If they're really going to go with USB for their mass storage solution, and they are really listening to third parties, then it'll have 3.0.
Third parties want faster storage so that they can sell more DLC and crap.

Well we need to find a way to get them to demand it before it's too late.

Time for Operation Raindrop.

Merry Christmas, Wii U Speculation thread!
I feel like crap, but I had an awesome day anyway!
:D
Merry Christmas to all speculation-loving brains from me as well!

I finally got my consoles out of the boxes and in a functional state (have been (3)DS-exclusive for the past year), played some Flower and GT5, but lost interest quickly and returned to Pushmo. I'm afraid I might have outgrown the big-screen gaming. The big-screen living room TV is where the kids watch their cartoons and wife watches the newscasts and movies, my renewed claim to it seems just.. out of place. So if WiiU cannot get me back into 'proper' console gaming, nothing will : )

by this time next year <3 my WiiU aka (new name here)

so wen the Wii U comes out, does that mean next gen has started?

Sure. Even Wii is a part of this gen...

Personally I hope Wii U is a decent bit more powerful than PS360 to A) get our first glimpse of better than PS360 graphics and B) force MS and Sony to hurry PS4/XB720 along.

How big do you guys reckon the OS will be? With the illusion of two screens being powered separately in some cases e.g. TV screen and tablet showing different things at the same time (it can do that right?), I think wii u may need to do a lot of multi-tasking. For what the 3ds OS offers, I think that the 32mb reserved for it was a bit excessive and could have been better used for games.

Take this with a grain of salt...
Sopposed logo concepts for Smash bros Wii U.
Source is a japanese image board. Possibly fake...

I'd say more like a bucket of salt. The Japanese in the last image is almost unreadable and looks like a child drew it on a DS Screen. That being said, the Japanese on the top two images is perfect, or what I can make out is (i.e. not google translated) but that would be expected if it came from a Japanese source.

It lists the likes of :
Girahim
Layton
Sonic
Shelk (? Female from FF12)
Ridley
Saki (?) from Sin & Punishment
Slimes from DQ
Krystal
Palutena
Little Mac
King Hippo
King K. Rool
and a few others I can't quite make out.

So, yeah.

Although, it struck me that the Japanese word for Universe is 宇宙[uchu] as seen in the image. It also starts with a U (although it's pronounced differently) ... would make some sense to have it be named such...

Rendering two separate views is the same as running a split screen game. No need for special multitasking to do it.

For some reason I'm having trouble quoting atm.

@FyreWulff: "Rendering two separate views is the same as running a split screen game. No need for special multitasking to do it"

Sorry, what I meant to say is could you have netflix playing on the TV and browse the internet on the tablet at the same time. Since the tablet is running on the wii u's processing, doing both those things at once is essentially multi-tasking no? My point is can the wii u even do things like that?

Oh, something like that would need some sort of multitasking, yes. The Wii U would certaintly be capable of doing it (in theory), but I think in this case Netflix would assume control of both the TV and controller screens. Especially since console apps like that are optimized for using the machine's known power resources, and don't have to worry about sharing CPU time with other apps.

Yeah, I could see being able to assign one screen to a browser based video site, and the other screen to another website.

Letting you run seperate channels on different screens probably isn't going to happen though.

That was funny - just be careful, not everyone will know you're joking, though.

Really. If they can't even match, let alone surpass, a 2006 CPU in 2012, Nintendo may as well call the Wii U a disastrous failure before it even launches. That would be downright pathetic, no matter how cutting edge the Cell was then. I pray that was sarcasm.

why are we making fun of Cell?
It seems over all the 360 did beat the PS3 this gen right? Cell played no role in helping them.

The 360 has a GPU advantage, but the Cell can perform some work normally done by the GPU. It is not simple to get your games to take advantage of this, but it is not impossible either. This is why Uncharted looks so great, but early multiplatform games tended to be quite poor on PS3. If the PS3 did not have Cell, the 360 would be the "clear winner" in graphical terms.

The Cell has a lot of crazy functions that aren't really necessary. It can't really be compared to a traditional CPU. It's entirely possible that Cell will beat the Wii U's CPU in some ways, including raw GFLOPs. (In fact, since Wii U probably only has a tri-core, it'll almost certainly lose in that area.) (Also, I only mentioned GFLOPs because people like numbers.)

Was programming for Cell the reason for they Skyrim thing recently or was that something else?

I thought IBM's WiiU chip was decent? Something about Watson chip I forget..

In one of the videos from E3, they showed someone taking a picture of a parrot with the tablet and then sending it to the screen. I'm not sure if it's the same program using, but they do show video teleconferencing, so I'd think you could do that and perhaps send an e-mail at the same time.

Nothing to do with the CPU.

Bethesda has a badly designed, unoptimized save system that creates an ever increasing save file. Given the two different RAM pools on the PS3 you'd expect they would have changed it, maybe even taking advantage of PS3's standard HDD, but they didn't. In other words, for whatever reason they released a broken product willingly and it appears they have no intention of fixing it.

Meanwhile they make tons of money.

Merry Christmas people !!!

I got a yes or no question for you. You confirmed Nintendo gave a range on memory. Did they also give a range on the ALU count?

No.

GPU will be faster than PS3's. Will have more RAM. The CPU won't match PS3 in terms GFLOPS but will most likely be OoO though.

Fixed for more accuracy.

Please explain the significance of this for the less tech savvy readers of this thread.

me

USB 2.0 theoretical bandwidth is very small compared to USB 3.0 (and eSATA). Since Nintendo is allowing the usage of external HDDs, the idea is to avoid bottle-necking the HDD as little as possible.

It's bgassassin's funny and roundabout way of saying wiiU will have esata. For sure.

Hush you spoony bard.

3DS Fire Emblem to give us an idea of how paid DLC will work on Wii U.

http://andriasang.com/comzi0/3ds_paid_dlc_fire_emblem/

Nikkei reports today that Nintendo is targeting March 2012 for the start of paid download content sales for 3DS. The first game to see paid download content will be the 3DS entry in the Fire Emblem series.

According to the Nikkei report, players will be able to use either prepaid cards or credit card to make purchases. The 3DS firmware was already updated for billing functionality earlier this month.

Third party publishers are also making preparations for paid download content to begin rolling out starting summer 2012.

Nikkei also reports that Nintendo is planning on including similar paid download content functionality in the Wii U, which is due for release in 2012.
