This circumvents the monthly fee for tethering?

It does, but it is almost certainly going to get yanked in short order. I'm actually surprised it's still up despite all the press it's gotten (if it is in fact still up).

There's a new tether app in the store that costs $15. It requires software running on the laptop and USB (no wifi) but it works

Tether.com

I'll quote my review from the other thread:

"I finally got to try it after waiting forever for the website to load so I could download the desktop client. Works like a charm, and I hope AT&T doesn't catch on like they have for the jailbreak tethering methods (the most prominent one being MyWi).

The only things I don't like about it are that you need the phone connected through USB and that it only shares the 3G with one device. So no keeping my phone in my pocket while I browse on the train I guess."

I downloaded both the Mac and Windows desktop clients, so I can mirror them for people who bought the app but can't use it because the company's website is being hammered.

This was an incredible oversight on Apple's part :-0

It only works via a USB connection and will very likely be broken by some update that Apple makes in the future anyways.

Seems like a pretty poor product for my needs. I'm a WiFi tethering kind of guy.

So I have a 3Gs... I want to upgrade, but I don't want to renew a contract with At&T.
If I buy a 4s straight up, can I just activate it on my itunes and have it replace my current phone?

Sure, but you'll be paying a lot. And if you're going to be staying with AT&T anyway, why not just renew?

Why don't you want to renew your contract? If you're planning to jump to another carrier, it'd likely be cheaper to just break your current one and jump ship now and get the discounted phone price somewhere else for the 4S.

If you're just trying to ride out your current contract, you should probably reach out to AT&T and see if they'll let you change the device on your contract without making you sign a new 2 year deal. I did the same type of thing before and they really messed it up so that I did get a new contract anyways despite having been told that I wouldn't.

because every time I get a new phone they tell me my plan is unavailable blah blah and make me sign a new contract that is basically more than the last for the same stuff. I'd just rather pay up front.

So I am ready to move away from my work Blackberry and get on the iPhone train. I'm hoping someone can answer these q's for me.

1) I'm debating Verizon vs. Sprint for service, and only Sprint for the fact that it has unlimited data. Verizon's website states that 95% of users use less than 2GB of data per month. I would probably stream Netflix once a month and listen to Spotify sometimes on my iPhone. Is it 2GB of data per user if it's a family plan?

2) With the iPhone 5 coming next summer, is it feasible to sell my iPhone 4S at this time (for probably 50% of what I paid) and then buy an iPhone 5 without contract? Would this be like a $500 phone or could it be like $200-300? I know it's speculation at this point but hoping I can buy an iPhone 5 at MSRP without signing up for another 2 year contract

Non-contract iPhones are quite a bit more expensive than that - $600+ at the lowest memory size.

I don't think there is going to be an iPhone 5 next summer.

Most people seem to agree that new iPhones will probably be unveiled in the fall now.

Wow, so what do people here usually do? Sell current one for $300-400 (to someone overseas unlocked?) and apply that to the $600-700 new one without contract?

That or they come right out there wallet for it. You would be surprise what people do to get the new iPhone every year.

Lol it's been removed. Hope no one here missed it lol
Why? I avoided it, choosing to see how things played out. If you bought it, you may have just wasted $15. I wouldn't chance AT&T switching me over to a tethering plan, because this app triggered their unapproved tethering detection system.

Per MacRumors:

"According to Apple, users who purchased iTether before it was pulled will continue to be able to use the product."

I'm sure they'd disable the app's functionality and issue refunds if AT&T will charge users anyway. The $15 would be a waste if it continued to work but only with the normal monthly fee.

They warn people if they see suspicious activity.. They don't randomly just switch you to a tethering plan without warning.

I'm on Verizon and bought it.. I did it for emergency situations and think it will be worth it. I tried it out last night and it worked great. I'm glad I did get it. And now its not available. People can say "Oh well it'll be broken sooner or later" but that wasn't the case with that Light app that had tethering built in secretly before being pulled as that still works on many of my friends phones. Its a chance I'm willing to take.. 15 bucks isn't much.

Yeah. I guess I wasn't clear. I wouldn't be afraid of getting my plan changed, out of nowhere, just losing out on the $15, because I think the possibility, that the carriers will actually allow this, is remote. Obviously, some people see $15 as worth it, for the possible chance that their carrier will not thwart it. I'm not that optimistic.

I am a happy iPhone owner since about 4 days now, but everyday I'm happier with it. Today I opened iTunes for the first time, and it's so delightful browsing the latest music, and even listening to previews! Apple stuff is just so well designed. Can't get enough of it.

Anyone have their email setup as Gmail Exchange? I'm using it as exchange because I want to get emails instantly through push instead of fetching for it. The problem I'm having now under Exchange is only about 10 emails show up and there is no 'Load more emails' link at the bottom.

Is there any particular reason why Apple doesn't just pull the iTether app in the USA App Store and leave it available in other countries where the carriers don't charge for tethering? Are tethering apps prohibited by the App Store rules?

Best to ask here I think:

I'm teaching english in korea for a year and need a smartphone. Buying a used phone would be more cost efficient than signing a contract, and because of the iphone4s there's plenty of people selling their 3gs.

Question is how much you say the phone is worth now used? Need a good frame of reference

So my wife just lost her iPhone, and I just got to the place where "Find My iPhone" last located it about 30 minutes ago. However, just before I got here (a fairly busy area unfortunately) it seems like the phone turned off (possibly due to the battery dying).

I already locked it, and I sent a message to the phone asking the finder to call me several times within the last 3-4 hours. No luck. I watched it move a just a few blocks (like maybe 100 yards) before settling in this spot.

What are my options here? Just pray someone will charge it again and call me back eventually? When should I do a full wipe?

Edit: I located it again, briefly, within 100 feet from where I am. Problem is, it could be in a very busy bar across the street. Now it's not able to locate - last found 13 min. ago...

Double edit: Holy poop, somebody finally answered, told me he "bought it on the street for $250." Basically said if I wanted it back I had to give him the money, since he was now out $250. Yeah right. This was an iPhone 4, with a cracked screen. I was tracking him as we were talking, and I thought about calling the police, but in the end I just hung up and wiped it.

so, the new iOS 5.1 beta is doing a great job, so far with the battery life.

looking good.

Whoa Heist. That is sick. I thought I was doing a great job, but your battery seems much better!

After my last charge, my numbers were like this:

Usage:

- Usage: 6 hours, 52 minutes

- Standby: 22 hours, 20 minutes.

But my battery was all empty! And you still have 66% left? That is amazing.

Edit: I see now that you have installed 5.1 beta. When will this be available for the regular iPhone users?

I downloaded a podcast on iTunes, why does it stop playing when I open safari?

Downloaded as in clicked on the "free" button and played the podcast through the Music app, or just clicked the episode and played it from within iTunes?

When you click on the episode and it plays from within iTunes, you can listen to podcasts over 3G without worrying about the 20MB download limit...but you're forced to stay in the iTunes app otherwise the audio stops.

If you actually downloaded the podcast and are playing it through the Music app, try double tapping home and closing out the Music app and Safari and try again. If that doesn't work reset the phone. If that doesn't work...I'm out of ideas!

got my white 4s on release day with zagg's invisible shield (overpriced but still works well), also spent about 4 hours researching a good case and the best I was able to find was this, the Ballistic Soft Gel case. I've dropped my phone a few times already and it's saved it every time, plus it's light and thin yet provides good protection.

I don't roll with cases, but in your case, you did good. NFI what you're doing with it, since I'm always fiddling with it while biking and skating, too.

I want something for drop protection too, but literally every case looks like shit and taints the aesthetic of the phone. Even the minimalist transparent stuff still looks plastic-y and crappy. Sigh.

After going through four different cases - the Switch Easy Vulcan and NUDE, a CaseMate Gelli and a Griffin Reveal - I'm happy to report that I've finally found the perfect case, the Elago Breathe S4. It has a nice, slightly-rubberized feel that doesn't slide on surfaces, a raised 1mm edge to protect the glass in case it get's placed face-down, the perforated back looks like steel mesh, and a minimal profile. It's beautiful. It's honestly the best case I've ever used (Droid or otherwise).

hmm... is anyone offering a glass case for the iPhone 4/4S?

Dude get a leather case then. Leather will protect it from a fall.

I read yesterday that iFixit is selling transparent back covers for the phone. No black or white, just see through straight into the internals of the phone, baby!

...not that that's a case, but if you shatter it than you could just buy another one.

I was being facetious... although I imagine a glass and aluminium case that somehow sold for $50 would be a bestseller. I still wouldn't buy one...

iPhone 4S propels Apple back to growth in U.K. smartphones

GigaOM said:
Apple won an impressive 42.8 percent of all U.K. smartphone sales in October, based largely on the introduction of the iPhone 4S. It’s the first time since Nov. 2010 that Apple saw its share of the U.K. smartphone market grow, and the iPhone easily topped Android devices, which grabbed 35 percent of sales for the month.

The sales stats, gathered by research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, are perhaps most impressive because Apple really only started selling its latest iPhone halfway through the month, on Oct. 14. Apple’s big month helped it grow its market share 2.8 percent versus the previous year in the quarter leading up to the end of October, climbing to 27.8 percent mostly at the expense of Android, which was down from 49.9 to 46 percent. That helped Apple climb to a second-place spot among U.K. smartphone platforms, with RIM falling to third place with a drop of 1.3 percentage points to 19.6 percent share.

However, Apple’s sales were mostly from inside its own camp, Kantar Worldpanel ComTech points out. Amazingly, 75 percent of those who purchased a new 4S in October had previously owned an iPhone device, and 14 percent were upgrading from the iPhone 4, which means a good percentage of them were probably buying out contracts early to get the device.

While it’s good for Apple that people who use their devices like them enough to return to the iPhone time and time again, the high rate of return customers could mean we’ll quickly see Apple’s October gains give way to Android successes on the back of devices like the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the first smartphone packing Ice Cream Sandwich. Then again, Apple also now has a free entry-level iPhone as well as a cheaper mid-range option, so the 4S’s success may stand a better chance of being buttressed by those other options in the longer term.

Apple’s iPhone likely isn’t done posting big sales, especially since it’s high on people’s lists in terms of ideal gifts for the holidays, but it’ll have more competition in the coming months. It’ll be interesting to see whether Apple can continue gaining back share in the face of the Android juggernaut, or whether this spike is just a one-time blip on the radar.

22 per cent of [UK] iPhone owners regret buying
CNET said:
22 per cent of UK iPhone owners regret the purchase, according to a survey.

The poll, conducted by GoodMobilePhones.co.uk, asked 1,694 Brits aged 18 and over whether they were satisfied with their phone. And it would seem that a decent chunk of those who opted for Apple's shiny high-end smart phone wish they hadn't bothered.

So why would anyone regret filling their pockets with iPhone-flavoured goodness? 43 per cent of those who said they 'regretted' getting an iPhone claimed it was down to jealousy of rival smart phones, whereas 25 per cent blamed battery life.

While 1,694 people is a decent survey size, not all of those will have owned iPhones, so the actual number of iPhone owners polled will be smaller, and therefore any results garnered will be a bit less reliable.

But is there a nugget of truth buried in these results? Apple certainly knows how to market its gadgets, filling your telly, trains and Tube with its typically trendy advertising, so we're sure there are a number of folks out there who get excited about owning an iPhone, only to find out post-purchase that it's not really the right mobile for them.

We've also seen some excellent iPhone alternatives this year, not least the staggeringly good Samsung Galaxy S2, a phone whose huge 4.3-inch display will have drawn more than a few green-eyed glances from iPhone owners. The Nokia Lumia 800 is also out now, dragging the underdog Windows Phone operating system into the limelight.

Why not spend a little more money and get the infinitely more fashionable and protective Lifeproof case?

How much, and does it obscure the camera/headphones etc? Nice looking case.

Infinity Blade 2 is coming out today it seems. Yay.

When I got my i4 back in February I scanned the internet for every review for the iPhone 4 I could find. In almost all of them the Defender came out at the most rugged and durable. Of course it's bulky as hell and adds a good lbs to the weight of the phone. But, after spending so much for my first smartphone I spared no expense. ^.^
