Videogame facts that blow your mind (SuperMarioBros. SHOCKING SECRET INSIDE p #70)

Yeah, I noticed that too. I'm pretty sure it is a sack and not a tail, otherwise what's up with the cloth in his hands.

It's a pretty bizarre shape for a bird's tail anyway, but the cloth in its hand pretty much seals the deal on it being a sack.

Edit: Sack confirmed.

Nope:

BW Pokedex
It carries food rolled up in its tail. It has the habit of sharing food with people lost in mountains.

It's tail IS the sack. :0

Here's a fun little one I found out by accident yesterday.

Minesweeper in Windows 7 has rumble.

Try plugging in an XBOX 360 controller and click on a mine. You can also play the game with the controller, although I can't see why you'd ever want to do that, but you can.

The corners of a polygon, i.e. the basic building blocks of a 3D model. To specify a polygon, you have to say where the vertices are.

To elaborate a bit more, there is a flat corresponding set of points called "UV's"

These are used in conjunction with the texture image that gets applied to the model. If the UV points are too small for the corresponding polygon, the image will stretch across the model. And if the edges of the UV's aren't lined up, you will see a seam on the model, where the parts of the image don't match perfectly.

The Lara croft model probably had messy looking seams on the back, hence the backpack.

Since the UV layout is flat, often times it has to wrap strangely around the 3D model. Texturing is always a balance of stretching and seams, and applying those for the best results.

It works like wrapping a gift in wrapping paper, and making sure that it looks like an unbroken piece of paper is covering the shape. Since most models are more complex than a simple box, this process gets exponentially more complicated.

Thanks for this. I like it when people explain stuff short and good like this to get a bit more knowledge about gaming development.

It's a very simple shape. It's likely it required a similar number of vertices as the ones previously in her back.

so they didn't add a backpack to her back, her backpack *is* her back? Like a huge disgusting tumour, only with more storage options.

Actually I'm pretty sure that Lara's shirt was solid shaded and not textured. My guess is that it was more of an animation thing. Probably her back looked bad in animation during her various acrobatics and having a backpack there made it easier to make all that geometry in the back (which gets a lot of focus when she's climbing, etc) static.

The attached photo of your mii in the "activity log"-mainscreen is actualy no photo. It seems static(like a photo should be in the first case) but, in fact, it isn't.
if you look closely you can see your mii blinking sometimes

Ha! There have been several calls for that sort of thing in this thread, and attempts have been made in the past. Problem is that people aren't really interested in doing anything like that, just in asking for the nebulous "we" to do it. You're welcome to reference my own personal tracking system if you ever feel like looking stuff up. There are well over a thousand tags, though, so it's unwieldy.

[Edit: You can't just use a list of games because many of the Facts here involve stuff about entire consoles or other hardware, characters who were in multiple games, and notes about entire game series]

There are a ton of super mario bros 3 posts in this thread, but I don't recall or see anything like king mario.

Ok, thread saved, that is actually quite mind blowing! Surprised that they'd actually put the effort in!

True. I was planning to do a simple wordpress blog with one post for each secret and tags refering to only the game and system, but i bumped into three problems

1) Im a lazy bastard.

2) I dont know how each gafer feels about me posting their findings on a blog of my own and im too lazy to ask one by one.

3) Most images used in the early pages of the thread are now gone. This made some secrets impossible to understand. I could try to get in contact with each gafer who posted each secret, but then we go back to problem number 2.

But who knows? Maybe if everybody says its ok and if i can do everything sloooowly, maybe i could pull it off...

Two of the weapons are based on (Neo)Zeon MS? Hnnnng!

I wonder if Squaresoft based anymore of their mecha designs on Gundam. I know in Xenogears that (spoilers for the endgame)
Xenogears highly resembles the V2 Gundam in a lot of ways which might've been intentional considering the symbolism behind the energy wing design and some of its attacks resemble what you would see in G Gundam. They also spotlighted Elly's Gear having the equivalent of Newtype Funnels way early in the game.

I think Gundam is simply embedded into the subconscious of all mecha designers.

Funny enough, this was mentioned (but not presented in a jpg fashion) in the very second page of this thread. Here is the link

Yeah, i decided to give it a go on the "create a full database for all this" project. It will be slow and ill ignore most of the "this song sound like this song!" crap. But im having fun up until now.

Not that mindblowing in itself, it just shocked me I never connected the dots.

The protagonist from Taito's Kiki Kaikai is named Sayo-chan.

NSOto.jpg

And the shrine maiden character from Shikigami no Shiro (published by Taito) is named Sayo Yuki.

This was years before the Time Gal Reika thing.

Lara Croft wears a backpack in the original Tomb Raider because all of her verts meet in her back and it looked bad. So they put a backpack on to hide the mess.

Source on this?

Was this really the issue, though? Her back doesn't even seem to be textured, just a constant blue color. I'd rather think that Gouraud shading was the cause of bad looking lighting on her back if they had tesselated it in some weird way, but they would easily have fixed that. Don't know if I believe the first claim (yet). Also, looking up tomb raider videos on youtube made me realize how horrible the lack of perspective correct interpolation on the PSX was :(

It would be awesome if you could just pick a game and it would show all the cool facts from this thread

According to a SpotPass message that went out this morning, when you see dandelions on screen in Super Mario 3D Land, you can blow into the microphone to blow them away.

Not really mindblowing, but I did play through the whole game a couple of times without figuring that out. :P

That´s the idea with the blog.

But im using tags to do it, and wordpress insists in putting em in a "cloud" format. I wish they could just list all the tags alphabetically in a vertical list with the number of entries right in front of every game name.

But for now, i didnt even changed the default banner, so one step at the time.

EDIT: at page 4 there´s one info about zelda´s dungeons being one single image that i cant make sense out of it because the image is broken. If someone could help... (its not the dungeons spelling "zelda", its something else)

Every dungeun fits a square because it takes less space in the cartridge if everything is in the same "grid".

Kinda like this ... but i remember it being much more perfectly fitted

---------------
edit : the empty spaces are probably the sidescrolling parts that you can see it here

On a similar note (Not massively mindblowing, but useful to note, and was helpful for me when actually trying to map the things myself.):

Here's a bunch of maps from one of the dungeons in Ultima 4:

Z40H5.gif

(You can find more at http://www.uo.com/archive/ultima4/dungeons/index.html)

Each floor is an abstract shape, right?

Wrong!

Each level is actually on an 8x8 grid. They *look* like they're abstractly shaped because the grid is wraparound, but in real terms they loop all over the place to all fit into that nice, small, well-defined package.

If you can customize the theme, you can use get_tags().

I guess this fits the bill of the thread and is probably old.

Unused Great Fairy cutscenes in Majora's mask. The spin attack and double defense ones seem fairly complete, I guess they couldn't think of scenes to go with the other great fairy powers (or the technology didn't allow them to). In a way we see similar things in future Zelda games; namely Twilight Princess
The knight you learn techniques off

If you can customize the theme, you can use get_tags().

I dont think i can... it seems only upgrading (AKA giving money to then) you can customize your theme.
For free, only header change.

=======================

Page 8, i have a problem.

At least 2 "secrets" are just people posting pictures.
But recently Neogaf forbidden the use of certain image holders.
Te result is the pic being replaced by censored addresses like "i29.************/2w4jked.jpg"

Do anybody knows what the **** stands for?
Do you think its possible if i replace the **** for the real name of the image holder, i can see this image? After all this time?

You could always get some webspace on your own and install wordpress on there (get it on wordpress.org). Then you can make your own themes and all that jazz.

Probably been posted but in Pokemon Red and Blue when you trade an old man on Cinnabar Island a Raichu, you can talk to him afterwards and he will tell you it went and evolved. This was one of the main reasons the rumors of a "Pikablu" existed.

So here's something from Final Fantasy 13, though it may not necessarily be mind blowing-
In
Oerba, you will notice humanoid Cie'th and some small Cie'th here and there: The small Cie'th are most likely children; look at where the smaller Cie'th are situated within the village: The first ones you see would be children playing in the middle there, and there are small Cie'th in and next to the school.

In Pokemon Yellow a random trainer on Route 9 is replaced from the original trainer in Red/Blue with a "Youngster" who only battles with a Sandshrew. If you talk to him after beating him he will inform you that you beat his 100 battle winning streak.

AJ_Yellow.png

This is actually based off of a character found in the anime AJ, who appeared in the episode The Path to the Pokemon League, who also battled with a Sandshrew and had a 100 win streak until he fought Ash.

200px-AJ.png

While it makes sense considering Pokemon Yellow was supposed to be more like the anime, this is one of the few basic trainers that was actually replaced to fit the anime, and most people never noticed.

And if you're in that neighborhood, check this out as well: in the schoolhouse, there's a clock, and on it you can see that the Pulsian day is broken into 13 (or a multiple of 13) hours.

And on top of that, if you look closely you can see a photograph of Vanille and Fang on one of the desk tables. Looks like they lived together.

That's easy to explain...in the Japanese Blue version, which the text of the International RB was drawn from, it was a Kadabra for Graveler trade, two Pokemon who evolve when traded. They switched it back to the Electrode for Raichu trade like it was in the Japanese Red and Green, but didn't change the text.
