Digital Foundry VS Bethesda: PS3 Skyrim is still shit

The game won't be recalled and Beth won't be sued. In fact I assume they will walk away from this with accolades and awards.

It's everyone else with egg on our faces.

I'm really looking forward to the end of the year awards. I expect that Skyrim will win overall GoTY awards from some sites, but i'm interested in seeing how many of them give it the PS3 GoTY award. Especially since it's clear that many of them haven't even played it on that system.

I really have no idea how any of this stuff works... never really follow it besides threads on gaf... but I wonder how many outlets had already planned for Skyrim to GOTY and if they'd even makes changes this late.

I mean aren't mags (or *rolls eyes* big awards shows) usually sorted out months before they hit print?

Any game site worth its salt should retract its review score for the PS3 version of Skyrim. Did major outlets publish PS3 reviews based solely on their 360 experience?
Christ. They're in so deep with publishers that they'll simply take their word that the 360/PS3 versions are at parity and publish a major review based on one version... what a joke.

People need to make as big a stink as possible over this. I doubt Beth will actually fix it otherwise, since I feel it's likely an issue that requires huge development effort that just isn't budgeted for. At the very least, maybe they'll give a significant discount to those who own the PS3 version (since free is simply out of the question).

Jeff Gerstmann mentioned on the Bonus Round that it was his GoTY. Although he's just one person so that doesn't mean that Giant Bomb will give it that award. I'm sure that it's going to win quite a few GoTY.

Yep.

If that were the case we'd all be a bunch of tool's. That whole voting thing would be completely pointless.

Secretly ~Put's on tin-foil hat~ I've always believed something similar though.

Skyrim might have a rough time on GAF anyway.

Hah, every huge game got a semi-to-really divided reception on GAF.

Uncharted 3-lolz aiming, wtf elena your face

Zelda-Too linear, same 3 areas, fuck phi, fuck you waggle, let go of my hand perv

Skyrim-fuck you bethesda you thieves ima gonna sue you

Batman-AA was better, give me dat

Seems like Dark Souls is making a come back...

Haha... I'm sorry. I didn't realize there was voting involved.

Pshhhh.... Dark Souls ain't even hard.

It's gotta be Saints Row: The Third imo.

Btw, if PS3 people are looking for something to play until Bethesda fix this shit, I'm happy to inform you that Volition did a fantastic job with all versions of SR3. Yes I'm obsessed, serious problem etc, but the game is just so fun.

Is it good? It looked really crazy/funny from the previews but I assumed it'd be a janky game (not sure why exactly). I'm probably gonna trade Skyrim...

My problem with SR3 is that sometimes my Brother, Dad, Mom, /whoever, likes to watch me game. It would be terrible for them to watch me run around with big rubber dong's in my hands lol.

Knowing GiantBomb, they wouldn't have touched the PS3 version.

And brad apparently haven't. Which is why the review was for 360 and PC version at GB.

heck, if you check metacritic, 14 ps3 reviews vs 22 pc reviews vs 82 360 reviews. So there really weren't 'many ps3 reviewers' at all.

I guess even if many people got skyrim press codes, they didn't get the borked ps3 version.

But the crap about the PS3 version started after only a week of the game being out. And it's only been out for a month. So if these mags were planning to make it GOTY months before it was even released, then there's a lot more wrong than them just playing the 360 version and slapping its score on the PS3.

Gonna keep an eye out for that one during holiday sales. I almost picked it up last month for ~$20, but I didn't want to exceed my bandwidth cap and was pre-occupied with Skyrim anyway.

The DF footage is the first I've seen of the PS3 game and I'm honestly surprised it runs so smoothly on a fresh game. It's no wonder sites didn't catch it.

It is sooooooooo good. The combat is pretty close to Just Cause 2 but I felt it was a lot tighter, so it's refreshing to play because it's not another bloody cover-shooter among other things. There isn't any jank there I can think of, it's just over the top insanity from start to finish. Definitely the unexpected triumph of the year, especially if you can play it in co-op.

Haha you might have to skip it then, there's far, far worse things they might see ;)

Plenty of sites have "dubious honors" awards categories. That would be the place for the press to address this. I would love for some high profile sites to give Bethesda some heat there, but I doubt it will happen.

I don't see how a site like Gamespot, who scored the PS3 version the same as the other ones, can save face talking about how shitty the PS3 version is.
Gametrailers, who have made enough money with less drastic comparison videos, also haven't shown anything on that front yet to my knowledge. This would be a chance for one of those "reveals" they love to talk about all year when they're just showing handed down pr material.

It's better than no coverage at all. Here are the last Skyrim stories that other major sites have run

Why isn't there a video game version of the Razzie Awards? This is a shoe-in for Shame of the Year.

As long as PS3 gets Turd of the Year, I don't mind if 360 or PC gets Game of the Year. No self-respecting publication should hand out an award to Skyrim without putting a

**!!VERY NOTICEABLE DISCLAIMER!!**

The Sims 2 for PC had a somewhat similar bug - after you played a neighborhood for a given amount of time (depending on how fast your computer was) there were so many memories for the Sims, when they tried to talk about them, they'd think about it for too long (as it was going through all the memories) and time out, triggering a cut-out loop, causing them to jump out of the action they were doing.

Made it impossible to eat with other people or use the hot tub.

But it really didn't show up until about a month or so of playing.

It eventually got patched though.

First time I've actually seen this in motion. Totally inexcusable on Bethesda's part. This isn't nitpicking, this is on the border of being broken and unplayable.

How a company can spend so much time developing a great game but then be so careless with Quality Assurance is pretty baffling.

It's because Bethesda doesn't give a rats ass about PS3 users. They just want to get your money and give a big F U to you.

You know they won't put a noticeable disclaimer at all.

Having said that would be funny if this wins both awards. Most glitchy game and GOTY.

They will probably give uncharted 3 or another game goty for ps3, since they all rated it pretty high, as for skyrim, it could easily be 360 game of the year or pc game of the year, or rpg of the year, it's easy to give every high profile game an award if they want to avoid controversies I think, it doesn't really matter.

I've never had Lag issues and i play on Ps3; maybe newer models don't have these problems.

110+ hours and I'll have a platinum trophy once I finish the DB quests and it took ~6 hours at the end of nonstop playing to experience any slowdown here. If I were being paid to review this on the PS3 I wouldn't have realized there were issues either based on my experience. Since I had no issues, this is still one of my GotY contenders.

You'd think they would notice this while testing it, how can they miss such a big thing?
It's freaking unplayable and not acceptable at all.
If they had competent QA, the testers probably *didn't* miss it. Bethesda probably just didn't want to fix it, or couldn't and said screw it, we'll release it anyway.

Isnt the game blurry as fuck?

I dunno about "blurry as fuck" but it's a wonderful game and DF gave the PS3 version the nod over the 360 version. I'm pretty sure it uses Quincunx AA, so it's probably a little blurry to be fair.

umm, DF gave the 360 a "clear advantage" over the ps3 one

DF said:
we can confirm that the 360 does command a clear advantage over the PS3 when it comes to both image quality and performance.

Digital Foundry said:
When it comes down to the final analysis of the console versions it's all about compromises when deciding which one to go for, but if we had to choose between the two we'd take the PS3 release for the lack of screen tearing, seeing as this has far more impact on your enjoyment of the game than the drop in image quality. Alternatively, if the 360 version is your only option, by all means pick it up instead - the content is identical between releases and most of the fun comes from the madcap antics on offer. The technical issues - while unfortunate - aren't deal-breakers.

?

umm, DF gave the 360 a "clear advantage" over the ps3 one
They did not. The 360 version was stated as being the worst as you either put up with constant tearing or lower framerates.

Oh, in case you didn't notice, we're talking about Saints Row The Third.

Any game site worth its salt should retract its review score for the PS3 version of Skyrim. Did major outlets publish PS3 reviews based solely on their 360 experience?

Outside of PlayStation focused websites and magazines I'm sure the majority of them did just that. However you can't even count of that as magazines such as PSM have their online presence via CVG. http://www.computerandvideogames.com/sites/psm/ The link to their review goes right to the CVG. Now unless there is another review out there I'm not seeing and the magazine review is different it looks like they share reviews. So even a PlayStation focused outlet could simply be a 360 review with a PS3 label slapped on it. :(

These threads always bring out the best console warriors.

I saw the 360 crowd strike first. WHo's keeping score, I gotta get the coffee to digest this serious turn in developments.

It seems like the issue of slowdown is widespread but some just haven't put the time into it. I do think at its best (on PC) it's GOTY. Not that the PC is free of stubborn issues but I said it in several threads, Beth is lucky that there is powerful HW out there to bail their shoddy coding and engine issues.

I just put my Skyrim for PS3 on ebay. It is selling for around $40 used, and that is what I paid with my $20 KMart Gaming Coupon.

I also purchased Saints Row The Third off of Best Buy. I have heard so many good things about it, and Saints Row The Third is $40 right now for both console versions at Best Buy.

Seems like an even trade out for me. I can rid myself of the crappy Skyrim PS3, and get a fun, open world game that appears to run really well on PS3.

However, I did feel dirty selling my PS3 version of Skyrim considering it is such an awful port. I wanted to say exactly WHY I was selling it in my auction, but I didn't want it to hurt the value.

Heck, now I sound like Bethesda. I feel even dirtier.

My problem with SR3 is that sometimes my Brother, Dad, Mom, /whoever, likes to watch me game. It would be terrible for them to watch me run around with big rubber dong's in my hands lol.

Then you have a bigger problem than SR3 ;)

Last christmas we got our mother a vibrator. It would have been much worse to get her a M16!

Uhh, while SR3 on PS3 is better than the 360 version, I'd argue that Skyrim runs better most of the time on PS3. Saints Row 3 has a very unstable, often poor framerate. The game feels like shit on all three platforms, really.

Keep playing. You'll see why people are in an uproar eventually. I'm creeping up on 8 MB and I have to reload and fight dragons at night if they show up in towns because townsfolk are asleep and the lighting and shadows aren't killing the framerate at night. guards still fight but it isn't nearly as taxing. I can hear my PS3 crying in day fights. Painful to say the least

People saying that Bethesda (or Howard) lied about there being a new engine are wrong. The first thing we ever heard about the engine was that is was the Creation engine, built for Skyrim, from old assets and Gamebryo. Just because they called it Creation doesn't mean anything and is what most developers already do.

I think you are the one missing the point. They went out of their way to rebrand the engine, to allay any concerns that would stem from the widely known performance issues of the old engine.

The rebrand was them distancing themselves from past issues. And since they never actually fixed those issues, the rebrand seems disingenuous.

A recall is a good idea. The game isn't playable and shouldn't be sold to anyone. I hope anyone here at GAF that works in retail will tell fellow consumers not to buy it on PS3.

Apparently the problem is a memory leak. Should every piece of software with a memory leak be recalled and the company sued?

They also specifically said that it was based on Gamebryo. It is probably called something else because it is a big step up from what they were doing in Oblivion. And I don't think anyone but the most hardcore of gamers cares what the engine is that is being used. So what? Don't rebrand it and maybe lose 100,000 copies sold because of some nerds being upset it is not a new engine?

Edit: Huh, no I understand some of the confusion and concede that I was wrong on one point. Someone named Nick Breckon tweeted that Skyrim used a new engine LINK but I know Todd Howard said Creation was based on Gamebryo, so there were different things being said by different people.

Apparently the problem is a memory leak. Should every piece of software with a memory leak be recalled and the company sued?
It's not a memory leak. Run out of RAM and you have to stream data . This causes thrashing . The solution is to streamline RAM usage which ruins persistency. Which is fine by me for nonessential items like cups and baskets.

Obviously I'm guessing like anyone else, but all signs point to this and I can't imagine anyone picking basket games over questlines and framerate for more than 24 hours of in-game time.

Id gladly trade that for some game stability.

Augh. Whiterun is starting to become a pain to maneuver. The overworld is still okay as are dungeons... Just passed the 8MB mark on the save file and 40 hours on game time.

I really don't want to have to start all over again on the 360, but damn if it isn't a fun game...
