Apple iPad 2 |OT|

Maybe this is a better place to ask. Why is it not possible to install Android or WebOS on an iPad? What's the technical explanation? I know about the Android port for the iPhone 3G, but that's it?
As I understand it, the simple technical explanation is that Apple doesn't allow users to install different operating systems on the iPad (well duh, what other reason were you expecting :P). You can pay $100 per year for the Apple developer program but that doesnt give the tools for install a different OS either. Hackers haven't been able to find any exploits that allow the iPad to boot a different OS, which would be the first step to porting over a different OS. Another roadblock would be drivers for different components of the hardware, information that Apple would almost certainly not make public to allow the hackers enable all those basic functions working on the new OS.

The flipside is that there hasn't been any tablet OS worth porting over. You asked about Android and WebOS but Honeycomb was only open-sourced last month and webOS is still on its way to becoming an open source project. Windows 8 is still in alpha. Only Ubuntu was available during the iPad launch.

If it were straighforward to install a different OS on the iPad there would be interest in doing so. The device was the one of its kind on the market for over a year. It's less likely now.

Is the LaunchPort really the only inductive charger for the iPad and even then only for the iPad 2? I'm looking to degrade my OG iPad to an XBMC remote, so it would stay in the living room and a flat pad on/under the coffee table to charge the iPad would be perfect. It would be more elegant than having a dock or a loose cable.

Seeing how the TouchPad already supports inductive charging, I hope we'll get this with the iPad 4.

I've been using the Google Search app to browse neogaf. Unfortunately, I find the font size on the text to be too small. Is there any way to increase the font size? Pinch-to-zoom doesn't really work since it doesn't readjust the width of the browser.

I have the logitech keyboard case and it's pricey but quality. I've been using it daily for months and have no complaints.

I think a keyboard built into the case might be a good idea for him. He isn't necessarily the most tech savvy person so something that would always be attached would be nice. What would be a good option for an external keyboard that works via Bluetooth just to give him some options.

I appreciate the help!

Well now I have over $80 in iTunes girftcards, and I have no idea what to buy. I'm not a big gamer on my iPad. I already jumped on NBA Jam and Dead Space during the sale, snagged Infinity Blade 1 during its last sale....haven't played either of the EA games yet, and I've put maybe 15 min into IB so far. :(

I'm thinking about buying some Marvel collections. Do I need to sign up at Marvel first? Will my iTunes money work with the app?

I'm just out of ideas of what to spend this money on.

That's what I said. Did you stop reading after the first sentence?

Um, no? I re-read your post and it still reads like you're suggesting to sell your iPad after a year for the next version. Again, that's extremely wasteful IMO

I'm probably going to wait for an ipad 3 but that £500 32GB Wifi + 3G sure is tempting.
Scratch what I said earlier then, get it and then sell if when they announce the date of the next Apple event (since iPad 3 will 100% be shown there), and you'll make more than you spent.

That is, if you you can be bothered by that, i'd say it's worth it. Biggest regret is not selling my iPad 1 when I knew the iPad 2 was coming, could have easily gained if I did it. Family was against it though. :(

Are there any good calendar apps? Or is the included one on the iPad good on its own?

IF you are looking to keep dates and plan ahead, then Agenda Calender (99c) is nice, as it keeps things simple.

A random calendar app, that is just a calendar, not a planner, is Uniqlo Calendar (Free). It is just a crazy, quirky thing.

At this point I'd probably wait, but you can probably pick up a refurb for $450 right now and resell it for $400 when the new one comes out.

$400 is optimistic. Iirc Apple placed the iPad1 on clearout sale for $375 when the iPad2 was released. You can risk selling your iPad when the WSJ leaks the event date, or the minute after Apple sends out the invites, but the safest bet is to wait.

I sold my original iPad with a case for $400 when the iPad 2 came out. Granted, it was in mint condition, but Apple resell value is always high.

Well yeah I can see why you got $400 for that bundle... I'm assuming you had the original box too (do Apple refurbs still come in a generic box)?

Apple products do tend to keep their value but a price cut will affect resale prices. We dont know what Apple will do with the iPad 2 *shrug*. Tablets arent 'essential' devices like a phone or a computer, I dont see any reason to get one now unless money isnt really a constraint or you need it for some reason.

Guys,

What brand of screen protectors do you use? Also, I want to buy a nice slim leather cover, is this one good: http://www.shop.kevikev.com/Yoobao-...art-Case-for-Apple-iPad-2-YBEXLIPAD2VER3.htm?

The Zagg invisishield one works great on our iPad 2. And they have a lifetime replacement policy. Our screen guard has a small scratch on it, and we're getting a free replacement soon.

As for a slim leather case, I highly recommend the Targus 360 case. We have it. Works great. Not bulky. And as the name implies, it's easy to rotate it 360deg for various app uses.

This post seems quite funny considering the one above, but...

My mum threw some shirts onto my bed and the coat hanger smashed the screen. Does anyone know roughly how much Apple is gonna charge to fix it? (in £s)

I dropped my ipad 2 on my garage floor which totally shattered the screen.

Walked into Apple and they gave me a new one, for free, on the spot. They said everyone is entitled to one free replacement. I was totally blown away. I didn't have a receipt or anything.

Well, thats what the smart cover is for. I was talking about shitty plastic screen protectors.

Using/buying a screen protector should depend on who will be using the iPad.

Our iPad is used, almost daily, by our 3yr old daughter. And during our Christmas vacation in NY, all of the in-laws used it, too. The iPad was practically in constant use all day & night.

But if it was just me using the iPad, then I doubt I would've bought a screen protector. Just a quality case, and that's it.

I've handed my iPad to my 3 yr old nephew many, many times. He's played for hours on it. The result is a nice glass screen with no scratches. If I'd put a screen protector on there, it would look like it had been through a war zone. The glass it's built with is tougher than any screen protector.

But I'm talking about daily use from a 3yr old. It only takes one mistake to get a scratch. Heck, I've seen display units with scratches on them. And the screen protector is easy to clean.

I know, and I always have the cover on, but I was using it at the time and she kinda threw the clothes in my direction for giving her a bit of cheek, lol!

Phoned Apple and they said the flat fee over the phone was £296.44, and that if I take it to a store there's a possibility of getting it reduced. So I'll have to go to another city to get to an Apple store, and hopefully get a free replacement. If not, my mums paying for the repair.

That does suck. She better pay for it! Lol.

@LosDaddie, we'll have to agree to disagree. I still wouldn't buy a screen protector.

That sucks. But it's your mom, and it sounds like you're still living at her place. I think you should only have her pay half of the repair costs. MIstakes happen.

But yeah, you should totally try to get a free replacement. I can't believe RSTEIN got one.

this is complete bs(not that your lying, that its inconsistent), I dropped mine and had a crack on it, walked into the apple store and was told damaged screens arent covered. Was $300 to get a new one.

Have you ever had an apple product replaced/repaired before? He looked up my Apple user ID and said everyone gets one free replacement/repair. He gave me a brand new ipad 2 right on the spot. Next time he said it will cost me.

She's gonna claim it as accidental damage on the home insurance, so it'll just be the excess to pay, which isn't as bad. I'll probably go halvers with her.

Accept nothing less than Power Support, crystal or anti-glare variety. Crystal basically looks invisible.

I think it's a good idea to put one on if kids and guests are going to be hacking away at Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja, etc. The peace of mind alone is worth it.

I'm sure this question has been asked and answered a few times, but this thread is decently-sized. I hope nobody minds if I ask again.

I'll be in the market for an iPad in a few months. Now the rumors say that the iPad 3 will be announced or launching anywhere between March and late Summer, or even later. Is it worth waiting for?

How much better could it really be? I know, it's all up in the air right now.. but anyone have any advice?

Cheers!

No one knows. No one will know until Apple announces it.

You know, the iPad 3 is coming this year. The question is when and I'm guessing its sooner rather than later.

iPad 1 released in April and iPad 2 in March. Assuming that Apple sticks to the same schedule, you don't have that much longer to wait for the new one. Rumors are it will have a retina display and that's certainly worth holding out for IMO.

Well, we do know for certain that it includes a flux capacator, so time travel is a distinct possibility. The case design is a lot more bulky this time to accomodate the fleshlight they've installed, and it'll make a mean coffee if you pour the beans into the multi-use organic jack as well.

Just buy a 2 and sell it later if the iPad 3 is really amazing. Or wait for it. Only you know how much you want/need a tablet. If you're in the market in 'a few months' then buy the iPad 3.
