There's a new tether app in the store that costs $15. It requires software running on the laptop and USB (no wifi) but it works

This circumvents the monthly fee for tethering?

So I have a 3Gs... I want to upgrade, but I don't want to renew a contract with At&T.
If I buy a 4s straight up, can I just activate it on my itunes and have it replace my current phone?

Sure, but you'll be paying a lot. And if you're going to be staying with AT&T anyway, why not just renew?
2) With the iPhone 5 coming next summer, is it feasible to sell my iPhone 4S at this time (for probably 50% of what I paid) and then buy an iPhone 5 without contract? Would this be like a $500 phone or could it be like $200-300? I know it's speculation at this point but hoping I can buy an iPhone 5 at MSRP without signing up for another 2 year contract
Non-contract iPhones are quite a bit more expensive than that - $600+ at the lowest memory size.
Wow, so what do people here usually do? Sell current one for $300-400 (to someone overseas unlocked?) and apply that to the $600-700 new one without contract?
Why? I avoided it, choosing to see how things played out. If you bought it, you may have just wasted $15. I wouldn't chance AT&T switching me over to a tethering plan, because this app triggered their unapproved tethering detection system.Lol it's been removed. Hope no one here missed it lol

Yeah. I guess I wasn't clear. I wouldn't be afraid of getting my plan changed, out of nowhere, just losing out on the $15, because I think the possibility, that the carriers will actually allow this, is remote. Obviously, some people see $15 as worth it, for the possible chance that their carrier will not thwart it. I'm not that optimistic. They warn people if they see suspicious activity.. They don't randomly just switch you to a tethering plan without warning.
I downloaded a podcast on iTunes, why does it stop playing when I open safari?
got my white 4s on release day with zagg's invisible shield (overpriced but still works well), also spent about 4 hours researching a good case and the best I was able to find was this, the Ballistic Soft Gel case. I've dropped my phone a few times already and it's saved it every time, plus it's light and thin yet provides good protection.

I don't roll with cases, but in your case, you did good. NFI what you're doing with it, since I'm always fiddling with it while biking and skating, too.

I want something for drop protection too, but literally every case looks like shit and taints the aesthetic of the phone. Even the minimalist transparent stuff still looks plastic-y and crappy. Sigh.
hmm... is anyone offering a glass case for the iPhone 4/4S?
I was being facetious... although I imagine a glass and aluminium case that somehow sold for $50 would be a bestseller. I still wouldn't buy one...I read yesterday that iFixit is selling transparent back covers for the phone. No black or white, just see through straight into the internals of the phone, baby!
...not that that's a case, but if you shatter it than you could just buy another one.
GigaOM said:Apple won an impressive 42.8 percent of all U.K. smartphone sales in October, based largely on the introduction of the iPhone 4S. It’s the first time since Nov. 2010 that Apple saw its share of the U.K. smartphone market grow, and the iPhone easily topped Android devices, which grabbed 35 percent of sales for the month.
The sales stats, gathered by research firm Kantar Worldpanel ComTech, are perhaps most impressive because Apple really only started selling its latest iPhone halfway through the month, on Oct. 14. Apple’s big month helped it grow its market share 2.8 percent versus the previous year in the quarter leading up to the end of October, climbing to 27.8 percent mostly at the expense of Android, which was down from 49.9 to 46 percent. That helped Apple climb to a second-place spot among U.K. smartphone platforms, with RIM falling to third place with a drop of 1.3 percentage points to 19.6 percent share.
However, Apple’s sales were mostly from inside its own camp, Kantar Worldpanel ComTech points out. Amazingly, 75 percent of those who purchased a new 4S in October had previously owned an iPhone device, and 14 percent were upgrading from the iPhone 4, which means a good percentage of them were probably buying out contracts early to get the device.
While it’s good for Apple that people who use their devices like them enough to return to the iPhone time and time again, the high rate of return customers could mean we’ll quickly see Apple’s October gains give way to Android successes on the back of devices like the new Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the first smartphone packing Ice Cream Sandwich. Then again, Apple also now has a free entry-level iPhone as well as a cheaper mid-range option, so the 4S’s success may stand a better chance of being buttressed by those other options in the longer term.
Apple’s iPhone likely isn’t done posting big sales, especially since it’s high on people’s lists in terms of ideal gifts for the holidays, but it’ll have more competition in the coming months. It’ll be interesting to see whether Apple can continue gaining back share in the face of the Android juggernaut, or whether this spike is just a one-time blip on the radar.
CNET said:22 per cent of UK iPhone owners regret the purchase, according to a survey.
The poll, conducted by GoodMobilePhones.co.uk, asked 1,694 Brits aged 18 and over whether they were satisfied with their phone. And it would seem that a decent chunk of those who opted for Apple's shiny high-end smart phone wish they hadn't bothered.
So why would anyone regret filling their pockets with iPhone-flavoured goodness? 43 per cent of those who said they 'regretted' getting an iPhone claimed it was down to jealousy of rival smart phones, whereas 25 per cent blamed battery life.
While 1,694 people is a decent survey size, not all of those will have owned iPhones, so the actual number of iPhone owners polled will be smaller, and therefore any results garnered will be a bit less reliable.
But is there a nugget of truth buried in these results? Apple certainly knows how to market its gadgets, filling your telly, trains and Tube with its typically trendy advertising, so we're sure there are a number of folks out there who get excited about owning an iPhone, only to find out post-purchase that it's not really the right mobile for them.
We've also seen some excellent iPhone alternatives this year, not least the staggeringly good Samsung Galaxy S2, a phone whose huge 4.3-inch display will have drawn more than a few green-eyed glances from iPhone owners. The Nokia Lumia 800 is also out now, dragging the underdog Windows Phone operating system into the limelight.

Why not spend a little more money and get the infinitely more fashionable and protective Lifeproof case?
