There is some pretty glarring differences:

  • Freeza was responsible for the death of Goku's entire race, the destruction of his planet, and fucking up Namek too. Pain was responsible for being the supposed leader of Akatsuki and wanting to destroy Konoha, who ended up being a sympathetic character who finally got defeated by Naruto talking him out of it.
  • There was more of a character focus in Freeza arc rather than a storyline focus. The story was there, but was motivated completely by the characters. Pain on the other hand is completely story centric and the entire reason Naruto wants to fight Pain has nothing to do with his personal wants more-so than his want to prove to Kohona that he's awesome.
  • We also never got the worst arc in the history of manga before the Freeza arc in Dragonball which helps a lot.
  • Goku is still far more GAR than Naruto's skinny ass.

It was painfully obvious that I wasn't being literally about that comparison. If you and stat flow want to be facetitious about it, go ahead. Though you're not winning awards for being funny or witty whatsover. I said both fights were similar (having some, keyword some resemblance) but its interesting to see you drop your 2 cents into this.

  • Pein was responsible for the death of Jiraiya (someone who was really close to Naruto) and the majority of the konoha citizens death. How you missed Jiraiya's death was beyond me, its pretty much universally agreed that his death was one of the greatest moments in all of Naruto. Naruto had strong motives to fight him.
  • You're horribly misguided if you actually think this. Character focus in DBZ? The fuck? The characters do and act things in a way depending on the plot and i'm surprised you think otherwise. You're explanation as to why Naruto fights Pain is bunk. Did you forget what Jiraiya told Naruto beforehand? The whole "understanding the villains motives?" Pain had a fleshed out (not that I liked any of it) character development, and you could fully understand why he did what he did. "There isn't much depth in Freeza's character either (who does things because he's an evil asshole) the Pain arc was both more story centric and character driven than the Freeza saga.
  • opinions
  • fucking opinions how do they work?

I guess I need to make this clear before you respond, I truly and honestly don't care about either your opinions on anything Naruto related from this point on.

Caught up to where I left this manga, forgot just how good the art is.

these messed up kids are middle school kids? doesn't that make them around 10-14 years old, that teacher looking to catch a case.

so far there's been 1 rape, ge good ending has more rape.

I have to let nostalgia go on this but yeah, honestly, the Big Three are better than Dragonball ever was, but I do think Dragonball gets action and humor right while Naruto and Bleach struggle with this
Nah fuck that. P-Cell saga, Majin Vegeta saga, Return of Cooler movie, Bojack movie are godlike even today. All the talking is annoying but that action gets your blood pumping. It's all that build up, tension, and mysticism.
Are you OK?

We're here to help if you need it.
(its ok, i can say this I know him IRL)
Does he troll you IRL?
Kannagi (caught up)

Whoa! Whoaaa!!

That was a really awkward time to catch up.

For the sake of opinioning some opinions though, yeah, I like this.
OK, I got to get on this.

Yep, all the time :P

Goku being more manly than Naruto is not an opinion. It's a fact.

Ok. I could argue to the ends of the earth, that its an opinion but I don't really care enough to bother. Semantics are dumb, and I even I think that Goku is more manlier than Naruto.

Still irrelevant in the grand scheme of this discussion.

Is that all?

They are highschool freshman age in america really, 14-15. Not a big difference but um..yeah

In what universe was Jiraiya's death acceptable in any form whatsoever?

The only great thing about it is that Nagato's story imo is genuinely interesting, but Jiraiya's death was pretty substandard even for Naruto at the time.
You're horribly misguided if you actually think this. Character focus in DBZ? The fuck? The characters do and act things in a way depending on the plot and i'm surprised you think otherwise. I'm not saying Dragonball does the character centric thing better, but facts are facts in this respect.

Yes there's considerable character development in the Pain arc, but there's a difference between developing your characters and being character focused. The entire Pain arc could be explained in backstory and plot and get the main picture behind it, while if you were to explain the Freeza arc it would be more like this...

"Vegeta wants to become immortal to defeat Freeza and is searching for the dragonballs."
"Piccolo fights Freeza to get vengeance for him tormenting his people and also to save Gohan and crew."
"Goku is fighting Freeza for the entirety of the Saiyan race and the fact that Freeza personally killed his father."

There is no real "plot" here just a series of events that focus on central characters who have their own character plots but aren't following a specific one.

On the other hand Nagato/Pain's entire story is related to the plot of Naruto. The flashback showing Nagato and the others as children while focusing on developing the characters, it's telling a story at the same time, that has to do with the bigger series lore partially. The entirety of the Pain arc can be explained as:

"Pain wants to destroy Kohona because he suffers from great PAIN and Naruto is the only one who can save the world."

The characters in the Pain arc focus their character development on following the plot rather than their own agendas, and that's the main difference.
I guess I need to make this clear before you respond, I truly and honestly don't care about either your opinions on anything Naruto related from this point on.
Interesting cause you responding actually suggests otherwise.

Why are you even on a forum if you don't care about people's opinions?

Golden Boy vol 1

This may just be the best thing ever.

this was a manga too? sheesh I am so LTTP

Honestly, just watch the anime, and if you have I wouldn't bother with the manga.
What? Sano gets a ton of time in the manga and has a ton of fights himself. He gets Worfed a few times but mostly to set up the villains and it's usually somewhat conditional (he's injured or something like that).
My biggest gripe with Sano is that Watsuki
NEVER LETS HIM RECOVER
so he's easily relegated to the support character. I love RK but that aspect really frustrates me, especially since he's one of the cooler characters.

The tampire is going to invade Mangaf too.

Now why did have to go and remind me of one of the worst moment in bleach(disgusting bullshit magic come back triggered by the yelling of ichigos name by orihima)?

is it to troll me or bleach?

oh it's directed at startflow

Haha no way man, that scene kicked ass. Yeah it doesn't make a lick of sense, I'm just glad Grimmjow got put in his place by Ichigo using his bare hand.

Why are you even on a forum if you don't care about people's opinions?

You're mistaken, I actually do care about the opinion of users on this site, I never said I didn't. I don't care about your opinion when it comes to anything Naruto related. My last post quoting your post notwithstanding. Its futile arguing with you when it comes to Naruto.

Alright then. "LALALALA I CAN'T HEAR YOU" tactics is some of the most vile discussion ethic out there, but okay. I cannot stop you from this, but at least I came out on the winning team here.

Right.
Stay free Big One.

So I was talking with a friend of mine earlier over Bleach when we got into a debate. He legitimately thinks that (Hueco Mundo) Kenpaichi could beat (Hueco Mundo) Ichigo in a straight up fight. His main point is that since Kenpaichi beat Nnoitra, and Ichigo barely beat Grimmjow he thinks that actually in fact makes Kenpaichi stronger. Now I loathe that ABC logic and bring up all of the things that Ichigo has over Kenpachi. Honestly if Kubo didn't keep nerfing Ichigo, i'd say he could wipe the floor with Nnoitra as well.

Namely his:
-Bankai
-Speed (Flash step > no form of flash step whatsover)
-Projectile attacks
-Hollow mask

So what say you Mangaf?

Is confronting the person that killed your master not a personal reason? Or protecting your friends for that matter as well. There was also conflicting ideologies of how to bring peace.

I didn't say that there wasn't any character plots, just that it didn't really focus on them. Read: http://neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=33492385&postcount=10059.

Freeza arc - Relies on it's character arcs to tell the story
Pain arc - Relies on it's plot to tell the story

There is plot in the Freeza arc too but it isn't as prominent or strong as the character arcs

Planetes vol 1

I had no idea the manga is totally different from the anime. I mean so far they visited most of the same plot points, but without Tanabe. Is she gonna show up in the second volume?

Either way I like this format much better. They were able to tell these stories in one volume and the pacing was very fast. Plus I like this version of Fee way more.

Btw, caught up and lost in the jeering haze of news last night that Madoka Magica won the Media Arts Festival Grand Prize was that Saturn Apartments won the Grand Prize for manga. Flawfuls at least should be happy.

(awards don't mean much yadda yadda yadda)

Golden Boy

I need not understand the later volumes with girls only the main guy was no where to be seen
it was a major let down after volume he fell in love with Kon's maid testing him at the end she was broken he rode away and the next volume started this all girls thing

Oh hey, this looks like a cool manga

Checks MU, It's only up to volume 3.

Checks official releases, oh hey Viz got 4 volumes out.

Look up volume 5 release date. It's May 25, 2012

Why do you do this to me Viz?

Might as well shell out money and get them. Chapters better not screw me with overpriced manga prices.

I got lost in the previous discussion but if I may, this caught my eye

Is that a bad thing? I seriously think that kind of attitude was what saved Nurarihyon from being mediocre forever. If a character is not popular, fuck it. It's probably that way because it sucks.

Generally speaking, yes. In the case of most shonen manga, they introduce them making them somewhat of a big deal to the story. The characters get featured often, have very key fights, and have backstories and motivations for the readers to follow. They become a staple of the universe and a reason to keep reading it and even pick your favorites. It's not just that though, they provide avenues for developing the story better. More interactions, character foiling, mirroring, etc can be done with all of these characters and that enhances the story you're trying to tell. Naruto, in particular, features the characters almost as much as Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura up until the timeskip even giving them their own fights and progression. So going backwards with it makes no sense and has actually been detrimental to Part 2.

Mind you, sidelining and retiring characers isn't necessarily a bad thing either. It's just that most manga authors don't do it in a satisfactory manner. Giving the character a sense of closure and leaving because of their own reasons or whatever would work well for slimming the cast down and it satisfies everyone.

Kenshin's anime literally got cancelled due to shitty filler. Don't watch it, just read it, imo.

This is somewhat misleading. The Kenshin anime finished the Kyoto arc and because there wasn't enough material to continue animating the story, they moved in to filler. They continued on with filler but because the manga hadn't progress enough to animate it, the show eventually ran out of steam and was canceled. So while yeah, it got canceled by filler it wasn't just because that, it was because they couldn't move on to the rest of the story. For reference, the end of the Kyoto arc was Vol 17 which was published in Oct 1997 (as I recall), during Kenshin's TV run and right near the end of the Kyoto arc. So yeah, there wasn't any post-kyoto material to animate.

Eh, I don't know if I would really include Bleach in that. If anything, the rest of the cast doesn't get sidelined enough. The Fake Karakura Town arc took way too long for that reason.

Bleach's problem is using too many of them and making them all job for the most popular ones. It's the same problem, more or less.

Viz puts out the newest chapters on their website so you could read it there instead of buying it. It's totally worth the money though. It's an amazing manga.

Its just an awkward situation as one is comparing an Exhausted Ichigo to a completely refreshed Kenpachi. I also highly doubt an Ichigo v Kenpachi fight would even go to the point where Kenpachi ditches his normal fighting style to just use Kendo.

I think Kenpachi would lose as Ichigo gets more of a power boost using the abilities he gained during visdored training for an enhanced getsuga tenshou and speed.

People should watch the Kenshin anime until the kyoto arc. The music alone merits it.

And watch some of the filler, so you can see the guys who can fight using the power of Feng Shui!

GE

So basically Yuki is happy that he's going out with Shou now because she basically thinks that she's so broken she can't have a boyfriend, so she's happy that he's with someone else now even though she's also sad at the same time (secretly, inside)? Right, of course. Eri was pretty unhappy about it though (thinking it was far too soon for him to find another love, after the breakup), but he seems to believe Yuki's front over Eri.

Also, does Shou want to go to a love hotel with him? Oh no!

... So yeah, GE is being GE.

Sugar Dark

Over already (it's only 19 chapters)? Oh well, at least it had a decent (happy!) ending... somewhat interesting series, and it was good to finally know what that other guy was. Some things about it were kind of messed up (it is a dark series), but overall it's not that bad, and as I said, it has a good ending. It feels more like a short story as opposed to an epic, but that's fine.

Bleach's probably is using too many of them and making them all job for the most popular ones. It's the same problem, more or less.

Nah, they each got their own legit fight which mostly took an equal amount of time. Yes, there was some jobbing going on, but it wasn't until later.

They are still pretty similar, but the manga has a much better ending (and oddly has a different event structure than (some) of the end of the anime. Tanabe is the girl, right? You'll see her soon enough

When I was looking online I only came across it on vizmanga.com where you had to buy it and not this one. Viz really needs to combine all their manga reading stuff into one website.

I concur. I got volume 2 this month, and plan to get the rest of the available volumes in the coming months.
Time for some Christmas shopping

Yeah, Tanabe is the girl. I was really surprised when I kept reading and reading and she never showed up. The stories never really involved her since they were all about the trio and their history and motives.

Yeah, Tanabe is the girl. I was really surprised when I kept reading and reading and she never showed up. The stories never really involved her since they were all about the trio and their history and motives.

Yeah, the manga does like to talk about the core trio but Tanabe gets her day. The anime is not bad in terms of payoff but the manga goes one step farther with the ending. It's just that paradoxically, I think if you skipped to 4-2 having only seen the anime, you'd probably wonder wtf is going on. ;)

I remember vividly that I was affected rather strongly by the Kenshin OVA... the one that chronicled his life as a Battousai and with Tomoe.

So tragic :(

This I wholeheartedly agree with the music in the Kyoto arc is so damn good.

Plus the Kenshin vs. Saitou fight need to be seen animated.

It was good and while people shit on the second OVAs the last one was pretty damn depressing.

Yep one of the best episodes of the series.

I mean, fuck Hinata tried and got fucking owned. That's kind of the point...he surpassed them a long time ago to the point he's literally the most powerful and important person in the whole Fire country. I mean, sure it's power inflation, but welcome to modern shonen.
Hinata's failure had a purpose at least. Then Naruto popped up from being crucified and turned full hollow.

She also has a good pedigree. There's no reason she should suck. (Aside from being female and not a medic.)

I hear the ovas after that was bad. Is that true?

They were interesting.

IIRC Both are set after everything with the first ep giving glimpse of Kenshin's exploits/fights plus pieces of an arc from the manga (and said arc relates to the first OVAs a bit). You have to read the manga to get the full force of that arc.

Second one continues in the story and focuses on the present time and as said in the earilier post was pretty fucking depressing :(

Yeah, and the last OVA was non-canon too -- it goes directly against the manga ending. That OVA isn't worth watching, it completely misses the point of the franchise's message... the previous OVAs are alright though, though I didn't like them more than the series (which was, for the most part, pretty good).

Yea Watsuki was hardly involved and when he actually saw it he didn't like the story due to how depressing it was. So you can basically call it non-canon right there.

And honestly i agree :(

It really is weird, it was made by the people who made the anime, or some of them, right? How could they have made all that, and then somehow thought that such a depressing message actually fit with the tone of the series? It went directly against everything the anime stood for! I don't understand what happened there... and yeah, as I said, the manga's ending contradicts it as well, so I think it's non-canon on those grounds too.

You could say it's an alternate ending, but I definitely prefer non-canon. :)

actually it fully doesn't since the manga ended when he just got his son and in the OVA his son is in his teens so its a possible scenario. But it does contradict the tone set by the ending (very much so :( ) and Watsuki and that should be enough imo.

No way man.... Kenshin deserves all the happiness he can get.

After all, how can you say that after seeing this?

you might want to place that in spoilers just in case.
