Wii U Speculation Thread of Brains Beware: Wii U Re-Unveiling At E3 2012

You guys disagree with this statement? ...well all of this statement?
Because I don't think Nintendo is gonna design a system that would lose money at $350 either, but that's mostly because they've never designed a $350 system before as far as I know.

I think if you just look at the system itself it won't lose money just on itself. I think if you add in the U Pad, and potentially a WiiMote+ AND you add in the possibility of a pack in game... I mean, unless you think one or more of those is not likely, but take what you think the likely cost of the system itself will be and add those components.

I really doubt they'll sell the WiiU at a loss, and unless they've gone completely crazy I believe they will shoot for a lower price.

We don't know enough about the specs to say anything either way. Them losing a small amount at that price in this economy is possible.

To make people laugh, I guess.

He does make me chuckle at times though.

This strikes me as reasonable since there is a sense that a WiiMote+ in box is probable. I also expect a pack in Wii U Sports type game to help the casuals flock to it. $329/$349 would be a bargain for all of that.

This is actually not true. The GameCube was the only Nintendo system that sold at a LOSS at launch so far.

Me personally I'm guessing the BOM of the console and controller together before adding anything else to be somewhere between $340 and $370. A Wiimote+ and a game promoting the controller won't affect that too much thankfully, but that's what I'm looking at for Nintendo to determine their retail price.

We've already received multiple indications from Nintendo that it would cost more than Wii did at launch. An early rumor said that the BOM was between $350 and $400. And then we have Iwata saying they debating on whether or not they will sell for a loss. But the loss won't be $100+ like MS and Sony have done that's for sure on hardware and accessories (before other operating expenses). Nintendo's will be $50 max IMO depending on what they include with the console.

I disagree because it was wrong and it was pointed out to him before in this thread that it was wrong.

Nintendo decided to take an apparently expensive approach with their controller, and they are going to have to spend a little to get the power at least to a relatively moderate/acceptable level. Financial sacrifices are going to have to be made by them to achieve those things.

And what about GameCube?
The GC was in an entirely different situation.

The system was more than capable enough of getting the multiplatform releases, except for those mini-discs (bye GTA and others).

The problem with the GC was Nintendo's decline since the Snes days resulting in a very low installed base combined with Sony's absolute market dominance and Nintendo's so-so relationship with third parties (both Sony and MS are way more active in getting third party support). The first two facts meant you only really needed the PS2 to reach mass market success and MS attitude towards third parties meant it ended up getting more multiplatform titles (also Xbox's hardware superiority and PC similarities got them a few exclusives).

Wii got the sales but it didn't have the hardware (old architecture, extremely low performance compared to the competition and a totally different control method), plus its audience was mostly a non-traditional one.

Based on the available information, Wii U will be slower than the competition performance-wise but its architecture will be closer to MS's and Sony's next systems. That should help them get multiplatform releases, even if they look worse on Nintendo's system. Depending on the installed base software sales for those multiplatform titles could be a problem but that's another story.

Also Nintendo seems to want to recover part of that traditional market (or core market as they like to call it) and third party support now that they have seen first hand how unpredictable/unstable that new market they reached with the Wii is. Just look at the 3DS.

I don't know how it will result but at least they seem to be going for a more balanced system, a system that appeals to all kinds of gamers. Or I hope so.

I got banned for less than what he does in every damn post he makes in this thread.
And it's not just this thread, any Nintendo thread he posts in is the same crap.
Just put him on ignore and never ever ever click "View post."
Problem solved.

Yeah, it's weird how some trolling is ok but other trolling isn't.

Hell I've tried to be civil to Lucky.

Sent him a PM and he never answered back.

Honestly, I'm starting to warm up to him like I have some Libertarians around here. I can't hate someone just because I disagree with them in some minor ways when we agree in other more important ways.

I will admit to getting the occasional laugh when I read his posts now.

Quite honestly, putting people on ignore is a bad idea.

You have to learn to accept there are people with all kinds of opinions and attitudes out there.

And if you can't deal with that... well, then you have a problem yourself.

Honestly maybe you need a mod to rename this thread the the ultimate Nintendo circlejerk.

I'm not a fan of ignore either myself. Just seems childish.

This coming from the guy that earned the tag FIGS IN MY RECTUM, by posting FIGS IN MY RECTUM.

No need to destroy whatever goodwill I have for you by being a legitimate ass.

Every single one of his posts is worthless.

Every. Single. One.

Plus, he's a troll. If you don't respond to the troll, you can't feed the troll.

Wow, really? That high? I would never have guessed it.

Now that it seems they are (have) added support for 2 controllers, it might be a nice stream of additional revenue to offset the costs. If rumours are true and the thing costs something like US$30 to make, they could easily sell it for double that - no?

Assuming, of course, they have enough software that will have added value with 2 controllers.

With that logic, they took the Wii and made it the system first out of the gate in order to build install base. In the long term it was a success, but 3rd parties once again placed the blame on slipshod motion controls, not being in HD, and Wii "being for casuals and kiddies".

Motion control is only as good as the skill of the programmer developing it.

In that sense, Motion Plus is more about making it easier on the programmer than increasing accuracy, although an increase in accuracy would be an obvious side effect to the programmer's job being made easier.

The standard controller would then include this magnetic sensor ( I think it's supposed to combat gyro drifting? Meaning no more calibration mid-game.) and any current existing WiiMotion+ controller would still be usable with the Wii U if they only buy this cheap magnetic sensor dongle.

Gyro drifting, which is a common problem with Move, hasn't been an issue with Motion Plus since developers figured out they could use the IR bar to calibrate the controller. Heck, the only game that has ever asked me to recalibrate the controller is Wii Sports Resort, and that title is obviously a very early implementation of the technology.

Just launch with a Madden and a Call of Duty, add two player to Pikmin 3 and BOOM! Controllers flying off shelves.
I haven't played Madden in years, but if the WiiU version allowed me to draw up my own plays on the tablet I'd be all over that.

Now THAT'S a proper coaches mode.

I think there is a reason to why they are concerned about controller cost. I think the controller costs a minimum $50 to make. And the console's hardware would makeup the difference.

But accessories are supposed to be where the companies make money. So if this were sold separately Nintendo probably would have to have an MSRP of at least $99 IMO to cover R&D, shipping, their profit and retailer profit. I think they have a much smaller margin to work with unlike previous controllers.

Wii U Set to Launch at $600?

ruh roh!

hah, I wonder why they went with such an arbitrary and unbelievable placeholder price.

Also, why the hell do people respond to lucky anymore? He's the biggest tool I've come across on this board, and that's sayin something. I don't understand how people like him are permitted to act like asshats on the board without being reprimanded. All the tiniest offenses result in bans, but he's able to run around like a clown intentionally trolling without consequence.

No.
In fact, we had a thread stating why you can't trust that source.

I feel better about myself.

I seriously think if there wasn't a uPad the console would launch at $299. But that thing makes me think it'll get bumped up to 349, but I really don't know the cost of that lone (to make).

No way in helllll this shit goes above 349.

Hey, you can still be crazy, but you've gotten markedly more reasonable in the past few weeks so...

... As far as you know. *shifty eyes*

Also, broken image.

I'm still sticking with $269.99-329.99 being the most likely range.

I was just going on old Pachter's US$25 for the controller comment he made a while ago as it's the only thing I have to go on wrt the pad pricing. Probably more fool me to think he might know :P
