the last 3-4 episodes of Season 4. They'll build those sets and cast those actors for use in a full season. Outside of the Ironborn stuff, I really think Season 5 will be both Feast and Dance together. There isnt a single Feast/Dance POV story arc that cant be told in 10 episodes.

Damn, same thing here...
I finished that chapter and I had the book in my hand, I kept staring in it with my jaw open unable to believe what I just read.
Then I went outside... I couldn't stop thinking about it, kept pacing around...

I then returned and slowly read the chapter after that one.. When I finished, I genuinely shouted "WTF!! GEORGE STOP KILLING ME YOU FUCK!! FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU!!!" xD
 
I hate the Ironborn stuff so very much. Dorne was a close second. I kept waiting for GRRM to make the characters do something that would redeem those bits and I got to the end of ADwD and was like:

Dorne. There's so much fucking awesome that goes on down there and will go on down there in the time to come. They know how to play the game of thrones right now better than anyone.
 
They might know the rules, but everything they ever attempt ends in failure, so it's frustrating reading about potential game-changers that amount to nothing. The Sand Snakes' scheme to crown Myrcella, Doran's scheme to marry Dany to Quentyn / get some dragons back dragons and Oberyn's plan to avenge his sister's death were all a complete waste of time.

More like Fauxgon, amirite? I get that he's meant to be Dorne's favourite son, but I don't think his story will lead anywhere definitive either.

I don't like him as he always felt shoehorned in to me. His presence, if he's real, supersedes everyone else's claim to the Iron Throne, makes the story simple and renders all the effort and suffering the other characters already went through null and void. The very idea of this Jonny-come-lately just swooping in and saving the day makes me angry just thinking about it and I hate that GRRM expects me to like him.

So no, Aegon makes the Dorne stuff worse in my mind.

Still not as bad as the Ironborn, though. How GRRM managed to make Irish Vikings boring is simply lost on me.

I don't know about him, but I don't consider great prose in and of itself to make for great reading. See also: Tinkers by Paul Harding. It's probably the same reason I don't enjoy drum solos - yes, they can be glorious displays of technique and beautiful to behold if you know what the drummer is doing, but without a melody or lyrics to hold it together, to the average listener, it's just noise.

AffC and ADwD were great books in a series, but as standalone works, a lot of people found them unsatisfying because of the lack of major plot progression.

But I don't think it matters how strong Aegon's claim is... So Dorne will join him, but still he has Stannis, the Lannisters and the Ironborn to face.. And who knows what type of alliances will be made/broken when all the realm knows of his return...

Also, it's not certain that Daenerys will ever join him... Even if she got off her ass and finally marched to Westeros, that doesn't mean she'll be willing to join forces with Aegon... Perhaps she'll decide he's an impostor (Maybe she'll test his 'blood' or whatever by how well the Dragons like him)

And let's not forget Littlefinger.. As far as I know, we're not sure which side he's on... We know Varys is involved for the Targaryans, but I don't remember reading anything that indicated Littlefinger's loyalty... So who knows what will he do when all the players are in Westeros...

Stannis might actually stand aside for a legitimate heir, or at least be conflicted about pursuing the war.

I've never been able to read any sex scene in ASOIAF comfortably, right from GOT to ADWD, because I can never forget that it's Martin writing the scene.

I hope you're right, because I'm about halfway through it, and it's still way too slow.

For me, A Storm of Swords has been my favorite. That season is going to be amazing when they get to it.

The best part is that this happens twice in the book. No one seems to have a good idea where cocks end and cunts begin.

The sex scenes in the books always make me laugh. Fat pink mast.
 
I really enjoyed Feast for Crows and Dance with Dragons. Dance with Dragons could have been a classic if he had
focused a little and got rid of most of Dany's story but whatever.
AFFC and ADWD:
The Brienne and priest chapter about war was incredible. Theon chapters were incredibly moving for me.
 
I thought AFFC and ADWD were amazing. But then again, I didn't have to wait more than 1 week for ADWD. I can understand people that've waited 5 years for the sequel are disappointed, but I think the plot is moving in the same speed has it has since book 1; which is really fucking slow. But I like the slowness of it (it builds up the wtf moments better), but I can fully understand people's complaints. I will probably be the same when Winds of Winter comes after 5 years.
 
Finally got access to HBO Go, wife and I have been marathoning season 1. She read the books, I haven't.

Sweet merciful Christ this is a good show.

Daenerys' character is so damn hot.

I think we'll get at least 6 seasons. Even if Winds of Winter takes GRRM another 5-6 years (don't think he will btw), it'll be done or finished enough to be filmed for a 6th season by the time they get there. It's the last book that worries me.
 
99% chance we get through a Storm of Swords and that's all I need to be happy. Although of course I would like them to finish the series. If for no other reason than to just to see how they tackle AFFC/ADWD to make them watchable.

Depends on the reception for the 5th season as that is going to turn alot of people off after the awesomeness of SoS. They might get around this by filming both 5 and 6 together which is actually very likely. The last season of the show is almost certainly going to be TV original. Sucks but I've come to terms with that.

I dunno, there's lots of good cliffhangers to end S5 that will bring people back for S6 if S5 is pretty slow.

- Jon getting stabbed
- Stannis possibly being dead
- Brienne being hanged
- Aegon bringing war to Westeros
- Dany finding the Khalasar

What else am I forgetting?
