The Last of Us (Naughty Dog): Hold One Second

I'm interested in seeing if they'll make us choose a character or have us focus on just one, which would seem like it would be Ellie. I actually doubt this will have co-op for some reason.

Some details from the trailer: The girl was excited to find ammo, and it was only like 4 bullets, and they put a lot of emphasis on survival ("Day and night, all we do is survive"). It seems like there's a good chance there will be a lot of survival elements and slightly less shooting than a lot are expecting?

Game just wasn't that good, bro
That's just, like, your opinion man.
Mine too, I think. Hard to say so soon after it came out, but it's certainly in the same league as UC2.

I'm in the same boat. As of right now, I think I slightly prefer 3 (mostly because chapters 11-16 is quite possibly the best segment of any game I've ever played). However, they're extremely close in quality, and I can never really understand how so many people loved UC2, but dislike 3. They're extremely similar games.

I think it's probably not focused on combat. It could be focused on trapping zombies in the environment, using the environment against them, working together to defeat them...I mean it's obviously not going to be like Resident Evil with the stupid downward stabbing knife.

I bet for something melee-QTE with enviroment and few weapons, with the guy and some stealth based areas, with the girl, when we can't fight (at least no in melee), and we get "dead" if we are found by the enemies (like the child stages in Siren).

One could only hope...they certainly have the engine that could pull that off.

PS4 = 2014 or later

Well the trailer said its running on PS3...

Makes me wonder if Naughty Dog is breaking its one IP a gen rule :D

PS4 = 2014 or later

I've been saying 2015 for years and I've been called crazy. People forget that the console isn't even sub 200 dollars yet. They've also still got their big devs working on big games for the system. Some games haven't even been shown like Quantic Dream's new game, Guerilla's new IP, and Santa Monica's new game.

Shit, you just gave me the idea of how awesome a big budget, old gothic vampire game from ND would be.

That is what i was hoping for with Cv:LoS, since it was a reboot and all. Something more of a "traditional" vision of the vampire myhtos.

Lord, I cant wait for this industry to mature.

Me too. We're right.

Well since it's for PS3 Super Slim launch it's kind of for a new console.

Oh, wait! wtf? I didn't say that!

I know Lowenthal's voice - it isn't him. Just looked up a clip of Cipes. His voice is much too high. If anything, looks like these two might be playing fellow teenagers.

Edit: if that pic is involved with The Last of Us at all.

Yep, you're right. A quick look at imdb suggests that it's unrelated to The Last of Us.

I'm thinking they build somewhat on the chase sequences they started in UC3 and maybe even some of the stealth.

I'm so curious... can't believe we have zero info. :?

Game Designer =/= Creative Director

Uncharted 2 was Amy's baby.

This is Druckmann's baby.

Different teams. Though it is worth noting, Druckmann did the Eye of Indra comics.

Looks really nice, and I particularly like the logo for some reason. Shame I'm too much of a wimp to play something like this :(

Oh shit, I hadn't even thought of stealth lol. I really hope there are some stealth elements to the game. The way they handled it in UC2/3 shows a lot of potential.

Incredible potential with this premise, thank god it's Naughty Dog tackling it

Was away the entire day. On cursory look, pairing a man with a savvy teenage girl in a monster infested world seems interesting. They may yet find more untrusting and untrustworthy survivors.

I am hyped through the roof if this is a legitimate survival horror game. That genre has sorely been missed this generation outside of Siren. Opportunity missed by many, many devs.

I don't know anything about the actual 'game' portion. Hell, guys we don't even know if this is first person or third person view. But as far as characters and story go, the trailer sold me.

People claim there are so many zombish creature games but how many of those are just isometric themed shoot-em-ups? 99.9%? Exactly. I'm tired of zombies devoid of substantive narrative. I can't think of a developer more aptly equipped to remedy this aspect than Naughty Dogs.

Well... not if you fail. Then you get straight-up shooter.

Stealth was always just an option in UC and you really only get one shot at it before it devolves into shooting mobs.

I don't think ND has demonstrated a type of stealth gameplay that fits this premise. They would have to do things a bit differently, I think, if they wanted to retain tension. Especially if stealth was something they were trying to compel on the player through limited ammo or whatever. Uncharted stealth wouldn't work in that case. And allowing players to just mow down mobs means you lessen the necessity of stealth.

It's kind of tricky... I love seeing how devs tackle these problems. Generally you get very traditional answers, but sometimes there's a neat solution in there.

It's not an original idea, but Uncharted wasn't really something brand new either. If it looks great, has a decent script and voice acting, I'm there.

This just goes to show, you can't make everybody happy. Because I don't think it looks very interesting. Whole zombie, parasite thing has been done to death.

Lord Error

Insane For Sony
That looked absolutely fn insanely amazingly great, and I have no idea how on Earth was ND capable of making two super-high profile games at the same time. Compared to other AAA games teams, they are unusually small.

It doesn't have to be gun centric.

Glad I don't play the 40 zombies games that come out monthly, I'm not tired of the genre at all. What have I actually played with zombies this gen that was actually good, L4D?

Bring it on Naughty Dog!!

Enough with people claiming this is just another generic zombie game. This is Naughty Dog we're talking about. This is not going to be another shoot-em-up, hack and slash zombie action game (not to mention they are NOT zombies). This is going to be a story driven game about a two people in a post-apocalyptic world. Anyone really think this is going to resemble Left 4 Dead or Dead Island is any shape or form? Absolutely not.

I don't know if that was a zombie, but it was some sort of turrible beast.

Finally, though, the game I've been waiting for: Something end of the worldish that looks awesome and isn't brown.

That was a pretty cool trailer, but holy christ the last shred of Geoff's credibility is down the drain in my eyes. Yeah, I sure can't fucking believe Naughty Dog showed off an in-engine cutscene that looks pretty great. That is definitely a PS3 exclusive I cannot BELIEVE.

How about the fact that Naughty Dog essentially pulled a new game out of thin air. They had a secret team working on this for 2 years. Nobody saw this coming.

How could you not be surprised?

I guarantee you it will not be a horror game. If you are looking for Siren, this will not be it.

Survival though, yes.

It doesn't have to be gun centric.

Doesn't have to be, no.

But if you're making assumptions based on what's come before... it's more likely to be gun centric than anything else.

And if it's not gun centric, and if they do stealth, it will have to be a different kind of stealth than we've seen in Uncharted. That's all I was saying.

I think it is important to mention that Sony and Naughty Dog never specifically stated that there were "horror" elements in the press release. They only mention "survival" and "action."

I think there will be a "horror" element, but it will stem from the survival element. I expect a lot of running, hiding and constantly moving from place to place while being chased to be a common element of the game. Not so much direct "horror" that is sell-able as opposed to indirect horror built through extreme tension and suspense. Personally, I want that more than the direct "use loud noises and jump out scares" type of horror.

I sense that the survival and action elements will be using the devices you have to the best of your ability. Remember, "action" doesn't necessarily mean shooting guns and blowing stuff up. A lot of running, jumping, evading and external stuff like seeing other people get attacked or a mass of mutant infected things clamoring around a chain link fence looking to get at a family or something could all be considered "action." I think we'll see a lot of extremely emotional set pieces. I don't know, like a daughter trying to wake up her dead father, only to have a bunch of those things slowly walk up and pull her away from her father, hearing nothing but the screams and mass of others joining in... I don't know, a bunch of shocking, emotionally tough scenes to really drive home the survival portion of the game.

There will most certainly be guns, knives and fighting, but something tells me that it won't be a huge, main part of the game. Maybe because the creatures you are fighting will have strength in numbers and you won't have the equipment to fight all of them off, you'll have to choose when you want to use what you have at the potential of having nothing in the future.

With Naughty Dog's ability to tell a story and make the player have an emotional connection with the characters, I think this game will be the game that the original Dead Island trailer wanted to be. Basically, I trust Naughty Dog more than other developer in the world to be able to nail "The Road" in video game form.

In other words, this is what Resident Evil 5 (and likely Resident Evil 6) should have been.

I hope to god if they do platforming they completely rework what's become stale in the Uncharted games.

The action-platforming in Uncharted is without equal... but there regular "break in the action" platforming is ZZZzzzzzzZZZzZZzzzzzzzzzz.

Seriously.

If these people climb in the game I hope it's a completely new animation system, and that there's some actual risk involved. Otherwise I'd rather not see it at all.
