The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Performance discussion

No idea :/

Anyone know how to get rid of the fucking red tint on the menu? accidently did saveini and now it wont go away. So fucking annoying.

edit: fixed it by deleting a weird ini file in the Data folder. It was named after a mod I had... The culprit lines were here but I deleted the whole thing. Now my FOV is at 80 but I have no idea how.

I've been trying to squeeze the most fps but still keeping the settings high.

GTX 480
phenom 3.2ghz x4
4gm ddr3

I am willing to sacrifice some visuals for a smooth near 60 fps. On ultra, with shadows lowered I am getting 45-60 outdoors and 28-30 overlooking towns (cant seem to bring this up really).

What is the major things to bring down in order to get the most FPS bang for the buck? So far reading this thread most of what I've used is to make things look better while sacrificing FPS.

So 1.3 still crashes randomly to the dessktop? I'm running no mods, is there anything that helps (and has evidence)?

Try Tytanis.

Pretty much the same thing. I think.

With Tytanis you can craft so many broken / unrealistic things that it just breaks the game even further, I won't recommend this for that exact reason .. unless you're into that kind of thing.

Yeah, checked out the craftables with Tytanis and I know I'll be crafting all sorts of high-end crap, that just ruins my experience. I do however want a mod that allows me to smelt down the stuff I pick up but can't find one that does just that and works.

Anyone can recommend a simple smelt down mod that works with 1.3?

The main reason there has been so many crashes is due to RAM. The game only uses 2GB on its own. If you use the 4 GB methods, crashes should be much less frequent. I used to crash every 10 minutes or so, but ever since allowing the game to use 4GB, I hardly get crashes.

Yea it needs a lot of self restraint.

I got rid of it and started using the Arrow Smith mod. Much fairer in crafting arrows and not game breaking.

The better inventory sorting mod is a must. Came out a few days and it's pretty awesome. Haven't used it much though.

Is there any way to get both 4GB Skyrim (or similar) working with Radeon Pro yet? I've had a little look around but I haven't been keeping up to date with the thread.

Any help would be appreciated. My system barely manages 30fps with vanilla Skyrim, but I'm having to use the 4GB mod at the moment to stop it crashing.

Yeah, sorry dude, but why would you play it on a laptop, Asus of all things...

Yeah, I didn't mean to say you should get one, but it just eludes me, unless you're travelling at least 1/3 of your time, a gameing laptop makes little sense. Also, worse at that, I hate Asus :)

Honestly, just shut up because 1. you're giving the guy shit for no reason and 2. you're talking out of your ass. Asus makes the most reliable laptops around, and their G series gaming laptops are top notch. I've owned two of them and they have been rock solid and extremely well built. That laptop is on par/past most people's desktops.

Not sure, but Bethesda are patching in LAA support this week, so that should solve your problem.

The other smelting mod is pretty broken balance wise as well. You get WAY too much resources back after smelting. For example, making leather bracers requires 1 leather + 2 leather strips (which is equivalent to 1/2 leather.) So leather bracers=1.5 leather. You get 1 leather back from smelting it. With a recovery rate of 66%, you can max out smithing absurdly quickly (and smithing is already too fast!)

A few weeks ago in this thread I posted about how the best thing for an RPG UI would be to take as many cues as possible from other data management software, and that one of the most important relatively recent UI patterns in that is the text-based filter. I also said that this shouldn't really be that hard to implement in Actionscript.

Look what the SkyUI project added just recently:

In my opinion that, as well as the customization support and the ability to sort by a variety of characteristics makes it pretty much the best inventory UI in any RPG ever.

I installed 1.3, removed all my ini-files and mods. Now my shadows looks like this. I'm running everything maxed out in the launcher except for AA.
Any suggestions on how to improve on the jaggy shadows? Changing AA won't do shit.
I started by installing 1.3, removing ini-files and then run but had the same issue, thought it might be some incompatible mod, but nothing changed when removing those.

Increase the shadow resolution and adjust the iBlurDeferredShadowMask setting to make them softer. That's about all you can do.

Thanks, initially i thought it was 1.3 but reverting back to 1.2 did nothing. Will start tweaking from scratch again.

Play around with shadow settings for sure but try and find a better middle ground for outdoor shadows.

And always make backup up your "good ini's". I have my best ini's backed up just for the times when the game decides to reset them.

I got a new laptop yesterday, ASUS G74SX, and surprisingly the game runs like crap most of the times. I'm in a closed section (
The Ratway Vaults
) and the game dips to 18 sometimes, and the framerate always hover around 30. I only installed the 4GB mod and done the GeForce tweaks. In addition to that, I noticed that when I talk to a character, I almost can't hear their voice. I have to turn the analog a little so that I can hear them. Very very annoying. (did the sound tweak in the OP, didn't fix this) EDIT: sound is butchered evrywhere: when I unsheathe, there is no sound at all. No sound for arrows getting charged, nor spells when you choose them, nor horse riding, etc etc. EDIT #2: Appears to be a headphones issue. Without them the sound is perfect. Weird.

Note: I transferred my save from the 360 using Modio. I hope that's not the source of all this, as I really don't wanna restart my 80-hours journey. :(

i7 2670QM 2.2, 16 GB RAM, GTX 560M 3GB, SSD.

Forgive my ignorance; any help will be greatly appreciated. I got this mainly for Skyrim and I'm not pleased. >_<
1. Did you update to the latest Nvidia drivers?

2. For the sound issues, try turning your Windows audio down to 44100khz.

Let's try again...

i7 2.2Ghz
16 GB RAM
GeForce GTX 560M 3GB

Portal 1 runs on 200fps. Oblivion runs on 60 capped. Skyrim, however, runs on 17fps even on the lowest settings. My native resolution is 1080p. I tried 720p, and it runs 30~40fps on Medium. Ultra @ 720p doesn't get above 28fps.

Why is this happening?

CPU limitation?

Yeah i usually always make a backup but it's been a while since i've touched the game so didn't bother to this time.

This is with your 6990 skyrimprefs.ini. I have similar hardware.
It might just be that this issue is inside the whiterun player house but i'm having trouble just dropping it and start playing. I can't remember it looking this shitty a couple of weeks ago.

That is how the vanilla shadows look in the whiterun house, at least in my experience.

Try iBlurDeferredShadowMask=3 or 4

The 560M is nearly as fast as a desktop 5770, so we should be seeing much better performance than this out of the box, especially on Nvidia hardware.

I want to check some things. Some are simple and may come off like silly questions.

Do you see 8 threads in Task Manager?

Are you on Power Saver?

Have you done any shadow tweaks?

Run CPU-Z while Skyrim is open and report the CPU speeds.

Run GPU-Z while Skyrim is open and check the Sensor tab to make sure the 560M is at full 3D clocks.

I'm also curious to know what kind of performance to get on the default driver your machine shipped with originally.

Just installed some hi-res texture packs.
Dear god! Now it looks like a modern PC game.

Jesus Bethesda, why can a bunch of amateurs outdo you in a matter of weeks what you did in years?
I'm serious baffled, how hard would it have been to do HD textures then downgrade them for consoles. A fucking batch job in Irfanview can do that.
Thank fuck i went PC for this one.

Whic texture packs are you using that you are so pleased with?

They can't. Most texture packs either look like they've been through a shitty sharpen filter in photoshop, or they don't mesh with the overall design aesthethic at all.

Anyone using ModOrganizer getting BSODs? I started getting them like crazy, even after disabling all mods and reverting to vanilla settings. As long as I launched the game through MO I would BSOD after a while. Went back to launching from the exe and haven't had any problems.

Eh yes they can and they have. You'll always get people early on in a new games release bringing out their amazing "HD IMPROVEMENT TEXTURES!" mod which just consists of shitty filters cause they want to be the first. That's more or less over with now though thankfully. Skyrim HD and WRP are what HD texture replacement mods should be like.

screenshots please. Thanks.

I heard a lot of praise for Skyrim HD, but when I checked it out it still results in a oversharpened, shimmering mess that is also less congruent with the overall design than the original textures are. May be usable with 4x SGSSAA, but below that I'd stay away.

Let's try again...

Something is clearly off with your settings or system. Have you monitored your cpu/gpu frequencies? Since it's a laptop it could be frequency scaling.

note to self: never mess with the .inis and nvidia control panel at the same time before testing.

Massive lag all of a sudden and I'm not sure what's causing it. >_>

Just wanted to let you guys know that one of the mods i have installed removes the enchantments on the thieves guild armor set.
I think it might be either Vals Meltdown, Lost Art of The Blacksmith or More Craftables. The Armor retains it's bonus (might have been because i had it equipped) but the head, arms and legs (which i had on a mannequin) do not have the different bonuses.

The view from Bards Leap wasn't great (I only have the default ugrids and the weather sucked) so I decided to jump off instead.

I havn't done any shadow tweaks. I'm in "High Performance" setting. I took these CPU and GPU pics whil running the game in Windowed Mode, at 1440x810 (it was still very bad).

I downloaded the latest stable (not beta) driver for my GPU, but will install it after I hear your thoughts on the pics above. I said it before and I'll say it again: I'm a downright noob who wants to have some fun, so forgive my ignorance towards everything. Thanks for the help, man.

EDIT: Read the description in this video. That's the performance I should be getting.

Hi, just picked up the CE (price cut!) for the PC and am wondering whether I'll seen any discernible improvement over the 360 version or if I should just keep the PC sealed and sell it on? I've put a fair number of hours into the 360 version, but not so many that it'd be a terrible ask to do it again - I got sidetracked by several other games about a week after release and am only now set to return to Skyrim.

I have a 2011 iMac running Windows 7 64-bit, so my specs are...

2.7ghz Quad Core i5
6770m Radeon HD (512mb)
4gb RAM

The v-ram is pretty low, of course, but if I can get a noticeable 360 beater out of it, I'll be happy.

Finally, does this support a controller and if so, does it have the same interface as the console version when used with one?

Thanks!

Hmm, every file I try to download from the nexus isn't working. The NMM gives me an error saying file doesn't exist and get error trying to download them manually.

Edit: It's working now. I'm hoping with the Steam workshop we can start getting away from the nexus sites, although on the other hand the workshop will probably start off quite poor as well.

Playing the game windowed, with CPU-Z right next to it, doesn't the CPU's core speed spike higher than the default 798MHz?

For example, I'm testing at 1440x810 right now, and my 2630QM will hit 2594.0MHz.

+ Firefox and FRAPS. We're closer to solving the riddle!

Now I'm settled on this: 1366x768 AA 4, AF 16, Ultra (except for Shadow Details = Medium). Solid 30fps. Tried overclocking a bit and it started going to 40 (and never below 31). HOWEVER, anything on 1080p is absolute crap; 13~17fps. Fine, but other users with my same setup ar reporting 50fps / Ultra / 1080p, so there's something off.

I really hope we (you guys, lol) can solve this.

Try checking this tweak guide out. Might help you out.

Anyone try this mod out? It looks like it is complete for now as of today.

http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=607

2K Textures... looks like it has updated textures for basically everything. Although I see in here that there is stuff for water, rain, galaxy, etc. I guess we would have to uninstall any other mods that this would conflict with in order to make it work, but I don't know if I want to do that. It says it has tree textures and shit too so I am worried it will overwrite my Vurt's stuff.
